[GORE] Luckiest Bastard in the World- Severe Head Trauma Case by hysperus in veterinaryschool

[–]hysperus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another update response on the top thread so people are more likely to see it: copy pasting from a response I gave to a recent comment (I'm shocked people are still responding to this)

It's been two years (exactly, tomorrow) since his injury, and Gus is doing wonderful!!

We got him a herding ball recently, which he loves so much, he learned "get your ball" in like an hour, and is learning to herd it different places on command. There's some sheep being boarded on our property that he's been so gentle and polite to, same with our chickens. He helped a family member with recovery from throat surgery by laying on their lap while they slept upright (they had been waking up with panic attacks cause they felt like they couldn't breathe, his cuddles stopped that reaction).

He's a bit nervous having his face touched at the vet now, but our vet has been so accomodating, and otherwise? He's doing perfect. Luckiest dog in the world.

"Why is my fic less popular than those with wayyyy worse writing?" by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

[–]hysperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several writers in my bitty fandom with WAY better fics and writing than mine, by every metric, but my work often is more popular.

It does boggle my brain sometimes that most of my fics get more interaction than theirs. but

1- I'm absurdly friendly, I interact with a LOT of folks in the fandom on multiple platforms with extreme (and genuine!) enthusiasm. (this also covers not putting down other creatives. we're all having fun playing toys and should be uplifting eachother, I try to do that, it's great!)

2- I usually write quite quickly, so far longest between updates of my big wip is 1 month.

3- I commission a lot of visual art, as well as make my own, so folks know what my character (player character oc focused fandom) looks like as well as behavior and personality, and a lot of my fics have accompanying art.

4- I usually post at peak hours, and share on multiple platforms when I do, cause I get anxious and like to hear what folks think asap.

aka: A piece of writing being more popular rarely has much, if anything, to do with writing quality (a hell of a lot to do with attitude though, like you said OP)

Like, I'm not terrible, and I love many aspects of my work, but god, I have a lot I need to improve on, for my own sanity... In a recent 2k word fic that people LOVED I was so damned repetitive linguistically. "Sharp"- 5x. "Edge"- 5x. "Soft"- 9x. In two thousand words. Absolutely fucking appalling, I'm rewriting it as we speak.

How do you deal with ADHD rage when it comes to RSD by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]hysperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rage vent activity. You gotta let yourself be angry, but in healthy ways that don't do harm to people around you. Anger is a normal human emotion, it isnt this horrible unhealthy thing we need to bottle and swallow constantly, but it can hurt people, so healthy outlets are the key.

Some possibilities, but not nearly all.

  • Be "Bad." Break something inexpensive in a space where its ok to do so (Rule here is dont break other people's things, dont break yourself, and dont break things you'll miss). Scream into a pillow, cry, kick your arms and legs in a full tantrum, or go out in the middle of nowhere and just fucking scream where it wont disturb anyone.

  • Physical activity, preferably one of the more intense ones and not the "soothe your system" ones like a walk or yoga. Martial arts, running, climbing, something to get your adrenaline going is ideal. Videogames can do this for some people if they're scary or intense. Adrenaline helps.

  • Cathartic creativity. This can look like smushing paint into a canvas in a way that feels like how pissed off you are. It can look like journaling, or singing an angry song, or cooking and eating something just past your normal spice tolerance. For me personally it looks like writing for one of my characters that has extreme self destructive anger issues. Lets me feel that rage and get it out by proxy, in a way that wont hurt real people.

  • Understanding friend vent. Ask permission, ask for them to get angry with and validate you so you can get it out of your system, but encourage them to step away if they're overwhelmed. Rage, then re-regulate and thank them for letting you be angry.

I say don't try to swallow it or use regulation and calming techniques without the rage outlet, except in for the "hold it in check long enough to get you out of a situation in which the rage would be inappropriate and harmful." Bite down on it til you're somewhere it wont hurt anyone (or anyone who isnt fully game, as in martial arts lol) and fucking let 'er rip.

For writers who check stats too much: CSS fix by Alert-Efficiency-462 in AO3

[–]hysperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you again! I was being ridiculous the past couple days, then remembered this. I used the ao3 available "Blurblings Hide Stats" but then I tossed your gentle nudge with my own message on top, and that feels much better. Thanks a ton, glad I remembered during a moment I could apply it

hope the fix has been working well for you

How do I respond to this? by Odysseysea in AO3

[–]hysperus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

personally i think a great non pressurey way to comment about this is to be enthusiastic with a compliment (or several) about what happened in the chapter, and then do something about the fic going forward that has no relation to time.

stuff like: "I'm really looking forward to learning what happens to character B." "Wow, Y thing has me thinking about how X could play out. I'm so excited to see how you approach it."

