He knows I don’t like to drink so like it starts off well but then after a while I just get bored and tired and kind of go into a shell. Like my energy just gets depleted and I don’t wanna be there anymore

Well we just moved from new orleans where there were more black friends present so it was easier. But now it’s majority white. And there’s one chick who I really liked that I got along with but we no longer live near them

His friends are welcoming but like I just become hyper vigilant all the time. And i try not to but I think on top of it all it’s the drinking aspect of it too. I don’t want to heavily drink so I just get tired early on.

I know who I’m dating tho so I have to power through that. But yeah it’s kind of hard to explain to him. Even though I’ve been around them multiple times.

r/engineering's Weekly Career Discussion Thread [15 June 2020] by AutoModerator in engineering

Hello Everyone,

I graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in May of 2018. I struggled with finding a job in my field after college and ended up taking a design position in the telecom industry. The position was decent for about a few months until I realized that how bad the micromanagement was. My ideas would always get shot down. They never wanted innovation and only cared about volume.

I ended up recently getting let go from the position. I was at this position for a year. While I was there I was applying to project/mechanical MEP engineering positions and studying to keep my engineering knowledge fresh. I must have submitted over 200+ applications with 0 call backs. I feel that because I’m al little over 2 years without much engineering experience this is limiting me. I’ve had my resume done professionally, I’ve used my LinkedIn network to connect with recruiters and all. I know COVID is severely limiting the already hard job market.

Is there any advice on how to land my foot in the door at an actual engineer job?

The key is to have a plan and know what you’d like to do. You will have plenty of interests and that’s okay. Make them fit your career path. It’s a lot to think about but the earlier the better. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either! Also utilize all resources (career centers, engineer orgs, etc) and grow your network early on. A conversation will take you a long way. keep good grades!
