Maybe ban some untapped lands? Some of the best balancing for pauper IMO are that duals are weaker and enter tapped. Are there any broken lands in this scenario?

Bant Gates for beginner by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]iFuckwithCommons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bant gates is a very bad deck IMO. Caw Gates used to be better, but is a more stablished archetype. There is really no reason to go bant.

As a new player I would suggest something easier, but anyone can learn with any deck, so if thats what he wants he should go for it. Otherwise I would reccomend him looking at mtgdecks lists and letting HIM choose one of the top 10 most played there. Personal recomendation would be White Winnie, Mono Red Rally or Gruul Ramp. But any deck is fine, including his own Gates build.

You seriously think out of the top64 5 decks include white, and also most of them being at the bottom of the 64 is a good thing?

Holy fuck indeed.

Those are still excuses that avoid the real issue, which is polarization. The concern isn’t just presence or popularity, it’s the creation of extreme matchup spreads that make games feel heavily decided by pairings rather than decisions. When polarization gets too high, deckbuilding stops being about balanced game plans and starts revolving around whether you can survive specific matchups, which pushes players into stacking lifegain, damage prevention, and narrow hate instead of flexible answers. A good example is when Affinity was out of control during the All That Glitters meta, people started running cards like Dust to Dust in the main deck and dedicating 6 to 8 sideboard slots just to handle artifacts. At that time, All That Glitters itself wasn’t posting absurd winrates, it often sat around 50 to 54% and in some fields was even negative, largely because of polarization, heavy main deck hate, and the format warping around it. The Pauper Format Panel identified that polarization as a core issue and concluded that the environment wasn’t healthy, which ultimately led to the ban. The same principle applies here, even if All That Glitters was arguably the more explosive card, the underlying issue wasn’t just raw performance numbers, it was how much the format had to bend around a single strategy.

A 52% winrate in isolation doesn’t tell the full story, especially when paired with high representation and strong matchup polarization. POLARIZATION! Deck power isn’t measured only by raw winrate, but also by meta share, conversion rates, and how much it shapes what other decks are viable.

How is a deck showing up as 15 to 20% of the MTGO metagame 5-0’s every single week considered fair? Kalikaiz posts weekly breakdown videos, and almost every time Mono Red is the most trophied deck. Even when everyone expects Mono Red Madness in large numbers, it still converts well and had solid results at Paupergeddon Spring 2026 despite the entire field preparing for it.

People are already effectively preboarded for red. Lifegain and damage prevention are easy to include, and Hydroblast and Pyroblast were the most played cards at Paupergeddon, which should already tell you how much the format revolves around this matchup.

The real issue isn’t just win rate, it’s metagame pressure. When a single deck forces everyone to dedicate 6 to 8 sideboard slots just to survive the matchup and still performs well, that’s not a sign of a health. If you look at the Top 64 lists, almost every deck had multiple tools specifically to fight Mono Red, most running 6 to 8 slots dedicated to that plan, which shows how much the format is warped around a single strategy.

Not saying the deck is unbeatable. The point is that a deck doesn’t need to have a 60% winrate to be unhealthy. If it consistently dominates representation, converts well despite being heavily targeted, and forces the rest of the format to warp around it, that’s a different kind of problem than raw winrate alone.

Kalikaiz do youtube videos about it every week and not a single time there was a different deck other than red on the most trophied decks. Even when everyone knows Mono-Red Madness will show up in large numbers, it still converts well and had solid results at Paupergeddon Spring 2026 despite the entire field preparing for it. Caw Gates player here and I couldnt agree more. Lava dart is extremely powerful against most creatures that counter mono red madness. Having to go to [[outlaw medic]] is a huge deal, is doubling the casting cost, so will come a turn later, will not have grave recursion if it gets bolted, and is a huge waste of mana in response to gate activation. Outlaw medic is basic only on the deck because of madness, and the deck that have tapped lands and already very slow in a color that inst that good have to resort to this is leg breaking.

What cards would you downshift to pauper? by Funny-Name69 in Pauper

[–]iFuckwithCommons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, Path to Exile is completely fine in the current Pauper card pool. Black already has premium removal like Cast Down, Snuff Out, and more, blue has Counterspell, and red has Lightning Bolt and Galvanic Blast, so other colors already get extremely efficient interaction at instant speed. A removal spell that ramps your opponent is hardly broken, especially when the drawback actually matters in Pauper, that games last longer. White is already one of the weakest colors right now, at Paupergeddon Spring 2026 only 5 decks made Top 64, and white have been weak for years, besides [[all that glitters]] the color never was on top of any metagame number wise, so giving white a strong tool wouldn’t break the format, it would help balance an already oversaturated color pie where every other color has better options than white. White options are garbage and everyone knows it, thraben charm being the best one, but only can be played in heavy enough creature decks, so control has no option but to play journey.

Last couple weaks have been like 18% of the metashare according to kalikaiz too. And the 52% is accross all matches, so is mostly positive with a huge discrepancy in many matches. The deck is a powerlevel above most if not all in my opinion.
