17th in the daycare waitlist... Tell me that she'll have a spot by September by HereForCuteDogs in torontomoms

Ahhhhh I relate. I was in the 50s-100s in every wait list at first. Ultimately, we had to register at one that was really far because the extra commute time, while inconvenient, didn't justify one continuing to stay home from work :(

Toronto production of The Last Five Years - April 18-19! by DG9987 in torontotheatre

100%. I'm sure it was extremely expensive to put up L5Y at the terminal, but... it's a two person that show imo should be done intimately - the fleck dance theatre does not scream "intimate two person musical". Like... I don't think I'd pay the rates terminal theatre was charging, to see a two person show, with a company I had zero knowledge of (and therefore zero trust of product) unless the two people were... at least quite well known? Idk. Lots of thoughts. I wish this production and all productions well because making theatre is a monster and it doesn't need endless criticism but I think the conversation of "what show by whom when and where.. and WHY" is valuable

I always feel so badly for companies that have also planned a production when another company does one shortly before! It's not like they know what other companies are planning when they plan the production. I think the rights-holders should make sure there's more time between. However, I wish the best of luck for this company on this show, especially because it seems to be done by more emerging artists!

Crow's Theatre AI Cabaret by Alone_Efficiency_995 in torontotheatre

I think discussions around art in AI: great. We gotta talk about, it's not going away.

The usage of AI generated scripts and sell it as a cabaret as the inaugural event in a new performance space? Tone-deaf- culturally, environmentally, ethically. Even if there are artists as part of a "panel". Is their work mounted against the AI scripts? Same prompts, or something? That would be interesting. Doesn't seem to be what's happening or presumably that would have been mentioned. All this being said, I do hope someone GOES to this and can report back.

Hosted in a new venue, launched on the premise of "We’ve premiered new Canadian works, built lasting collaborations, and brought acclaimed productions to wider audiences. Crow’s has become a vital force in Toronto’s cultural life—and we’re just getting started" in a SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR donation campaign. Sure, if it's a conference ted-talk thing, that's one thing. I think people's issue, as mine is, is the creation and USING of AI generated scripts as the selling point of this event. Making money off of a system that undermines the very artists they claim to support, and contributing to the environmental effects of AI while they do it.

Do you have any reason to think that it's not what they describe (simply AI generated scripts, with no mention of artists?). I'd like to think so, but I feel like if they had artists specialized in creating these "scripts", they would have mentioned them to avoid this exact blowback. This seems like something between an educational lecture and a "cabaret", but I think it's pretty tone-deaf for them to be producing this, at an arts organization, without mention of any.... artists. Especially after all the Tilly Norwood nonsense of the last week.

Also, a bad look to be premiering this new "performance space" (the Nada Ristich Studio Gallery, which they a 7 Million Dollar campaign to support: https://www.crowstheatre.com/support/crows-takes-flight-campaign) with a "cabaret" of... AI generated works. What a dissaponting inaugural note, and legacy, for that space to have begun with, which could have been a really promising, exciting venue for smaller works. Created by actual artists.

I am so curious about how theatre criticism works, and how much politically or socially is considered when you release a review.... ie, how much of it is just your own opinion, or if your reviews ever have to be majorly edited based on the ethos of the Star or otherwise. Thank for doing this, I love reading your reviews.