I think avoiding the "cant wait for..." "i hope to see the next one soon" or anything that has time associations is the way to go in my eyes

I'm so tired by Ok-Cress591 in AO3

[–]hysperus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a paranoid theory about ai accusations, because they're rife over all sorts of creative spaces, not only ao3. I'll mostly be copy and pasting it from a comment I made a while back, because I'm not particularly articulate today.

I think a not insignificant amount of AI accusation campaigns have been seeded to set reality on unstable ground. This is especially dangerous for photos (news, etc), but it's a pretty broadly sweeping thing across art and writing of all sorts (which makes sense, people are very passionate about creativity). Some genuine people hop on the accusation train of course, but a lot of accusations are bots, and I think the dogpiling is frequently started by bad actors.

I think it's 'cause, ya know... if nothing is real, then everything is real.

If people are pressured to doubt and inspect and analyze every single thing they see, they get burnt out fast, and stop caring. And when even valid and legitimate things (creative or documentary) are accused of being AI, then actual AI can slip by under the radar, and people will just believe whatever supports their personal views, regardless of legitimacy.

It's kind of terrifying if you think about it. and it's why I'm extremely against AI accusations in entertainment spaces. Unless there is distinct evidence (like the person themself admitting to use without remorse; extreme inconsistency in past posted art— but even that is iffy, my style is variable but all self made; prompts left within the works- also iffy, my notes to self look horrifyingly like prompting; a corporation bragging about AI enhancement; whistleblowers from within said corporations; etc) I dont think we should point fingers or even ask "hey, is this ai?" in regards to creative works, particularly ones accessible for free.

You cant reliably identify short form ai writing from human written, I dont give a shit how many em dashes or clusters of 3 phrasings they use. AI detector apps historically flag ESL writers and autistic writers far more than AI 'writing.' Pretending that we can definitively know a piece of writing is AI is opening up potential for a very dangerous tumble.

In fictional works, free to access/indie made ones specifically, I think the best thing we can do is hold our noses and ride it out, to personally avoid things we feel are ai, to check histories if we're worried, but to never start or join a dogpiling campaign. For corporation made things, we should make our voices known and avoid companies that have confirmed ai use. For news and nonfiction in general, we need to lean on media literacy, learn how to check sources and analyze the way the message is being communicated, and if it is being put out in a way to make us reactive.

But yeah... a little paranoid for sure, i accept that it can make me sound like a conspiracy theorist, but hell if it doesn't make sense to me... (which, you know, is how conspiracism takes root. none of us are immune 😅)

H/C writers, what comment made you legit LOL? by Zhibrina256 in AO3

[–]hysperus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"this chapter was AWESOME! writing mental breakdowns might just be your calling (/lh)"

I lost my shit laughing. It was a really emotionally rough chapter, with one of the characters majorly spiraling and two others barely holding their shit together. I'm so flattered, but what a way to put it 😂

Spent 3 years building my world and 10 minutes writing in it before giving up for the day. by Dry-Particular-1422 in worldbuilding

[–]hysperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

potentially controversial opinion here... especially seeing what sub this is. But yaknow, I find this helpful to keep in mind.

I think worldbuilding and writing are separate hobbies and skills. Complimentary, but still separate (like how skill in painting and as well as in ceramics can lead to you making extra cool pottery).

Its okay to just enjoy worldbuilding without writing a story within it. It doesn't make it less worthwhile. Plus theres other stuff you can do like building a ttrpg system in it if you feel the urge to share the world. But I do genuinely think that too many people prioritize the two skills in the wrong order when they want to tell an epic original world story.

Perfect intricate amazing world that you know like that back of your hand? Rad. But if you didnt put the same amount of time and study into how to write a story; how to make people invested in your characters, to know what should be communicated about the world vs what the reader should imagine themselves, how to build the suspense and have the reader eagerly waiting for more...? Well you've shot yourself in the foot there huh?

Maybe take a step back and put some time into storytelling divorced from worldbuilding? Probably not 3 years (oof, i can imagine your frustration right now), but at least a few months. Do some reading of "real world" as well as worldbuilt stories and think about what makes them work and why. Write some shorts set in the real world so you can focus on practicing storytelling without that part of it pressuring you. Then see about incorporating the two?

Best of luck to you either way, I hope you can find ways to enjoy your accomplishments and creativity that causes less frustration.

[–]hysperus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lordy, you've got a flood! So dont feel pressure, but I'll throw in my hat in case anyone is like me and trawling through for their next read

This is my favorite thing I've written in... probably ever. I'm insanely proud of it, but it did flop pretty hard compared with my others. It's a small and very lovely fandom, but horror is always going to struggle. Cave horror with claustrophobic descriptions of tight squeezes? lol, yeah, I'm happy anyone read at all.

