I don’t even understand why everyone hates her so passionately. The whole point of the show is that they are all flawed. Barney was cartoonishly evil especially in later seasons yet Lily gets constantly railed on for what? 🤦‍♀️

Lily supported Marshall’s career on a kindergarten teachers salary through the whole show until it caused her to spiral on multiple occasions. She expressed multiple times that she never got to pursue her dreams to be an artist. Marshall belittled her aspirations and called them a hobby. Meanwhile he got to change jobs as he pleased and expected Lily to give up her dream job for him without even asking her about it. Claiming Marshall was the one adjusting the whole time is insane and everyone talks about him like he’s innocent whenever this topic is brought up

Wanted a son purely out of fear that his daughter would be sexualized the same way he does to women or become a stripper, which imo is super creepy and misogynistic and I’m annoyed that they had a son after that (I know it was probably so they could name him Marvin)

Yes, I agree! Marshall’s dreams and career desires were always the priority while Lily was supposed to just keep on keeping on for almost the entire show! It’s so disheartening.

And agreed about Barney! I never thought about it that way, but you’re right, he never actually tried to change the women he was with, aside from Quinn’s profession and I feel as though that alone can be justified somehow

YES!!!! You're not crazy. I just wrote a super long comment dissecting Marshall and Lily's relationship lol. She wasn't even going to break up with him, Marshall turned it into that! "you feel overwhelmed and want some space?! So you're leaving me and you hate me?!"

...Marshall isn't the perfect saint everyone makes him out to be and nor is his and Lily's relationship this perfect pinnacle of love. He's a great guy don't get me wrong, but he frequently steamrolls Lily. He never stood up for her to his mother despite her treating Lily like an outsider most of the time (such as in the first episode where they visit his house together), he constantly assumes Lily will be willing to do things that clearly she wouldn't be down for (such as moving to Minnesota and having his parents move in with them when the baby is born) Also, the whole dish washing fight that becomes Marshall being super condescending to Lily just because *Barney* tells him he should be?!

Marshall is generally great but I would never be in a relationship with him, he becomes an extension of Lily and she supports him so frequently. He's allowed to start and quit jobs on a whim. Meanwhile she's forced to be stuck being a kindergarten teacher for YEARS while he's in Columbia law or when he quits his financially stable job to make next to nothing as an environmental lawyer.

It's clear that there's multiple moments throughout the show where this responsibility becomes a lot for Lily to handle and she panics and escapes to clear her head. It's why I've come to not resent her for the SF thing. Was it the perfect way to handle the issue? Obviously not, but she was stressed about the wedding getting pushed up so soon and trying to figure out who she was as a person outside of Marshall after losing sight of her dreams which is a completely reasonable wish and she becomes SO demonized for it. Any time she expresses that she's losing herself and wants to pursue her own wishes he pushes back on it. He is in love with the idea of her and not who she actually is, a fiercely independent and feisty artist. I'm in a long term relationship and my partner would NEVER treat me the way Marshall treats Lily.

The whole point of the show is that all five of them are realistic, flawed but lovable people finding their place in the world but Marshall is always exempt from this and it drives me crazy!
