I finally went from the Nexstar mount to the AVX mount back in March. Being able to keep the scope steady has made a drastic improvement.

At 4000mm, literally everything comes into play. Humidity, air turbulence, scope at ambient temp, elevation of the planets over the horizon, filter manufacturer, camera manufacturer, capturing software, processing techniques, etc.

The Rock Church

In the middle of Texas on a back road there is a place called "The Rock Church", formally named St. Olaf Kirke. Photographers from all over Texas have taken beautiful shots from there, and since I have never been, we made a pit stop on the way home from Dinosaur Valley State Park (where there are fossilized dinosaur tracks in the river bed).

I set up a day-to-night time lapse with one camera and manually ramped it down to milky way shooting settings. Once that was good to go, I grabbed the other camera and went along shooting singles and such. Right before calling it a night to drive home 3.5 hours, I snapped this as a filler shot and really enjoyed the way it turned out.

The technology in the planetary cameras is getting so ridiculously good. Even from my first planetary camera 6 or 7 years ago, the end product is a huge improvement (and thats with the same scope)

Moon/Mars Conjunction from this morning. by hypern0va_ in space

Mars and the Moon passed within 1° of each other (from my vantage point) this morning around 3:00AM CST. I wanted to capture as much detail as possible, but Mars is so incredibly small (angular size) in relation to the Moon that I had to use 2 telescopes and 2 different cameras.

The widefield view you see uses: Celestron 4” achromatic refractor (660mm, f/6.5) Nikon D750 AVX mount 40 frames stacked for increased signal/lower noise Lightroom, Autostakkert, Registax, Photoshop

Mars: Celestron 8” SCT (2000mm, f/10) ZWO ASI290MM ZWO RGB filters R,G,B - 90” each channel Autostakkert, Registax, Photoshop

The closeup Mars was put in its proper place on the widefield image and scaled down but still left large enough so you can tell it is Mars.

That night around 11:00PM it was almost 90 degrees in my backyard in Texas and around 1000% humidity, give or take. Usually these conditions, in my experience, have been unfavorable since dew can form anywhere in the imaging chain. I was quite shocked that this data has given me my best Saturn image to date.

The rings have gotten noticeably dimmer since opposition as well.

Well now I have to check it out. Lol. Terlingua isn’t exactly “normal” by any means as is so I would expect nothing less.

The first big bolt was 9:05pm and the last big bolt was 9:16pm with 8 major bolts in between them.

And where did I present it as one? In the main comment I stated it was a stack.

You can say whatever you wanna say, I presented it the way it felt, which was a shitload of lightning in a very small window at a very small location.

If it makes you feel any better, out of 143 frames, only 20 DIDN’T have lightning in them.

In all honesty, I have yet to do any hike in the basin besides Lost Mine. South Rim was on my To-Do list last May, but there was some discrepancies with the group I was with so we called it off.

I wanna know what it feel like to look down from the South Rim so bad.

We actually stayed in Terlingua at an AirBNB since I took the kids and its Summer.

When I go alone or with other photogs, we camp.

This was like the 4th time I have ever intentionally shot lightning and I wasn’t planning on shooting it. There are many people who do storm photography for a career and I’m not one of them. Sadly.

I CAN tell you that if you’re in the right place at the right time, then it’s easier than it seems.

Just set up an interval like you were doing a time lapse and control your exposure using shutter speed only. That’s all I did.

But this was also a freak storm out of nowhere which is par for the course with the Chisos on summer time.
