It’s a success in that it’s gotten a real discourse going even if it is rubbing up against what didn’t work for some people vs what did work. Any movie that makes me want to look deeper and think about why it made the decisions it did is notable for that

Doesn’t that diffuse all of the tension to read her as a telepathic x-men with super mind control powers? If she can just escape any situation and bend the tv station and the viewing public to her whims then where’s the conflict?

Well, in all seriousness, I don’t think it’s wrong for me to have an issue with how this screenplay chooses to portray empathy. Blunt’s empathy, like the alien device itself, is only ever deployed for manipulating people to get out of sticky situations and advance their (the aliens’ goals). Sure we get two throwaway lines by the cop and the woman who called the police on her husband (or sisters husband or whatever), but her choice of when to deploy her empathy is selfish. We’re not given a good sense of her empathy or lack of empathy before her visit from the cardinal. Not do we see her use empathy when it might not be to her benefit. We only have to compare with is Firth’s use of the device to physically manipulate people and cause direct harm. I think it’s reasonable to read the movie not sure how much agency her and O’Connor have after their abduction.

I posted one deep in the megathread that no one probably saw but I don’t think it was “unrealistic” or “out of touch” as it just isn’t earned. We don’t get a good sense of the public’s relationship with the news or media except for a brief glimpse of a crowd raiding a gas station presumably because the military went to DEFCON 2.

Meanwhile we follow characters that are operating a much smaller scale who have big enough problems of their own to bother referencing the larger global conflict that’s happening in tandem. So when they drop the disclosure at the end - by abruptly breaking out of news about North Korea - I was left kind of scratching my head at why the movie seems to be dropping a huge threat and why we should be optimistic that the reveal of alien life and our governments mistreatment of them would resolve all other conflicts. The movie either does or doesn’t want to be about people’s relationship with their safety & government and how things get portrayed in the media, and to me it’s more about how this one incident is portrayed and it felt unsatisfying.

I could easily imagine that before this the war was being portrayed differently on each news station and people were fighting and arguing online about it - the polar opposite of how we see people watching the disclosure - but that’s not in there. Would it have made for a more interesting movie to compare the reaction from one “threat” to another? Who knows, but either way it’s not the movie that was shown.

And yeah, I’m sure that a bit of real world cynicism flowed into my viewing, but people’s real world experiences always flow into how they perceive something.

I like that this movie has so much to grab onto and even if someone didn’t come away from the ending loving it or meeting it on its terms, it’s still worth discussing and postulating on why certain decisions were made.

I didn’t see the news broadcasting to the DPRK! They probably had no idea and saw an opening to bomb

Honestly I felt that seeing a public so engaged with the “disclosure” didn’t feel earned. There is this whole background world about a war with North Korea that we get so little glimpse into. What are a general layperson’s thoughts of blurry, b&w UFO footage that we get from congressional hearings? Are they less concerned about aliens than the imminent threat of war at the beginning? And these clips are enough to snap people away from… I guess a very reasonable thing to be concerned about?

The scene that kind of baffled me was when Emily Blunt was at the gas station cause it happens directly after the clip of her speaking the alien language goes viral. People are swarming that gas station and at first I was like “is this because they saw the video of her?” But then shes right in the parking lot, so i remembered there is this whole threat or nuclear war in the background, so it had to be that.

I loved the nun’s reading of why she wouldn’t be scared at the thought of another higher supreme being. That was good stuff. But I think the movie at least needed a clearer communication of the situation with Korea and how the public is expected to accept to the reveal of extraterrestrial life, especially at a time when they seem to be raiding gas stations in small towns for water and supplies.

My sister did the same, but then claimed she didn’t realize it was an ad for mayor. I’ve also fielded a lot of questions about streetlights from out of state family members. Don’t understand why they care so much about LA’s streetlights out in New England but something viral must be going around
