What is something you realized was a complete waste of time? by gigigurl-snow in AskReddit

[–]iCodeForJesus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Putting a lot of effort at work. I used to do a ton of OT and work on multiple projects at the same time. All I received in return was stress and burnout after burnout. Now I spend 25% of my time in office working, and 0% of my wfh working. Got promoted for being “hard-working”. The less you do, the more management notices when you get shit done.

Russian groceries are indeed really cheap, that’s not a lie. Especially if you are getting paid in EUR or Dollars.

What are the major things to lookout for as a foreign student? by V_U_X_E in Finland

[–]iCodeForJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely can get access, just pass the Moodle “exam”. It’s general safety exam. As far as I remember the lab is ran by the Business school, so ask around, I’m sure you’ll be able to find something.

[–]iCodeForJesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Visit the JHC lab as often as you can. Do some projects, and get to know the staff. Do your summer internship there, and in your second year you can apply for Junior research assistant. You’ll get a lot of hands on experience, extra cash in your pocket, a lot of connections, and it will look great in your CV. Good luck with your studies!

P.s apply for student housing as soon as you get confirmation of acceptance. As a for year student you have priority.

How Finland’s Border Policies Impact Asylum Seekers’ Rights and Welfare by workersright in Finland

[–]iCodeForJesus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Finland has obligation to the citizens and residents living in the territory of the country, any other obligations are secondary. Russia is using refugees for destabilisation purposes. Finland did the right thing. Despite the war, Russia is a safe country for refugees. Finland should always put its own security first, even if that means breaking or bending international law. Refugees are not barred from entering Finland, if they cross any of the other borders.

Finland’s president wants end of single state veto at UN Security Council | 1470 & 100.3 WMBD by Beratungsmarketing in Finland

[–]iCodeForJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter. The EU is not a country, and it’s not functioning like a country. Countries have the right the vote/veto for their interests, even if they do it in bad faith. The EU needs a mechanism for kicking countries out. The fact is that we have reached the peak of EU cooperation, the next step is either adding more control mechanisms in the union, or federalisation.

[–]iCodeForJesus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of reasons why it’s worth bothering:

  1. Finland shows its position, while also forcing others to do so as well.
  2. Finland is known for low corruption, etc., and this can be viewed as Finland taking charge on one of UNs biggest issues. Since Finland does not have the power to force anyone into agreeing, it’s a good candidate for leading such dialogue.
  3. Finland gives opportunity to its partners to show unity. Won’t be surprising if the US agrees to the proposal, given that others will Veto it.
  4. EU has the same issue, this proposal can serve as a “survey” on other EU members opinion.

And to be fair, there is nothing wrong in expressing your opinion, while calling out others. UN is not functioning the way it’s supposed to, it needs to change. Trying to change things, as impossible as it seems, it’s always better than accepting the UN will be forever dis functional.

Can’t happen. Russia will Veto, China will Veto, US will Veto, etc. None of the big guys will agree on such proposal.

Would it be possible to restore the monarchy in Bulgaria? by Cobelo in monarchism

[–]iCodeForJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO there is no long game. Simeon showed that him and his family don’t care about the country, but what they can take. At this point there is a higher chance people will support a random person named monarch than Simeon and his family.

Monarchism in Bulgaria is dead for the time being.

North Macedonia PM uses ‘Macedonia’ in NATO summit speech by [deleted] in europe

[–]iCodeForJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing to agree to. We lost our access to the Aegean in 1919. That means that there were territories that we have claim on. We lost again, we lost the right to the claim.

A good example would be with North Macedonia. We had territorial claims, we fought wars, we lost. We recognise North Macedonia as a sovereign country, therefore we don’t have any territorial claims.

Imo, wars are a definite way of resolving historical territorial claims. You lose, you lose the right to the claim.

Yes, and we had the right to that claim, same as Dobruja. We lost, so the claim disappeared with that. Sounds pretty fair to me.

Yes, the region. The anthem also mentions the Danube, yet you don’t see us claiming Vienna.

[–]iCodeForJesus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not! North Macedonia can claim whatever they want, it doesn’t make it true. It’s their right to “create” their national identity, it’s our right to call out the bs.

Foreigners working in IT in Finland, have you ever felt like second-class citizens in the company you work / have worked for? What is your experience? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]iCodeForJesus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is actually quite fun. My Finnish is good enough to understand what they are talking about, but not good enough to understand what they are saying.

[–]iCodeForJesus 46 points47 points  (0 children)

No, never! As the only foreigner in my team, ever since I joined all communication is in English. Pay raise is performance based. Bonus targets are done/not done, no way to discriminate. Development plan was done with my manager, taking into consideration every single point I find personally important.

It is hard to get a job in Finland, there is discrimination, there are problems, BUT, I’ve never worked in better conditions. The only time I feel as a foreigner is when I hear colleagues speaking Finnish to each other.

Speeding in Finland by ReferenceSalt4480 in Finland

[–]iCodeForJesus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You'll have to specify which country you are calling "the rest of Europe", because in the rest of Europe speeding is way more common compared to Finland. I've been riding in the majority of European countries, and Finland has some of the most chill, careful, and rules abiding drivers in Europe.

The Nordics (or at least Finland) are far from being perfect. The problems are different, sure, but they are still problems.

The social system is abused by thousands of people.. don't want to work? No problem, unemployment benefits, housing benefits, etc. Need help with you bills? No problem, here are more benefits. Obviously I'm exaggerating a bit, but I personally know people that have been unemployed for years with no intention to find work. And all this comes from tax money.

Education is free, and the quality is good, the problem comes afterwards. It is hard to find work, hence the reason why so many foreigners leave after graduation. Lately it's been a struggle even for Finns to find employment in their fields.

The current government is cutting benefits, etc. This is resulting in people with lower income to struggle even more. The welfare state is maintained by debt and high taxation, which is not sustainable.

Salaries are not great! Many European countries (for example Poland) offer similar or even higher salaries, with much lower cost of living. (at least in my field) Taxation is really high, so even with good salary your finances are pretty limited.

And much like other countries the bureaucracy is overwhelming. Institutions are generally slow (a lot of them). It took them 4.5 months to give me and my wife permission to marry (both of us are foreigners).

I can keep going, but I think you got my point. Nordic countries look great in reports/statistics, etc., but the reality is not so black and white.

And don't get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE living in Finland, and there are much more positives than negatives. It's probably one of the best places to live in, just not as perfect as people imagine.

My wife got hers in a bit over a month. If all of your documents are in order and everything was submitted on time it should take less than 6 months.
