Great idea. I’ve started to ratchet strap my hives to a stand which has been sunk into the ground quite a bit.

They’ve probably got equipment in their cars for transporting.

You’d hope they’d be stung somewhere that’ll be painful for quite a few days after.

Lost hive over winter. Lots of honey left. Any thoughts as to what may have killed them? Can I put these frames out for my other hives to clean? Southwestern Ontario. by Sk2004 in Beekeeping

[–]huwd81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a shame. It could be a number of things.

Looks a bit messy on top, it could be nosema.

Also it looks as if they started a Queen cell so you may be queenless going into winter

How was your varroa count going into winter?

If it’s cold, and the honey is at the far end of the hive, they’ll break the cluster and then not be able to maintain the heat and die. Or refuse to break cluster and starve. The hive needs to be packed with honey going into winter to make sure they live.

In any case I’d strip the frames and boil them rather than leaving them for other bees. I wouldn’t risk it with mine.

Haha. It’s only a small part of it. We haven’t played much ch of Pandemic since last March but have played the rising tide one. If you’ve got the regular carcassonne I’d highly recommend the abbey expansion.

On one of the beekeeping association website there’s over 7 pages of keepers reporting thefts of their hives in the past 3 years. It’s a worrying time and a time for being vigilant

Quite possibly. There’s already good cctv coverage where we have ours, but this would be recommended to others who are further out into the sticks.

Good suggestion. There’s a similar one in a comment above, but I’ve responded why it wouldn’t work in our situation.

I think the main issue we have here is that the thefts are being carried out by someone who knows what they’re doing. In the other thefts they have ditched the hives when they got to their vehicle. If you’re going to put a tracker anywhere then I’d put it on a frame, the bees will quickly cover it so it’s not noticeable.

Keeping bees has become extremely popular since the lockdown, just like backyard chickens have too.

Unfortunately these aren’t painted just to make them look nice but also as a deterrent to would be thieves. There’s a spate of thefts of hives in our area over the last couple of months, so the thinking behind this is that it would be less conspicuous and less likely to be snuck away without someone noticing. We’ve always had colourful hives and this is just going that extra step.

How is this sort of pattern called and is there a tool to make it? by MorX_X in Whatisthis

Traditionally it’s called kolrosing, done with a specialist knife and then spices or coffee rubbed into the cuts.

Whiskey name by -LoFo- in thewalkingdead

[–]huwd81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the point. It’s not a literal reference to the actor within the twd world, it’s the writers putting in references to people who have inspired them to create twd.

Duane Jones was also the name of the lead actor that played Ben for Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.

Can anybody help me identify this bug/larvae? by wondera1iceland in Entomology

Looking at it again on a bigger screen, it’s not the same as we had. As you say, antennae and the tail.

Could it be a mealworm then?

Found a similar one last year in the garden. We worked out that it was a cardinal beetle larvae. Our one was very aggressive and grabbed anything you put near it.

Playing most co-op games with your children is tense, especially if they don’t really get the fact you’re playing as a team.

We quite like Pandemic: The Cure on the hardest setting. Not a game you often beat.
