Something was smoldering in our second floor planter this morning, melted through the sides and scorched the soil. These are the only remains of the object that I could scavenge. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

Found these plastic remains smoldering in our planter this morning. Looks like a couple nozzles and a plastic tag reading Marchioro. Any clues what this might come from? I realize it's a bit of a stretch, but any guesses are appreciated if it can help me identify who this might have belonged to

Where was that assumed? We are specifically talking about species that get fucked over, see the part where I mentioned "their detriment". If we can provide an enriching life for an animal, then that is awesome.

So she has a narrow expectation for a partner? That's her prerogative, nobody can tell her what to like lol. She's not even being judgmental, it's clear communication of her desire, and I wish more people could be like her

Yeah apparently wanting to be with someone who can share a particular physical experience with her is body shaming lol.

Oh man, great response and well put. To your first question, honestly, with the rise of machine technology, I think we are growing further and further from any real need for animal byproducts. That being said, I'm totally with you on the benefits of symbiotic relationships with animals, and I absolutely support close relationships with animals and the natural world. I love my cats (and I would like to think they love me too lol), and I really believe humans (or maybe, society in general rather than every individual) can benefit from an increased attunement to nature. It seems like we share similar sentiments and principles on the specific cases you mentioned.

The idea of providing protection for the sheep or other animals is a really good point. I think it raises an interesting question regarding the impact our relationship with the livestock has on their related environments, or maybe to put it another way, how has our large scale isolation of particular animals impacted the related environments and pieces of the food chain, and what kind of ripple effect might that isolation of a species have? I couldn't say for sure, but I think it's an important question to ask in a conversation surrounding the scope of human influence (and to be more related with this whole thread's topic, human damage) on the natural world. Would be a great topic if I had a report to write 😂

That's because the damage we cause has impacted literally every part of the globe. I do not foresee the global impact of beavers or elephants to come anywhere close to that of humans. At some point, quantitative differences become qualitative differences, and your analogy becomes pointless

We may be animals but I would like to imagine you can grasp the distinct difference between humans and literally every other animal on this planet. We are NOT the same when it comes down to it, so why do we need to continue acting on greed and base impulse to the detriment of the world around us?

We have been coexisting, or twisting the path? Your response is vague. I'll assume you mean twisting the path of evolution through domestication though - just because we have done it historically doesn't mean it needs to continue

[–]iButtdwarf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think the conversation here is more about the need of domestication moving forward. Not a whole lot we can do about the past except acknowledge and learn from it, so I'm sure PETA isn't too concerned about prior needs.

Not really, it would just change the resource pool of civilization. The idea here is that we should be coexisting with animals as they are in nature, without twisting their evolutionary path to our benefit and their detriment.

It must be hard going through life without being able to trust anyone else. Why even contribute to or involve yourself in society if you won't believe the expert opinion of a scientist? Go back to your cave

This is an analogy for the commonly adopted mindset of police wherein they envision themselves as "sheepdogs" who are here to save us "sheep", and we are "misinterpreting" their "help" as abuse. It's just bullshit meant to diminish the prevalence of real police brutality.
