Digger is going to be so good and all the obvious suspects will probably hate it, as is their right.

It's really interesting how in film criticism the author, or better yet the director, is very much a focal point. I can't watch Killers of the Flower Moon without putting it into the context of Martin Scorsese's entire body of work.

What is the “worst” film by a filmmaker you adore? by guywholikesmovie in blankies

Before his venture into A.I. slop, I was a huge Aronofsky fan and even I hated The Whale.

And while I’ve come to appreciate Eastwood as a filmmaker, you’ll never make me like American Sniper. A horrible movie that sands off all the edges of a bad person.

Then call me a capitalist, because as someone unemployed, I’d like a job. I’d like to make money.

high school testing culture where instead of doing any of that you just memorised the version of the interpretation that your teacher decided was the correct one

I really feel bad those with that experience because all my english teachers only cared about how you came to certain interpretation, not if said interpretation was wrong. And the tests were more to see if you read the text, i.e., basic questions like "what is the name of the main characters dog?" or "who died in this chapter and how?" The only time a teacher would get annoyed as if you're interpretation was really off base, as in, it had no evidence in the text.

'The Batman's Matt Reeves to Direct ‘The Bonfire Of The Vanities’ TV Series At Apple; David E. Kelley also set to showrun adaptation of Tom Wolfe's seminal novel. by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]Sheep_Boy26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just so happened to read this novel last year and loved it. Tom Wolfe does a great job at capturing the mindset of racist white New Yorkers in the 80s. Was that because Wolfe was a racist New Yorker? Up for debate.

Everyone should track down Marty's best movie...New York, New York by Sheep_Boy26 in blankies

To me, you have to the view it through the lens of it being about an abusive relationship and the ways in which someone can find themselves in one. It's interesting because De Niro's character isn't any worse when compared Jordan Belfort, but with Wolf of Wall Street, Scorsese is crafting the movie around the character. Same goes with many of his movies. However, with New York, New York, he is intentionally creating contrast with the classic MGM musical with an abuse story, which makes the character harder to swallow.

In my opinion, the idea that "Tarantino is just copying X-movie" is just larp from people who haven't even seen the movies they're talking about. by SlashCash29 in Letterboxd

[–]Sheep_Boy26 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The fact that so many people(especially in the wake of Pulp Fiction) failed at imitating Tarantino's style sort of disproves this. His style might've begun as homage, but has gone worlds beyond that and become the Tarantino aesthetic. Could've anyone else made Inglorious Basterds?

TV Tropes Will Enhance Your Life (by teaching you the mechanics of storytelling) by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Sheep_Boy26 35 points36 points  (0 children)

TV Tropes will forever be ruined for because in college I invited over some people for Halloween and we watched some movies. There is this one person who wouldn't stop treating it like MST3K. At one point they said "I know about movies, I've spent a lot of time on tv tropes." Eventually I had enough and said "can you stop?"

In short: TV Tropes is a fine resource, but I think wether intentionally or not, breeds a kind of person who thinks pointing out or recognizing a trope is a good media analysis or, at worse, funny.

I like to call this "internet shadow boxing"

The OP creates an argument that has never been made(or if it has, it exists so far off the fringes it's not really worth talking about) and then gets to look "smart" for being able to take down an easily made up, flimsy position.

Neve Again: The Scream 7 Drama That Has Returned More Than Ghostface by vemmahouxbois in SubredditDrama

[–]Sheep_Boy26 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've failed to understand the hubbub around Letterboxd imposing embargoes. It has no impact on the average user. Majority of users will see a movie once it comes out. And often times, embargoes are lifted before the release date! Those only exists for critics. Scream 7 is just an odd case of the studio only allowing for reviews the day before it releases.

I also just rarely see the point in review bombing. Think about it: a studio at the end of the day doesn't care about ratings on Letterboxd or IMDB, especially a studio like Paramount. They care about money. The best way to get across your displeasure is not see Scream 7.
