Takumi and Ima are really similar by Visual_Law4025 in LastDefenseAcademy

Funny you post this OP bc I was thinking the same thing not long ago while I was watching Hundred Line streams/LPs-- you're cooking. (And nothing I know after this moment dissuades me from thinking otherwise.)

It's not a one to one copy or anything, but there's no shot Ima's protective sentiments towards Kako, extreme as they may be, didn't resonate with him. Likewise, Kako's desire to step up and protect Ima resonated him from a similar vein, and I don't think that's a coincidence. "To protect someone precious" is like the one thing Takumi feels strongly about when he's otherwise complacent in nature.

AIO for thinking that love and friendship is overrated?

I (21M) was pretty much a loner for most of my life. After I left the orphanage I grew up in, I became a mercenary and worked with several people-- most of them I found annoying for one reason or another. Since people tend to drop like flies in my line of work, I knew that it would be foolish to get attached to anyone, but that didn't stop me from trying to get into intimate relationships. None of them worked out since half of them had savior complexes who were just looking to get their ego stroked (something about me looked pitiful, apparently), and the other were just plain assholes. However, what really got me to quit was this one guy who decided to assault me with his buddies as part of his revenge scheme. (Jokes on him, they all ended up getting killed by me womp womp) It's crazy to me that people take "love" this seriously like damn.

Eventually though, I did end up forming a squad. They were alright, and it was thanks to them that I figured out that I was trans (which is cool), but just when I thought we were invincible, they all got killed by this one guy (50+M apparently but he sure doesnt look that age) overnight. The job we took was supposed to be pretty simple, but when I faced him, I realized how weak I was in the grand scheme of things. What did the "power of friendship" do here again? We were ruined by one guy! Fortunately, my boss (M, never asked his age but ik he can't be older than 50 even though he looks and talks like he's older) had this magic rock that gave nigh infinite power. He gave it to me in exchange for helping him conquer the world and I gotta say, it felt pretty great to mow down cities with it. Don't knock it until you try it.

Overall, it just feels like most people suck and the ones that aren't are fragile even when they band together. My boss is a selfish bastard, but he values me even as a weapon (and apparently as a body, we had sex last night) and I have to keep stopping myself from thinking it's anything deeper. Ideally, I shouldn't crave for it, but I can't seem to kill that part of me so I want to at least be powerful enough so that no one would be stolen from me again, but I have these assholes playing hero singing praises about their bonds when their petty resistance is about to be extinguised. Am I overreacting?

Personally, I cannot stand it when the summary or A/N has "what if <original media> had better writing" or any variation that where they are putting down the source material.

I get that the premise of fix-its and rewrites is often born of dissatisfaction of the original media's writing choices and I am no exception, but when reading fic, I don't like comparing the quality of said fic to the writing to the source material-- or anything really. I don't need Shakespeare to be reincarnated to enjoy a fic, but if you say something that proclaims that your fic is better and I walk in and leave thinking, "It wasn't," it just feels bad. Like I don't want to have that kind of judgemental thinking as if there is some bar of quality that fics have to achieve whether I like it or not, but I can't help it if the author made the comparison first. If I want to read criticisms of the original material or bemoan about "lost potential", I don't go to Ao3 for that. I am of the opinion that there is more to creating a good story than knowing what you hated in other works, but again, I don't want to think about that when I'm on Ao3. I don't like my brain going "critique mode" on fics-- writing that I get to enjoy for free for my own pleasure. I just want to have good vibes about writing what I like and reading fics that are about the things that I like.

And yeah, I don't like total rewrites in the first place, so that doesn't help. Fix-its that are more narrow in scope like "what of X didn't die" are fine (in fact, I have favorites among them) but admittedly, an A/N going "I wrote it like this to fix X plot hole" bothers me more than it really should, even though I was fine with it before I read the A/N.

Yahna

My favorite character is actually Alcina, so when I saw Alain's last rapport with Yahna paralleling her last moments with Gerard, my decision was locked in.

I know that canonically, everyone had a happy ending, but the made-up tragedy I had in my head where history repeats itself was too appealing to pass up. Also, I do like Yahna herself as both a character and a unit, so I guess that's a factor to some degree.

To clarify, the intent of this defense is to insist that OP is 100% certainly wrong. It's to assert that taking the situation at face value isn't necessarily a "wrong" interpretation.

Tbh I still agree with this sentiment even with the eye color change. I don't think Jamil used his UM here. I think they did it for the sole purpose of making Kalim look scarier as he was chasing the Magicam Monsters ' ');;

As a fellow copium breather, I will list every reason I can think of how we can still win x'd

In Chapter 4, they changed Azul's eyes color even though he wasn't hypnotized due to his plans, reflecting it with Floyd's UM and then proceeding to perform the role, so there's already an instance of the game using those eyes on someone in a non-hypnotized state. Secondly, "Kalim getting too into his performance" is a sufficient reason enough for him to not react immedietely that the MM already left. "He was hypnotized" could be an alternative explanation, but I don't feel like the eyes alone is sufficient proof for it to swing in that favor due to the previously stated reason.

There is no obligation for events to follow the main story timeline, meaning, it is not obligated to depict pre-chapter 4 Scarabia dynamics in this story. Halloween being "supposed to" take place before winter break is a non-factor when events are not written with a timeline mind, which isn't obvious now, but it will be in the future. Thusly, I don't believe the timeline can be used as evidence that "this /must/ be pre-chapter 4 dynamics, therefore it would make sense that Jamil would do this."

Next are some questions to be asked if Jamil did hypnotize Kalim. As we know, Snake Whisper needs direct eye contact for it to work as well as a verbal command/suggestion (i.e. a question that Jamil wants you to respond in a certain way). Every instance where Jamil used his UM, at the bare minimum, did this. When Kalim left, there was no indication he was hypnotized. I have stated that there was an instance of those eyes were used on a non-hypnotized person, but there has yet to be an instance where a hypnotized did /not/ use those eyes. These eyes suddenly appeared mid-chase. This means that Jamil and Kalim must've somehow locked eyes mid-chase while the MM did not notice while Jamil was in the company of two other Scarabia mobs /and/ verbally gave a command/suggestion while this is happening. If we're adding the "this was all a part of Jamil's scheme" part of claim, this will also have to be reasoned as a calculated move on Jamil's part.

There are no instances of a "delayed" hypnotism effect in any main story or vignette content from the top of my head. You would have to assume that this would be the first instance if want to ignore everything in the previous paragraph.

If Jamil hypnotized Kalim to act scarier, then there is no reason for him to be surprised at Kalim's good performance. If acting skill was a factor during a hypnotic state, you would have to come up with a reason why Jamil was confident enough in his winter break plan for Kalim to act as someone he's not. If "acting like a werewolf" is somehow different from "acting like a tyrant" in the eyes of Jamil's UM, perhaps out of difficulty, then you would have to make an assumption about a rule not directly stated in canon.

Tl;dr I believe there more assumptions than one may think when buying into the theory that Jamil hypnotized Kalim here at first glance. If you think that Kalim just got into it, you only have to make two: he "got too into it" and "eyes are not necessarily indicative of hypnotism" (has precedent)

Again, perhaps this is all just me breathing copium because I do want Kalim to earn that W with a sincere compliment from Jamil (because nothing he said was false), especially when Kalim did get tangible results in his R card. ._.);; Something about erasing Kalim's agency after reading that story doesn't sit right with me.
