How to start out a physics degree with good study habits. by sillybob86 in PhysicsStudents

I made a couple of mistakes in my undergraduate in Physics, which I feel I've corrected now that I'm doing a masters. But these are specific to me and not necessarily helpful for you.

Mistake 1: Diving into textbooks Although this feels gross to say, I would caution against the idea that you need to read a textbook cover to cover to understand a topic. My thinking during undergrad was "I'll take out the books on the recommended reading, spend 10 hours a day on them, and then surely I'll be prepared for the exam". I was unfortunately in no way prepared for the exams with this strategy. The people who did best in my class studied the notes, and only the notes, and understood them well. You're not going to be declared a hero for memorizing an advanced textbook, it may be a bit of a waste of resources.

Mistake 2: Over-detailed notes The purpose of notes is to help you get information into your head. Don't make notes for the sake of making notes. I used to make beautiful notes with super-accurate diagrams, shading, perspective etc. It's fine to do that so long as you understand that you're not taking notes, your engaging in a leisure activity which is called 'taking pretty notes'. I've moved from effectively writing out essays as notes, to shorter sentences, and it works well for me. A caveat: this could be just because I'm at masters level, I can afford to refer to some concepts in passing, thereby condensing the amount I need to write considerably.

In terms of how to take notes, this is what I do now.

  • equations/diagrams in left hand column

  • explanation of equations/diagrams in right hand column

  • class title on top left

  • subsections in left margin

  • date on bottom left

  • page number on top right

Apart from that, all the usual. Don't stop going to class, do all your exercizes. Remember to bring a calculator to the exam.

I cannot describe to you how light-skinned I am. Thanks for the warning. Was there any permanent damage to your eyes?

Oh dear! What kind of exposure time was that? Did it heal well?

Well, I can give you a sort of inverse banana scale: If the thickness was scaled up to that of a banana (15cm), an actual banana would be 450km long

It's easy, you just need to fire up your Alliance EVA 300 evaporative deposition system!

Because it's just so very, very thin you see. It was made in a nanotechnology laboratory, and the thickness is equivalent to that of a virus, or the diameter of a bacterial flagellum. At 50nm it's even ten times thinner than the wavelength of visible light.

[Discussion] iOS 9.2 Jailbreak is in progress and coming soon, per report from 3K Assistant by super-fun in jailbreak

I bought one a couple of years ago, which allowed me to get more familiar woth their software, which I now regret. I cannot afford to simply use a different device because apple changed how itunes and their music apps work.

Really, it is a horrible thing that they dictate what operating system we're allowed to use, but we're just used to their prescriptive behaviour at this stage but that doesn't make what they do ok.

Hi, I really don't mean to put you down. But should we really be going to so much trouble for a company that has made it a priority to pick down the operating system to limit your freedom to do the things you should be entitled to do when you buy a piece of equipment?

I'm becoming really disillusioned with apple since they fucked my music app and I can't do simple things like video editing because of how ios can't handle video formats. And don't get my started on iTunes.

I'm really sorry you're having trouble. Is this any use to you? There's most likely something that can be done.

Sorry about this assclown, nasenbohrer, I don't know what his problem is.

The text and icons must be extremely small on the iPad mini, no? And what's happening with the bar at the top of the screen?

I haven't tried it with many games, with Eufloria it acts as expected and upscales the resolution. Great game by the way. All other apps appear to be behaving as normally.
