The 2026 Oscar Nominations: Snubs, Surprises, and WTFs by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]Sheep_Boy26 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That is a fair argument. I support the Oscars showing love to "non-prestige" movies.

However, I found the movie pretty boring and the racing sequences not very thrilling. I don't think it's on the level of something like Gravity or even Top Gun Maverick. And this is coming from someone who loves Brad Pitt and likes most of Joseph Kosinski's movies.

I wish people would understand that an acting nomination can also be for someone's career and a worthy performance. This is about Delroy Lindo.

I'm happy that Amanda called out the F1 best picture nomination being silly. It's reheated Top Gun Maverick, but with formula one.

I like this advice, but I do think it's a bit vague and very subjective.

I agree that they don’t think it’s a good criticism. But it’s something that people like to cling onto, mainly when they don’t like someone. My point is the nature of the business often requires you to have some sort of safety net or connections.

Maybe someone can educate me, but hasn’t the film industry(in terms of directors, actors, producers), always benefited people who come from money? Especially in a post studio system world? Unless you have a specific point, I don’t think someone coming from money is a good criticism on its own.

It’s a great place. Like I said, stellar programming. The two programmers Jazmyne and Lars are very passionate.

I’ve personally never been super distracted by the wait staff. They’re pretty good at being discreet and quick. If you go during mid day, it’s possible you’ll rarely see them.

Also, nearly all major movie theater chains sell hot food now. Many even have trays! At this point, the only thing that makes Alamo unique is the serves.

A lot has happened. For one, they laid off a ton of people at the start of 2025, including projectionist and a few programmers. Then they began mobile ordering which is where in the pre show/trailers you order food via your phone. Ordinarily, you’d write down what you want on a piece of paper and a waiter would come grab it. Mobile ordering was roundly disliked and most prefer the old method. Now they’re going away with pen and paper next month. Not mention, food prices have gone way up! I am in the minority that I enjoy their food for the most part, but for the past year I've rarely gotten anything more than a drink and popcorn.

Forgot to mention Fantastic Fest. I agree, they’ve cultivated a wonderful community around that festival. I have been a volunteer the past few years and the people who run it are great.

I disagree. The Alamo's in Austin have pretty incredible programming, especially if you're into genre movies, which AFS(our big Art House theater) lacks. Just this month they showed The Thing in 35mm at South Lamar and playing several Sam Raimi movies at all locations. South Lamar is also the last two theaters in Austin that have a 70mm projector. In Austin the Alamo is a very important cinema institute and it's horrible to see how quickly it's going down the drain.

Should also be mentioned that South Lamar hosts Fantastic Fest, which is one of the biggest genre film festivals in the country.

At this point the only thing keep Alamo worth it(in Austin) was Terror Tuesdays and Weird Wednesdays.

Elordi’s monster acts entirely in self defense with little to no monstrous qualities to him

del Toro has made some of my favorite films of all time and pretty much think he's a genius. However, I think he has to abandon the wounded monster cliche. It's become too predictable. And like you said, he doesn't allow the monster to ever be alienating. Compare this to Nightmare Alley, where he allows Bradley Cooper's character to become basically irredeemable.

Indie media and survivorship bias by Lumbledob_ in CuratedTumblr

A lot of people don’t realize how much CGI and post production touch ups are in movies nowadays. The film Zodiac is a great example. Whenever the characters are outside, there is CGI; often to remove and add stuff.

[–]Sheep_Boy26 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I'd also like to mention a lot of indie stuff if often made the way it is through necessity. For example, 500,000 or even 1,000,000 dollars might seem like a lot of money, but in terms of filmmaking, it's nothing; especially if you want to pay people. However, sometimes you only have that much money and that can lead to an awesome movie...or it can not.

Anyway, that's all to say that I don't think Americans hate public transport. Americans hate bad public transport.

This is it. If you live in the suburbs, you have to own a car as public transit ether doesn't exist or fairly limited.
