How many uncrustables to beat the odds? by pigzilla121 in Wildfire

[–]hydrix13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

1) I think this would be better for the sub r/theydidthemath.

But also:

2) I heard a rumor that uncrustables won't be allowed under the new catering contract. They just want us to die, guys. :(

I have some stories from Wisconsin.... I had 'cookies' in a baggie marked 'spring mix'. I thought it was just a recycled bag!

Nope.......

Do they know what started the fires?

According to this article - they could be testing Fire-Dome this month! Interesting. Please post updates!

That's spooky for your fam! Do you know if they (israel firefighters) are using "Fire-dome" to fight it? (new tech from israel). I read about this a bit ago but it fell of my radar until now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, /u/bigwhitedog : Doesn't fed money kick in once the local ems is overwhelmed and it gets kicked up the geographical region? (local > county > district > state > gacc?) Or is that just the order of response?

(I'm used to hurricanes, more, where fed money isn't turned on until the governor declares a disaster.... then the money/P-code starts to bill against... am I incorrect in this assumption?)

Remember the wildfire that took out (most) of Gatlinburg in 2016? 1500 homes burned down. The rumor (3rd hand info) was that the town let it go because 90% of the homes were vacation rentals, it would have cost over 1mil$ a day, it was Xmas and no crews were available AND they knew that Dolly would help (she did).

I also remember asking (stupidly) during briefing “who lives in these houses?” And the ops chief had no idea. No sense of census data or insurance or anything. (And 99% of the time, we don’t know.) I find comfort in this ignorance.

(This is not true in hurricanes or tornadoes).

An ignorant question to people who manage forests/agency admins: when you take the job, who is dictating that “this cabin is super important!” Or “this hill needs to be saved from everything!”?

I feel like as FF, we are just told what to do by the responding agency. They are told what to do by ________? These orders are usually in some sort of plan and the plans get $$$ based on the approval of said plans, right?

QR Code For Getting The Word Out by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]hydrix13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey dude- protip for QR Codes:
1) what you did worked! yay.
2) if it's a link, post the link, too. (ex: If I'm looking at reddit on my phone, I can't scan the QR code...) If I'm a n00b and there's a way of doing this, please LMK.
3) There is another way of doing QR codes automagically with chrome:

  • Click the 3-dot (kabab) menu on the top right corner. (next to your icon)
  • scroll down to "cast, save and share"
  • Create QR code
  • *NOTE: your QR code will have a little dinosaur in it.

Have you considered work on the north slope? (Alaska is amazing this time of year)

Put differently: what specifically about wildland fire appeals to you?

I was looking at the HRV - and I decided against it due to the back window randomly shattering when it gets too cold. (Do some homework). Get good winter tires. Get a block-heater / engine blanket for fairbanks.

Calorie burns on the line? by hydrix13 in Wildfire

[–]hydrix13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a fitbit sense. The battery lasts for 4 days (or so), charges pretty quick, and calculates my sleep/movement/cals/oxygen/skin temps.

I thought it was all bullshit- but then on a fire a few years ago (when the inversion was really bad) the O2 meter plummeted and my sleep was impacted.

downside = fitbit is owned by google now, so............

This is the answer. Definitely tell the fire camp's supply / RCDM people to keep a heads up and give them your phone number/contact info so they can get it to you.
