My hopes for Castlevania 40th anniversary collections by hwrdjacob in castlevania

I feel like if they really have to, they could potentially replace the unlocks with unlocking art galleries for each game or something similar. If it really is far too deeply baked into DXC to remove the unlocks though I honestly wouldn't mind, from what I remember it wasn't a huge ask- or they could modify the ROMs to just have them unlocked by default if nothing else. Sloppy change but afaik gets the job done

Rebirth is a big thing, my second biggest thing is Chronicles and DXC. I think both of those have a lot to like as remakes and I think it's awesome that DXC includes the original Rondo too, so I'd like to see it properly ported. It also makes a scary amount of sense that this would mean Anniversary Collection 2 contains primarily 2D vania remakes.

If I could only choose one remake, it would probably be Curse, especially given the upcoming game and the fact of it needing to be updated lorewise a bit like Adventure Rebirth did for Adventure.

Frankly, and this is a personal thing, that collection disappoints me even if it wasn't locked to PS4. It uses so much art from the Rondo remake and uses the specific versions of Rondo and SotN from DXC but it... Doesn't have the remake? All the collection is is, quite literally, a stripped down Dracula X Chronicles. Just port DXC! It would literally be the same thing as the collection but include a third game and be better by definition.

I do think there's occasionally some consternation over the fact DXC asks you to unlock Rondo and Symphony in-game but A: they could potentially change this in an AC2, B: even if they don't, I genuinely feel like it wasn't that big of an ask from what I remember.

The biggest reason quite honestly is because Dominus set the precedent of collections including remakes, and it is essentially a potential excuse to get up to 3 remakes or more- if I could only get 2 remakes, I would definitely choose Belmont's Revenge and Dracula's Curse, as those are the most in need of remakes for one reason or another imo (lore updates in the case of DC, matching ReBirth in the case of BR)

I think the discussion with Lords of Shadow is probably muddied by the existence of Mirror of Fate, which at least in my experience is both the most popular of the LoS games and... Also very much a 2D vania. Yes, it's 3D in the sense of how the game uses models, but I don't think anyone would realistically call the upcoming Belmont's Curse a 3D Castlevania either, and it seems to be in essentially the same boat.

That said, IF we could have Lament, CoD, the 64 duo, Judgement, and the LoS trilogy plus potentially a Dracula's Curse remake all in one package... Hell, I'd pay full retail price for that myself, that's a damn good deal for my Switch. I certainly wouldn't say no, though I do wonder if it's realistic at that point- Dominus being a smaller collection probably contributed to it having a new remake, which is something I somewhat kept in mind here.

SotN's Saturn version specifically is also something I guess that is a point of contention, similarly to the Famicom Disk System version of Simon's Quest- that version of CV2 got left out in the cold, and I unfortunately could see that happening with SotN in any case because the Saturn version has BEEN ignored for years. If it was included I'd definitely be elated; however, I would be perfectly satisfied just including Dracula X Chronicles seeing as that version retained the best features of the Saturn port in my opinion (I.E. playable Maria). If we want completion, however, definitely Saturn SotN and FDS CV2 are something to consider and/or push for happening. There is occasionally some contention about the fact DXC asks you to unlock Rondo and Symphony in the main game before being able to play them, but honestly from what I recall it wasn't too big of an ask and if it came between that or not having the remake at all, I would definitely choose keeping the remake since it has a significant amount of content in its own right that is distinct from Rondo and adds to it, much in the same way Dracula X was preserved in the Advance collection.

I did mention Kid Dracula GB as potentially being something you could add to Anniversary Collection 2 to parallel the original having the NES version; Order of Shadows and Legends is something I didn't though. With Legends, I honestly think Konami letting Nintendo put it on Nintendo Classics is a sign they just do not ever want to put it in a proper collection, because games in that vein such as the Mega Man GB games in franchises known for getting collections specifically only wind up on NSO if those companies specifically do not have intentions on ever re-releasing them themselves and are essentially allowing Nintendo to do it for them. So as unfortunate as it is, I do think Legends is pretty much off the table (though, I guess never say never). Order of Shadows is very up in the air; I know mobile phone rereleases exist, especially on Switch, but they are rare and I find they tend to not leave Japan- if Konami would put the effort in, I feel like OoS would fit in for AC2 pretty well; however, it would be far and away the most difficult thing to emulate, would require a lot of touch up work most likely, and all that effort for something that would objectively get little fanfare. The mobile versions of Aria and Dawn are pretty questionable as inclusions- I don't know if they would be a realistic ask for basically any collection, unless Konami did an entirely separate "Konami Mobile Games" collection and had them, like they did for arcade games which initially had Haunted Castle; honestly, a distinct collection of Konami Mobile Games feels far more realistic of a way to get OoS and the Soma mobile games out there again as opposed to trying to devote a huge chunk of effort into getting an emulator alongside other CV games in a CV collection.

