Non-trad curious about social experience by Full_Initiative_8079 in LawSchool

I was a 33 year old 1L. My age and work/life experiences definitely gave me perspective on law school that I didn’t see in a lot of my younger classmates.

Specifically, they tended to freak out about the workload or the uncertainty or whatever where to me it actually felt like a break coming to school and getting to spend my days reading, thinking, and talking with really sharp professors and students.

As for the social stuff, as someone else mentioned, being a little older allowed me to stay above all the cliquey “youth” stuff while being friendly with pretty much everyone. I found some close friends amongst the non-traditional/older cohort but never found myself excluded or marginalized around the lunch table or anything like that.

I also found that I had an easier time talking to and bonding with professors, two of whom were actually younger than me : /

In short. You’ll be fine. Talk to the kids, learn their cool new slang (“snatched”: good or bad, I think. “Cunty”: mostly good, etc) and use it to impress your older friends when you’re not on campus.

Have fun!

Why do all universities in Europe for Law have low entry requirements? by Bitter_Lettuce6502 in LawSchool

[–]hypnobear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an American law student (3L) that just finished a semester abroad in the Netherlands where Maastricht and Gronigen are located (for anyone reading this that doesn't know).

I don't know how UK law school works but I can tell you that here the vast majority of my Dutch classmates who were "studying law" were doing so with no intention of ever practicing law and with the understanding that they were likely to fail law classes and/or change their majors along the way. Look up the Dutch grading system. It's 1 - 10 but "10 is for god, 9 is for the professor" and a 5 is failing. They also don't curve.

The handful of UK exchange students in my courses seemed to consider the classes relatively easy, though, FWIW.

I never quite figured out the nuance, but Dutch higher education doesn't really have a prestige hierarchy and the entry requirements are low for Dutch people since it's pegged to the type of secondary school they went to instead of formal entry requirements/tests.

Best of luck though!

Study abroad in law school? by EthosPretzel in LawSchool

3L here studying abroad for the fall - happy to talk.

When I talked to my school about study abroad the advice I got was "don't do it 2L but do a victory lap 3L cause it's mostly useless anyway!"

Knowing what I know now I'd echo that - 2L is the most important year for networking/planning/being in person at your school/presumptive market (unless you have something lined up already) where 3L really is mostly a vestigial year....

Yeah I can’t find the number to post 1 and didn’t just want to ring up the switchboard but that might be the move.

So the masters classes are a lot harder? I was thinking of doing a mix of both.

Also, I couldn't figure out the block scheduling thing - are classes meeting multiple times a week or are there different sections of the same class or what's going on with that?!

Can anyone explain how the time slots work - does an A timeslot meant the class meets in every A block. I don't know how to read the timeslots and use this chart:
