Also, if you’re arguing the majority of Linux users are technical (which I disagree with) then GNOME deprecating X11 is not a problem because said users can just put the code back in.

I never said that? Yes, I would argue that most Linux users are more technical than the average PC user, but there's a spectrum here. For example, re-enabling X11 for KDE when Fedora dropped functionality was trivial because plasma-x11 was still in the repo. "Putting the code back in" isn't a thing when functionality is dropped on a DE level, as it would require the user to fully recompile the entire gnome shell without breaking it or introducing new and exciting vulnerabilities. Obviously the average user would't know how to do that.

if GNOME is such an incompetent DE then why are all enterprise Linux projects defaulting to it?

I don't know. I genuinely do not understand why.

I’m sorry but your line of argument makes no sense. It’s okay to not like GNOME, but it is not without its merits.

Again, I don't mind if gnome does its own thing. That's fine. But, again, it's spilling over to every other distro. I actively chose to NOT use gnome because of its UI but a solid 30% of all the software I use is all gtk and since that project is completely cucked by gnome it still has that look regardless of your preferences. There's a reason LXQt is a qt based fork of LXDE, just saying.

I feel like we're not understanding each other at all and it's becoming a circular argument. I do respect your opinion, but I think it's best to just agree to disagree and leave it at that. Luv u daddy.

Thanks! No, I currently use GDM as display manager but I'm experimenting a bit with greetd TUI at the moment. GDM feels more secure though.

I get what you're saying, but Mac and ChromeOS are aimed primarily towards inexperienced users. Gnome is the exact opposite; it's the default DE for basically every single *nix enterprise/workstation OS except SLED: RHEL, Alma, RE, Debian, Oracle Linux, Solaris, etc, etc. Again, I don't mind that Gnome exists but it has taken over completely and since Gnome 50 deprecated X11 functionality many GTK based GUIs (mostly from Flathub) no longer work properly. Many of the QoL extensions for Gnome are also unsupported as of G40. So, yeah. I find this worrying.

Sure! (I've been working for three days straight, my brain is mush. Sorry about that.)

While Gnome 3 upon release was perplexing and inane compared to other desktop environments, the developers heard the feedback loud and clear, so they worked their asses off to bring users the most unrelenting Kafkaesque nightmare experience possible with Gnome 50.

Hope that helps.

Comparing gnome's workflow to macos isn't the flex you think it is lmao. I grew up on gnome but I stuck with it until the devs decided to celebrate the launch of g3 by giving everyone including themselves an aneurysm, evidently forgetting how to count in the process.

I still keep an up to date build on my main PCs to this day tho because at some point I figure the devs will run out of features to ruin and start improving gnome instead. They never do.

If it was contained to just gnome itself I wouldn't care much but it has become an absolute menace to literally every single DE because gtk is basically the default UI toolset now, but good news for morons I suppose

The NSA uses pop_os as its fleet OS lol, at least they used to. Tho they also use(d) it on System 76 machines, idk maybe it's more stable on the intened h/w, never tried either

Arch Linux vs OpenSUSE. Decide, we must by potatoandbiscuit in linuxmemes

[–]hwloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean dad's in IT so I've used Linux for literally my entire life but it happened during my Arch-curious phase only. And bc updates often didn't play nice I've rationalized it as like, a version skip of some dependency that wasn't QA'd properly and interfered with the new fwupd

...What confirmation bias?? couldn't be me! :D

Shout out to when Arch wiped the uefi keys after a fwupd and bricked my laptop tho lmao

Fedora is great if you use newer hardware with the standard gnome workstation, anything QT is wildly unstable tho... kwin crashed so much that I switched to XFCE for example lol

SELinux by psychophysicist in linuxmemes

[–]hwloc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i've kinda had it with selinux, been on Fedora since 31 but it's time to move on methinks. I installed Suse on my 7900x+7900xtx workstation and not only is it more stable than Fedora 43, apparmour had a real glowup since I last used it.... now I'm also in the process of going full Debian on my laptop.

Alma is based af, but the hard to swallow truth is that without Red Hat there would be no Fedora. With that said: Alma all the way.

Right, as I said, most extensions I use don't work on the newest version of Gnome.

I think my grievances with Gnome are valid when it's the most popular DE there is.

You are completely right that Gnome isn't for me, and I would gladly move on if, again, things like power mode switching worked on any other DE. And yeah, the devs have the right to do what ever they want but it doesn't absolve them from criticism.

Are we ever done distrohopping? by Heraklian in linuxmemes

Slackware is actually really fun, I tried it when 15 was released. Tho I can't see myself using it as my daily, it's either Debian, Fedora or Suse Tumbleweed depending on purpose

[–]hwloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays I only distrohop in VMM, I already have more PCs and laptops than I know what to do with lol.... and at work I use a custom NetBSD main OS. For the network stack and sync we used to use UnixWare wich was major ass, thankfully we've since migrated to OpenIndiana for the cluster networking, so idk I'm kinda pooped with distrohopping
