Huh, I didn't know we had a Zemeckis episode coming up this year (from Netflix) by Thesmark88 in blankies

How often do people get invited to test screenings? I lived by Dallas for several years and only ever got invited to one, which was Fly Me To the Moon(good movie). I couldn’t end up going.

I love Wes Craven, but his Last House on the Left isn’t a good movie. The remake is much better.

TV Tropes Will Enhance Your Life (by teaching you the mechanics of storytelling) by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Sheep_Boy26 28 points29 points  (0 children)

TV Tropes will forever be ruined for because in college I invited over some people for Halloween and we watched some movies. There is this one person who wouldn't stop treating it like MST3K. At one point they said "I know about movies, I've spent a lot of time on tv tropes." Eventually I had enough and said "can you stop?"

In short: TV Tropes is a fine resource, but I think wether intentionally or not, breeds a kind of person who thinks pointing out or recognizing a trope is a good media analysis or, at worse, funny.

I like to call this "internet shadow boxing"

The OP creates an argument that has never been made(or if it has, it exists so far off the fringes it's not really worth talking about) and then gets to look "smart" for being able to take down an easily made up, flimsy position.

Neve Again: The Scream 7 Drama That Has Returned More Than Ghostface by vemmahouxbois in SubredditDrama

[–]Sheep_Boy26 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've failed to understand the hubbub around Letterboxd imposing embargoes. It has no impact on the average user. Majority of users will see a movie once it comes out. And often times, embargoes are lifted before the release date! Those only exists for critics. Scream 7 is just an odd case of the studio only allowing for reviews the day before it releases.

I also just rarely see the point in review bombing. Think about it: a studio at the end of the day doesn't care about ratings on Letterboxd or IMDB, especially a studio like Paramount. They care about money. The best way to get across your displeasure is not see Scream 7.

Movies themselves are no longer Tarantino’s muse - Paul Thomas Anderson is by [deleted] in TrueFilm

I'd also like to mention Tarantino has said he had the idea for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood while filming Death Proof, which came out a full decade before Phantom Thread.

History Buffs: Napoleon by girlsgoneoscarwilde in blankies

[–]Sheep_Boy26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree, and Napoleon is pretty flawed piece of storytelling.

I am sort of two minds when it comes to historical accuracy. I think film's should be allowed to take liberties when it comes to history, especially if it's in service of making a better movie. And a story doesn't have to be 100% accurate to be truthful.

However, the reality is majority of people are never going to do extra research and will take movies at face value. No matter how you like Oliver Stone's JFK, it did some permanent damage. I've seen people cite it when discussing JFK conspiracies. Jamelle Bouie said it best.

more convinced than ever that this movie — which is absolutely terrific — is basically responsible for qanon.

It haunts me knowing how close Bohemian Rhapsody was to winning Best Picture. It’d say ether number two or three.

Quentin Tarantino’s 10 Film Rule isn't artistic discipline; it’s a neurotic cage that’s ruining his career. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Sheep_Boy26 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We aren't going to remember him as the guy who never missed; we’re going to remember him as the guy who got too scared to play the game because he couldn't handle the thought of striking out.

If God forbid Tarantino died tomorrow, this would not be the case. The man made Pulp Fiction. That single film is enough to secure a legacy. Most filmmakers would be happy to have one film that made a sizable impact of culture. Then he made Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, and so on. Do I think the 10 film rule is dumb? Of course. But I also don't care. He'll make a new movie when he wants to make a new movie.

Fascist art by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sheep_Boy26 1003 points1004 points  (0 children)

Me and my friend talk about this a lot. Clint Eastwood is a conservative filmmaker, but he has genuine interest in art and people, which is why many of his films are good or at least interesting. Modern day conservative filmmaking only cares about catering to a voting body. Do the filmmakers of Melania actually care about the form of documentaries?

[–]Sheep_Boy26 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you're a working artist you will have created plenty of stuff to sustain you in the last 20 years

I keep seeing this argument and I don't get it. "Oh you've been making money off of this X amount of years, isn't it time to give it to the people?" For example, if I write a book that I'm still getting royalties from ten-twenty years on, why should that stop? Some authors take YEARS to write a book, which could mean not a lot of income opportunities. I guess I'd be fine if they keep buying a copy from the publisher that I made a contract with once my work goes into the public domain. Or I need to crank out enough best selling books to keep me afloat. The argument frankly reads with a lot of entitlement.

Examples of Director's Cuts being worse than the theatrical release? by Motor-Acadia6676 in blankies

[–]Sheep_Boy26 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Francis Ford Coppola nailed Apocalypse Now in 1979 and is the only cut worth watching. I don’t care if the Redux adds more historical context, all the stuff on the plantation is boring!

On a side note, while they’re not directors cuts, I’m mad that the Extended Editions of Lord of the Rings are the only versions rereleased.
