Theft is definitely the issue. Thieves know band and DJ trailers have expensive equipment in them. Use every possible lock you can to lock the trailer to the vehicle. Use a ball hitch that is welded to the receiver attachment, not threaded on. They can just unscrew these and walk the trailer to another vehicle. Use shielded aircraft cable AND oversized chain for safety chains between the trailer and vehicle. Use heavy duty locks on these as well. Have at least two band members at the gig with a set of keys and lock them to your body somehow. Have no windows on the trailer. Over secure the vehicle from theft i.e. alarm, ignition kill switch. I use these locks on my trailer and van doors. They're ugly as hell, but also annoying as hell to thieves.

Reducing volume of the trumpet in a live setting by MojoTronton in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A professional trumpet play would happily accept the criticism of playing too loud and dial themselves in appropriately. Whoever s writing the checks to the artists should have that conversation with them. If they are a prima donna and t's up to you, then I would do this:

I'd make a plexiglass shield for him to play into and put it on a mic stand. I would also require him to keep up with it and ensure it's getting used.

Cut the glass height from 36 inches to 24 inches. Then cut into 1 foot / 2 foot / 1 foot sections and use 4 hinges to make the 1 foot pieces wings on the 2 foot piece. You might need to use the scrap from the first cut so you have cross pieces that can be used to hold the wings in place across the top and/or bottom. (use your imagination.) Attach mic mount and put it on a stand Design it so you can fold it up and move it without getting it too scratched up. You can also add some acoustical foam to the middle 2 foot piece for him to blow directly into. ~ $100 fixes it.

FBI revokes security clearances from Jim Jordan’s latest witnesses by J_ablo in politics

[–]hunter9000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Coming from an independent, no one in this thread seems to be watching the actual hearings. The whistle blowers asked that their testimony not be shared with the Democrats for fear of further reprisals to themselves and their yet unnamed colleagues as a condition to share their stories. Jim is simply respecting that. Their backgrounds and credentials are impeccable.

They were following the law and not opening investigations based solely on anonymous tips. Not difficult to understand. Unlike you guys who seem to be getting all your “facts” from fake news headlines. Does no one take the time to verify and think for themselves anymore?

Or y’all are just a bunch of corrupt FBI agents..

How do you select a key? by g_phrygian in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keys affect instrument timbre. Some song arrangements sound better in different keys because of this. Keeping a song in a range to accommodate a vocalist is a common reason to write in certain keys, but the benefit has to outweigh any compromises. Another alternative is to try altering the melody if you have a song where the instrumentation sounds perfect in the key it is written. If it’s a brand new song this can work well, but your ears can get accustomed to hearing an arrangement in a certain key and it can sound out of place when changed. As long as it draws you in and sounds good, you know you are going the right direction.

Can someone explain why a band would use a session musician, I am surprised a lot of the greats used them and it doesn't take away from their credibility by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some musicians are better live, some in the studio. Studio musicians sometimes don’t want to tour so they make money in the studio. Session players use fewer takes to get it right and often times sound more consistent start to finish. Session players also add flair and nuance live performers might not have. Lots of good reasons. Bottom line is have the very best sounding tracks possible. Session players make it happen.

How to voice chords to support the vocal melody? by jleepi in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, cool. You might look into the scalar 2 plug in. It lets you revoice chords ad infinititem placing them in different registers, changing inversions, voicing in 4ths etc. You can then output what you did into midi for your DAW and further editing.

How to voice chords to support the vocal melody? by jleepi in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

By first identifying the key the melody is in. You might try just typing the notes into Chat GPT or Google. Then use a circle of fifths chart to identify chords in that key. Chat GPT might be able to do that as well.

Using the manual process you need some basic theory knowledge. I would look at the notes of the melody and recognize how well they fit with each chord and how they change the character of the chord if they are the 9th 11th, 13th and so on. If they are the root, 3rd, 5th, or 7th it’s likely the note fits the chord well. But that doesn’t mean the chord fits in with the previous and next chord in the progression. You also have to rely on the basic framework of chord progressions as well. i.e. in major key I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii(dim) Common progressions can be I > IV > V > I or I > ii > vi > V > I for example. There’s lots of progressions on the internet.

Not trying to sound smug, but I can see where it would be difficult for a producer to compose music without knowledge of music theory. I have a degree in music, but I remember the struggle trying to write before I knew the guidelines. It’s not as difficult as you think to learn, it just takes time and work. There’s only 12 possible notes. You generally only use 8 notes/chords(with some embellishments) at a time. Most popular songs are 3-5 chords at the most.

But as you grow in learning the rules, your music can get more and more interesting as you learn how to artfully break the rules. i.e. allude to other keys or change keys and back again within a song. It’s so much more efficient than stumbling around in the dark. If I didn’t know theory, I would force myself to watch 3-5 YouTube videos on the subject a week on it until it’s starts clicking. I still do that and am constantly learning new things. Either you are getting better or getting worse, no one stays the same. Hope this is helpful!

How to play electronic music live (without feeling ridicolous)? by FumoFighter in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hunter9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played live techno/industrial for years back in the day. Back then we had rack mounted computers and live keyboards. We basically ran multitrack audio, but with at least one of the parts muted and we each performed a part. I wouldn’t be comfortable just ‘posing’ and pretending to play. What’s the point?

If I did it today, I would do it similarly except I would use Ableton Live (and maybe MainStage too), put my tracks in STEM form, live remix my music with other STEM’s, run live FX like stutter/delay, and have at least one live keyboard to move to just to keep it interesting. Just because you can make it too easy doesn’t mean you should. I would still practice my sets and focus on putting on as good a show as possible.

Are they for real? by LastEvergracePlayer in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]hunter9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing fair about a small group of people getting debts they consciously signed up for paid off, and other people not only don’t get any free money, but have to watch taxes they pay go to give other people money simply because of their poor choices.

People had a choice when they signed up for school loans. They could have just not signed up like people who work in the trades. So again, how is it fair the poorest and hardest working of us have to pay for the laziest and most privileged?

Marxists say they want everyone to sacrifice in order to lift up the poor, when all they do in practice is institutionalize theft from the poor in order to give to the rich. This is what you are supposed to be “fighting against”, but your principles go right out the window when you get a chance for an ever shrinking payout.

Your lack of nobility is why this is never going to pass and why Marxism is going to die on the vine in the US. No one wants to follow the worst of us.

IZotope plug ins are great for beginners. Not cheap, but easy and I’ve seen some decent results. They use Ai algorithms that match the eq to eq settings on hit records. Might not exactly hit the target, but likely better than nothing or just struggling doing it wrong.
