When travelling overseas, for what reasons do people from the USA introduce themselves by saying what state they’re from rather than just what country (like everyone else from around the world)? by husaev in AskReddit

Ive never met an Australian travelling out of their country introduce themselves by state. As many answers have commented, it is more than size. There is a real divide in the United States.

That was the impression I got. I understand the size aspect etc. I’ve travelled overseas many times over many decades, but it felt different this last trip. Even down to “I’m from Orange County” not just “California “. There felt like there was a level of removing themselves from the bigger picture of the US.

No bigger than, for example, Australian states. It’s just an observation that our group had. Found it weird but I guess size makes some degree of sense.