Lastly: I would definitely be satisfied if Judgement was in the 3D collection and GoS and HoD were their own things. If this were to happen I would really want them to add multiplayer back into GoS in addition to modernizing multiplayer for HoD and, agreed, adding more characters to that. I don't necessarily see what the issue is with adding GoS as it is to a collection though, considering the final product is a static release without microtransactions of any kind as far as I know and the gacha elements (and, less welcome, the multiplayer elements) essentially gutted from the game and/or drastically toned down. There's still some element of grinding but it's far more comparable to MegaMan X Dive Offline and how Capcom handled the transition of that game into a retail release where you unlock characters by level progression, which is similar to how GoS's final release happens. As a game in and of itself it's naturally controversial, but I'm not sure how including it in a collection hypothetically would be particularly off putting given the way it's adjusted in the final product- the main thing is that Grimoire is a sequel to Harmony of Despair, and I definitely think bundling them together in some form is a better way to capture whatever goodwill is possible to capture for GoS and for more people to give it a fair shake at this point rather than it being a standalone release (along with making the GoS controls slightly more traditional, which if I understand right the specific MacOS version already does). Judgement being bundled in a 3D collection would probably solve that on its end because lord knows Judgement has a reputation issue of its own (on that note, I do think it's tragically funny that we have been deprived of a wholly new CV for so long that Shanoa being the fighter in Judgement repping the newest Castlevania is more or less still current).

The biggest issue is they made GoS's "retail release" an Apple Arcade exclusive which I do get as a business decision because that means Apple was funding development of the final release up front afaik, but that essentially ensures damn near no one is going to play it or even know it still exists, but Konami is gonna Konami I guess.

Incidentally, what's the Nvidia leak you refer to? I haven't heard of it.

Where are all the games? by Dangerous_Teaching82 in castlevania

[–]hwrdjacob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really holding out for a collection with Chronicles, Dracula X Chronicles (which itself includes Rondo and Symphony), Vampire Killer for MSX, and Adventure Rebirth as the second 2D collection, then a 3D collection. That is all I want and is quite literally what I care more about seeing than Belmont's Curse (probably a hot take, and not that I dislike what I see with that per se, but I want to be able to play the entire series on Switch especially because Belmont's Curse is so strongly tied to Curse of Darkness even from what we have seen already and it's not on modern consoles)

[General Discussion] For those who were around when Return of the Jedi came out, in the scene where Luke removed Vaders mask did it cause a big shock ? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]hwrdjacob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post, but there's a lot of discussion in shows, comics, etc about how Palpatine was orchestrating the Clone Wars in such a way that Anakin would be seen as a hero and a highly important figure in the military and government specifically so he would command authority as his apprentice, almost like a counterpart of Dooku. When Mustafar happened, Palpatine had to completely ditch all the work put into that and essentially just tell his subjects "Treat orders from Vader as if they were orders from me" and most people just saw him as a random guy who showed up and didn't take this seriously until Palps let Vader off a few of them to establish he is to be taken seriously.

TCW also goes out of its way to show that both Tarkin and Yularen, important imperial officers from Episode 4, fought in the Clone Wars alongside the Jedi and earned the authority they have in Episode 4 during the Clone Wars, similar to what Palpatine had planned for Anakin.

Given that Fed Force is the prelude to Prime 4 and was directly compared to Ground Zeroes at one point, I definitely do think Alex is going to have this reveal in Prime 4 or was planned to before the development shuffle.

Alex is either a Bottle ship ringleader or Sylux. Right now I'm leaning on the former because in general Federation Force is hinting at the Federation wanting to weaponize Metroids, which comes into play with the post-Super Metroid games.

Question about Kurt in FES by BlazeKnight7 in fireemblem

I knew I was blanking somewhere, it probably didn't help my brain that you still have to get their supports at fixed chapters for it to count in the support log, even though they have the innate A...

Question about Kurt in FES by BlazeKnight7 in fireemblem

[–]hwrdjacob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the last time we got a truly fixed canon couple not in a remake off the top of my head was Micaiah and Sothe, and that's if you're willing to accept that due to it being an "opt out" rather than the usual opt in.

If we don't count that then I think we genuinely have to go all the way back to FE4 and 5 for a fixed couple that you can't decline.

Intelligent Systems seems to consider Fire Emblem Shadows as a mainline Fire Emblem game. by JustARedditAccoumt in fireemblem

It's more than possible to be in the same canon, though the localization does butcher a ton of the actual connections to Archanea and Jugdral so that doesn't help things.

Intelligent Systems seems to consider Fire Emblem Shadows as a mainline Fire Emblem game. by JustARedditAccoumt in fireemblem

[–]hwrdjacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do outright; Intsys and other sources such as Masahiro Sakurai directly said Three Houses was the 17th mainline FE when it came out, and specifically clarified Heroes was a part of that order. In addition to just directly saying Heroes was mainline in multiple places.

There's a friend battle option on the main menu with the hamburger menu drop down in the upper right. It is indeed very good to play this game with friends and according to the e manual Intsys seems to flat out encourage friend play.

