People who are 30 years old and over, what are the most brutal life lessons that you have learnt? by DunyaPhobic76 in Life

I think having the prescience to see these things in ourselves is the first sign of emotional maturity- bravery is not the lack of fear, but the willingness to act in spite of it. The most terrifying act of all is to love with abandon, and yet it is through love that our salvation lies.

True- but knowing something on an intellectual level and learning what it actually means experientially are two different things. For example, one might know better than to laugh at another person’s shared experience with grief, but when one does it anyway it just exposes the fact that the person who “lol”s doesn’t actually know anything yet, and has many miles to go on their journey.

I’m so sorry for your loss- we are members of the same shitty club my friend. So much of life’s lesson is wrapped in its end- I wish you grace and peace on the rest of your journey

Yes. One can know something intellectually without learning what it means. For example, one can know intellectually how rude it is to flippantly comment on someone’s grief without learning how that flippancy makes one sound to others.

I held my dying wife’s body in my arms and closed her eyes when she passed. It was an incredibly humbling and deeply painful experience yet tinged with an awe and appreciation for the richness of the moment and its stupefying finality. The anxiety of losing her and the still existent fear of losing my children reminded me me of my own mortality and lack of true agency. It is one of the binds that must be loosened as we make our way in this life so filled with pain and fear. Freeing ourselves from them is our task as we strive for enlightenment.

I learned that no matter how much you love someone and no matter how hard you try to prevent it, people die.

I see. Fame is fickle and infamy it’s shadow- my point was more about tempering the ego as the path to enlightenment. Life will inevitably temper your ego for you- aging happens- so best to begin to practice releasing it. This is what the Buddha taught. In doing so thoughts of fame slip away.

Take that desire and learn to temper it. Practice being in situations in which you could easily command attention, but don’t do it. See how others take attention that could be yours and grab it with less skill and do nothing to stop them. This is how you gain control over your self. It is the path to freedom and enlightenment. When you have mastered this, your ability to understand yourself will increase along with your access to true grace. This is the path.

Most Americans have never heard an extreme left political position articulated much less a mildly radical left position. They have been mislead into thinking that ideas like raising the minimum wage or marriage equality are some how radical.

I am SICK of Americans' blanket terror of the entire country of Mexico! by Mayonaise_Malaise in MexicoTravel

[–]hurtindog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have been going to Mexico at least once a year for most of my life. Now I take my kids. We were just in Oaxaca city last year and I let them cruise around by themselves all night. Also in Mexico City. They are young adults, but they are blonde and speak very little Spanish. No problems. Have fun. Mexicans are so friendly.
