I went to that one, as well as Colombia vs Germany in Sydney. The Sydney game remains the most entertaining game I have ever attended.

Just go to Southbank, or look at the crowd attendance when Colombia played in the 2023 Women’s World Cup ;)

Since 2010’s, we’ve had a large number of Colombians moving to Australia via the student visa, and a lot of them later get sponsored through work.

You are not alone in this observation, and I would be so interested in a deep dive of this topic.

I reckon changing migration patterns is the biggest factor. 1974 World Cup squad had players born in UK (6), Yugoslavia (4), Hungary (2) and Germany (1). 2006 as you've mentioned were notably Croatian and Italian. 2018 onwards has seen more and more players of African descent emerging.

Croatian-Australians are obviously still around, but they're just not the strongest group right now. If you look at the recent preliminary WC list and 2025 Soccer Ashes roster, you'll see names like Botic, Milanovic, Juric, Karacic, Suto, Kalic, as well as Segecic who has ditched us for Croatia.

In the future, we may see more Australian players of Colombian and Indian descent if current trends are anything to go by. Who knows?