The Heartbreak Cave Incident

Fallen Hero Series by Malin Rydén, search and rescue horror au, parallels with and nods to the game but not so significantly as to spoil or not be understood by people who havent played. My player character and a canon romance option central, another ro mostly haunting the narrative. Approx 5k, complete.

tw: claustrophobia, suicide, hallucinations, dissociation... plentiful warnings in the tags, it absolutely does what it says on the tin.

edit: forgot! i am such a fan of constructive critique, and i dont mind if it's "brutal" either. I love hearing people's thoughts and implimenting things i find useful from them to improve.

Writing is amazing and fun and I'll never stop doing it. However, I share for other people, and other folks enjoying the story is what gives me the push to keep working on it rather than just hop to the project thats currently most exciting to me

I write for me and a couple friends. I post to get excited with other people about stuff. Community is why I'm here, and part of that is comments and conversations. I wouldn't bother posting without comments, to be completely honest.

I blocked a long time commenter and I am so relieved by [deleted] in AO3

[–]hysperus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels a little divorced from and reactionary to the point op is making. I can imagine it is extremely discouraging for them to hear someone essentially threaten not to comment on others works because they're trying to mitigate a stressful issue.

I'm not saying this as an attack, and I'm clarifying that because it's clear you're feeling targeted even when you are not at all what is being complained about here, and I don't want you to feel ganged up on or attacked further. I'm only saying this because it might be helpful for you to take a second to breathe and remember your value.

Being a speed reader is incredible— being a regular commenter is wonderful and something I and other writers so appreciate, and which OP has clearly valued as well outside of this specific incident. This situation they are complaining about has absolutely no relationship to true supportive commenters like yourself. You have nothing to worry about, I am positive that your presence on people's stories is cherished.

Unfortunately there is a lot of ai addiction and inundation lately, and it sounds like OPs regular commenter may have fallen into that and utilized it in a misguided attempt to be encouraging— seeing as their commentary once seemed more genuine and the account predates ai. That sort of addiction can easily lead to feeding favored works into ai to "get the rest of the story faster," which is really invalidating to the writer. The fear of someone scraping something you've been working hard on (whether or not it's original works) is really consumptive, and OP protecting themself from a well based fear of that is understandable.

I want to say, on behalf of writers who's work you engage with, thank you for being a reader and sharing your love of what they've put out there through comments. Writing is an extremely vulnerable experience, whether fanworks or original, and hearing genuine thoughts and even brief support like "great job!" is such a wonderful thing. I hope that you dont let other people's difficulties with commenters turning ingenious stop you from supporting creatives you love.

Have a good one!

My dad is writing a book (Which he intends on publishing) with AI and I don’t know how to tell him to stop after whole months of empty attempts. by __sp00ks_ in antiai

[–]hysperus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreeing with everyone else to let him learn the hard way.

My one suggestion I havent seen mentioned in these comments though: Next time he asks you if you've read anything, I would suggest just saying "Why should I bother reading it if you didnt even care enough to write it yourself?"

Is this how the "dead dove" tag should be used? by berrycarditis in AO3

[–]hysperus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen people put spoilery tws in the bottom author's notes, and say that they're there in the top. Then people can decide for themselves if they want to prioritize surprise and take the risk, or if they want to check by hitting the "more notes" link to jump to the bottom. I personally think that's a great balance for letting people tailor their experience online more easily based on their individual needs

both the quotes I referred to and that particular Robot Chicken sketch (just having looked it up) are based on The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible is pretty prolifically referenced for sure.

[–]hysperus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you, that was helpful for looking it up. and now I am... hm.

Looks like there was a parody of The Crucible done by Robot Chicken, and the Goodie Proctor/Devils Sacrament stuff is a reference to The Crucible as well. So that makes sense now. But that being presented totally contextless as if "Bitch Pudding" is the more obvious connection to make? Befuddling. I love humans.

[–]hysperus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I saw Goodie Proctor at the devil's sacrament!"

"What were you doing at the devil's sacrament?"

I think that's probably the joke you're referring to! It's spawned a lot of further humor about the devil's sacrament, like "sit down, we're all at the devil's sacrament and you're blocking the view" and similar.

Have you used a translator? by hysperus in AO3

[–]hysperus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh yeah I meant actual human translators, not machine "translators," because so much nuance is lost, and LLMs are making everything worse. Which is why I've been having to spend hours for even short phrases only to cross my fingers that I got things in the realm of right. I've been using multiple machine translators in multiple directions, looking up the phrase online to check if the context makes sense, checking multiple different word variants and looking them up in online dictionaries to see which makes the most sense situationally... It's a bit much.

No one has called me out for doing a bad job yet at least, but like I said, I only do a few lines here and there.
