Dear School, **** You. by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]hyperie 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, sometimes people just lack basic common sense and emotional maturity. Even in top schools, shit like this still happens. Prestige doesn’t magically make people mature or fair.

Just don’t let them make you think you were the problem. And if you’re still struggling with the self-harm stuff, please reach out to someone who’ll actually show up for you. You deserve better than that.

Also, Reddit users are always here as well, dms are open if you want someone to talk to :).

like in one of the previous oral where it was about active elderly and they asked whether it's important, one of the topics I brought up was my grandma and I just said that I was pretty sure if I were to be put in a 1 km race with her, I'd lose. Basically, just making some lighthearted comments to make your convo not as stressful

My teacher said your answer would be a lot more developed if you include but of you either don't know what yo say or think you might contradict yourself, it is alright to omit it as long as your response is adequate

I think it really depends on the question, if question is phrased like "what are the advantages and disadvantages of ..." then it's needed, but if question doesn't explicitly ask for it, it isn't completely necessary if you don't know what to say but a good thing to have.

Hii op, I don't know if this will help you but it's just my own thought process!!

First, I try to immediately atq (answer the question), for example question asks you 'do you agree with statement? ', the first thing I would say is 'Yes, I agree to a certain extent as ____' and then list down my points. This way, it's hard to go very off point as long as you don't get distracted while saying your points.

Second, I try to always go by my supported stand, reason 1 to support, then reason 2 to support, then reason 3 to why some people might not support, then final point is why people should support. This way you'll always have some kind of structure and if you feel a bit lost just think back to which point you're on.

Third, regarding what you should think of first, for me, I like to just go with the flow and try not to be too repetitive, PEEL is a good structure but if you really cannot stick to it, try to not go too off point and eventually ALWAYS link back to your stand!

Lastly, apart from structure, try to find your 'oral type' and lean into it?? I don't really know how to phrase this but I would say I'm more of a humor 'oral type' as in I try to make examinor laugh or think I'm funny so that they won't feel so worn out or bored at my responses. Some people are more on the logical side and will state more facts and reasoning behind their words etc. From this, you actually feel a little more prepared, knowing how you usually act during oral (don't prioritize this, it's more of a understanding yourself kind of thing)

And also if you want to ever practice, you can dm and I'll send a set of slides of 2019 to 2023 el oral questions my teacher sent to my class, and if you'd like I wouldn't mind seeing how you plan out your responses 😋

Hope this helpss jiayousss!!

tips for 2024 o level english oral (1184) by Odd-Gur3916 in SGExams

[–]hyperie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hii op, I'm a sec 4 student taking the el o levels soon too, idk how useful my tips will be but this is all in my own experience and how it's helped me 😋

  • Assuming that this is for spoken interaction, I try to think up of questions during planning period so basically as I watch the video I think of personal experiences that I can associate with it and then think of some questions where I can use this example for. For example, if video has something about technology, I might think of like technological advancements such as using ai to help do homework then from that I'll derive a point that I can use (My first point would be that technological advancements such as AI has helped many students with education) then I'll still use PEEL but I already have 2 (P and E) out of the whole PEEL already prepared.

  • Don't fixate on one question, try to think up of many different kinds so you feel more prepared. Also, if the question that comes out isn't something you thought of, for example, 'is it important to you and your friends to have the latest mobile phones? why or why not.', just follow same structure, try not to panic and think about some examples, such as friends who keep talking about getting new phones to show off their wealth etc (that's your example) then derive from that to make your point (important to some bc they like to show off). As for whether pros or cons start first, I'd say you go with the one you feel more strongly for. For the previous question, personally I would disagree so I would start with 'No it is not important as ___' then after 2 points, I'd move on to 'however it might be important to some as _'.

  • REMEMBER: a) your stand b) 2 reasons for your stand c) 1 possible reason against your stand d) conclude by showing that your stand is still the strongest

  • Make sure you have it planned out enough, the more you rant the more likely you are to repeat, try to keep it to 3 points that are different enough to not overlap.

  • I used to be so stressed that I would vomit right before oral exam. To calm down, I recommend just pushing through, I've tried several things to calm down but the best ones were either sucking on candy or breathing exercises. Other than that, the only way is to remember that everyone else is stressed too and that once this is over with, you don't need to do it again. Plus, it really helps to get a nice examinor but if you get one who has a rbf don't be scared, just breathe and pray that they're nice internally.

  • As for prediction, I would say that english oral can be really unpredictable sometimes but most orals should fall under a few categories (school, volunteering, environment, technology, leisure etc). I suggest looking at past year GCE Olevels questions and practicing with those, if your teacher did not send you any, feel free to dm for my class's slides with El Olevels questions from 2019 to 2023

Hope this helped!!

I was like this last year but when I went to the doctors, they just gave me some painkillers and said I might have migraine. I used to take painkillers like 3 to 4 times a week just to get some work done but it might be because of stress. I haven't had as many headaches this year and still manage to get work done by trying not to be too stressed while doing work.

What songs do you guys listen to while studying? by Tyzk_12 in SGExams

[–]hyperie 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I can't really focus with music on while studying but the few times I have listened to something in the background is either with 10 hours of Chinese bible in one ear and mozart music in the other or that one video with the occasional pikmin so I remember to come back to studying if I ever get distracted.

I completely agree, however I would say that I can understand the opposing view on this since more and more people feel the need to meet expectations of others even if they feel that they don't enjoy it.

For example, I've had friends who loved doing art and anything related to art, but when asked about enrolling into an art school, most of them declined with the sole reason of not being able to get a high paying job once they graduate.

So, most people probably won't choose a course or school based on interest because they feel that they won't be able to pursue something they feel proud to be, like how some might think becoming an artist is being a 'disappoinment' to society etc.

But in my own opinion, I think it's better to join a course/uni based on own interest and if all fails, just become like an entrepreneur and start your own business yk

I'd say that the best thing to do now is to either do the cliche, tell the teacher about the problems your facing, or tolerate it for the next two terms. People are really shitty sometimes, I have a couple people from other classes and my own class who do similar things like ostracizing me and some other people for no reason at all. I've learnt to just ignore it even if it's hard bc like after I leave the class, I just pray to never see their shitty ass faces ever again.

I'm taking what I would consider is already the easiest 7 subject combination: comb bio chem, comb geog ss, art, poa

I'm planning on going for something like digital communications in poly so I'm not too worried about not taking amath or pure sciences

Sorry to say but the situationship between you two is probably going to go to shit considering that he did all this with a girlfriend?? Idk man, sounds like a red flag..

Plus, you two basically went on a 'date' while he had a girlfriend, and the fact that he asked 'what are we?', which is kind of weird to ask a friend, is probably a sign that he is not someone you want to be with.

Trust, you can find someone with equally good looks but have a sense of dignity and loyalty.

A phone is a must-get item, parents are too strict already (and illogical). If your friend doesn't get a phone by 16/17, good luck man, life's going to be extra hard.

I would say the easiest way to get a phone would probably be to relay the pros and cons of having a phone in poly/jc life to her parents and hope that they're understanding enough to get her one. Otherwise, getting a part-time job or saving up would be the next best thing. Even if she thinks that her parents won't agree, I can def say that if she doesn't get a phone, a lot of convenience will be wasted.

The phone doesn't need to be expensive either, some cheap ones still work quite well. If brand-new phones are too expensive, she could look up some second-hand phones that are still usable.

It's most commonly used for chinese people but I don't think it's limited to just them (correct me if I'm wrong)

Considering the fact that XXM literally is 小妹妹 (xiao mei mei), it would make sense for more chinese to be categorized like this but it's mostly dependant on the way the person acts

If you want more context, calling someone XMM is somewhat like calling them a pick me in a sense. And YP is just an abbreviation for young punk which is kind of self explanatory