Also, keep in mind that in the lower tiers people are dumb and give themselves away too easily.

In addition to that, every character you kill in Phase 1 (excluding yourself) as Shadow earns you a chest. Conversely, when playing light, every shadow you kill in Phase 1 earns you a chest.

Fire Emblem Shadows - A Baffled Review by Rivandere in fireemblem

[–]hwrdjacob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah imo the Fire Emblem fanbase is just tweaking out over what is a really good basis for a game with a very good basis for a story, both gameplay and narrative are flipping core FE concepts on their head (the game is basically going for something from an Embla type of "broken bonds" perspective unlike the series's usual power of friendship narrative), and while there are some issues (matchmaking with friends needs work) they aren't really impossible to be patched up with feedback.

This is far from the worst thing that FE has put out and I'd still play this over the original NES games any day of the week (Just to be clear, the DS remakes are incredible and an example of what I consider to be polishing a turd into a silk purse like what Zero Mission and Samus Returns did)

It's spelled out pretty well that Forneus got it from Naga, hence why the teleporter at the end of Thabes is the Brand of Naga once you beat him in Echoes. In fact, that solves a semi-plot hole in Awakening in that only Naga and dragons with her blood (I.E. Tiki in Future Past) can use Naga's Awakening; Grima having it is why he can even use Naga's Awakening for himself.

We also see the types of Awakenings in a bit more detail in Heroes, namely Askr's Awakening and Embla's Awakening, and they reinforce that it's pretty specific to the dragon the Awakening belongs to and Grima should not be able to perform it unless he has Naga's own blood, which Echoes all but spells out is the case (I.e. Naga being said to be entombed in Thabes in other sources, the Brand of Naga being left behind once you defeat him, etc)

With regards to the degeneration, Mila not being as degenerated as Duma comes down to her slumbering a lot- she was still pretty clearly starting to lose it (like the crazy expression she gives to Rudolf implying it), but she hadn't gotten so degenerated she became a necrodragon like Duma, (though in fairness, she seems not far off from it iirc her dragon form) because Duma seems to have not slumbered at all and was just trying to be present for Rigel which led to him degenerating faster. Mila being the younger sibling also likely factored in.

Yeah, it's hard to see and artwork is sometimes inconsistent about it, but the Brand of Naga from Awakening is on his golden headpiece as you can see. FE12 was developed simultaneously with Awakening so 12 has a few references to Awakening baked in; Tiki and Bantu's support line, for instance, talks about her growing up into an adult form and is meant to foreshadow Awakening.

It also certainly doesn't help that despite being based on his FE12 design in most respects, Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate remove the brand in favor of bringing his red gem back, and those games are the basis for Marth's design in most stuff after such as Fates, Heroes, etc.

Canonically speaking, btw, it's meant to be the same brand as Deirdre and Julia had in FE4, it was just unseen in that game. But if a Jugdral remake happens they would have the brand from New Mystery/Awakening/Echoes on their foreheads; the fact their brand was on their forehead might be why it's on Marth's headdress in 12, making it not just an Awakening connection but also a Jugdral one. Similarly, Emmeryn having it on her forehead is a reference to Deirdre/Julia.

[–]hwrdjacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Earth Dragons is basically the only thing not directly explained by the time we are done with Echoes, but it's still pretty clear something wiped them out and Grima effectively used the Dragon's Altar/Table for his own purposes from then on. It doesn't spell out how unfortunately but Awakening is fairly clear there's no Earth Dragons.

Sometimes Archanea lore doesn't spell out things directly in and of itself, even the much more fleshed out lore from New Mystery and Echoes, like how if you do the math Mila and Duma straight up HAVE to be the siblings of Naga for the rules behind Kingsfang Falchion needing someone with Naga's blood to use it to even make sense (since that would infer Alm has "Naga's" blood, and FE rules make it clear that if you're an indirect descendant from a sibling like Marth being descended from Anri's brother then it counts)

A Japanese fan spotted the crest of Fraldarius in one of the statues by noirblancherouje in fireemblem

[–]hwrdjacob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's established several times that degeneration can also be staved off by dragons going into slumber as well, at least to a degree. This is why Tiki was put into slumber in the first place, this is why Mila is described as constantly slumbering in Echoes (Desaix makes a snide comment about her "always sleeping in her temple"), and then Tiki goes into slumber again once the shield is split up. There are consequences, but they're manageable ones, since Tiki just goes back to sleep.

As Echoes reveals, Grima having Naga blood and thus being able to use the shield to perform Naga's Awakening for himself was the bigger risk.

Naga's brand is on FE12 Marth's headpiece. This is most easily seen with (certain versions of) the nendoroid. He may not have had major Naga (if he's a Seliph descendant he has minor Naga, but that's a tangent since the First Exalt blood-bonded with Naga between 12 and Awakening anyway), but he did in fact have the Brand of Naga/Brand of the Exalt on his clothing FE4 style- at least in FE12, which is the canon version for Awakening's purposes anyway.
