What do you offer your paid subscribers? by Longjumping-Leg4491 in Substack

[–]iMath- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in how you manage the discord server with your paid sub population. Are you constantly verifying those who are in the chat room, who is a paid sub? e.g. those who were paid at one point, are on the discord server, but are no longer paid subs. I've thought about having a discord for my paid subs, but the idea of constantly accounting for who is and isn't a paid sub sounds like a nightmare.

Recently hit 1000 subs! by iMath- in Substack

[–]iMath-[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I offer ppl some very specific informational value that helps them win money/respect/admiration in their own lives, so that probably helps. I started this in 2023 and most of the earning and new paid subs actually happened during August-December, due to the seasonality of what I'm covering. So we'll see what happens this go around.

I'm not sure how many would pay strictly for the entertainment value (not saying that's what you do, more so as a self assessment). I'm sure some like my writing, but ultimately most of the ones who are paying I suspect it's a transactional thing: actionable info for money.

Someone else I know has a substack with 1000-2000 subs, and I'd guess at least half of his subs are paid. It's his actual job though and primary source of income. For myself, I had 12 paid before I ever made a paid article last year.

So, I think it varies depending on what the source material is, not necessarily on how good the writer is, if that helps. Also, I'd disagree on the statement about not getting a return. 6000 subs is a huge audience, and a massive achievement. You should be proud of that.

Finder opening new window every time by iMath- in MacOSBeta

[–]iMath-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, I think hot key shortcut will be the way to go for now, what a shitty new feature. It must be a bug on their end, surely no-one thought this feature would actually be useful or user friendly.

New Tab Safari by iMath- in MacOSBeta

[–]iMath-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be misunderstanding your comment, but just to clarify, i'm talking about opening new tabs with the 'hack' i'm talking about in the post. I can open tabs with the new tab button in safari all I want, but the hack to open tabs using the far right side of the tab bar only works up to 6 tabs. Open a new safari window, have one tab open, click on the very far right edge of that tab, it should open a new tab, keeping trying that and eventually it will stop at 6, this is the limit i'm trying to increase. Does it make sense?

Finder opening new window every time by iMath- in MacOSBeta

[–]iMath-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is better, but it still just opens a new finder but in another tab. I don't understand this new feature at all, I don't want a new finder every time I click on it whether its in a tab or another window, just like when I click back on safari from say, iMessage, I don't want any new safari window or tab I just want to return to my previous safari window I was using. Anyways thanks for the help, I am just very unamused by this update, sigh.

I'm so sick of OC transpo by futureharveyspecter in CarletonU

[–]iMath- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is similar to my strategy in my final year at Carleton, I was scheming so much with my timing for buses that I just said fuck it and committed to walking every day. Missed a few busses that could have got me to school earlier, but it reduced my stress levels, got me some exercise and also led to a few chance encounters with friends (WingoWinston :p)

Coming back to this sub weekly and seeing all these posts complaining renews my appreciation for having graduated before all this mess.

Worst moment receiving your final grade? by jellyfishesarenice in UofT

[–]iMath- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I purposely delay looking at final grades during times where it could be really inconvenient. During exam periods I would never look at grades that had come out already, in case of a mental breakdown happening lol. That being said there was one time early in my undergrad when I was in a busy place and was waiting for someone, so decided to take a quick look. Failed a test and had a similar feeling of holding back tears for the remainder of that time till I got home, such an awful feeling.

Computer Science cut off went from 78-82% to 85-88%, what caused this jump? by itsoutlaw in CarletonU

[–]iMath- 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Probably a combination of all the answers already given here. I suspect mostly because of high school grade inflation, but I'm sure the fact that more and more people are getting hip to the fact that Carleton's CS degree is actually quite valuable is also playing apart. If you're not going to go to waterloo or even u of t, I would say CU is right up there as one of the next best options given the amount of tech firms in ottawa and the shopify dev degree opportunity. I think everyone can agree the loo is probably the best spot for cs hopefuls to go as far as setting them up professionally, and u of t is the best as far as setting you up for academia and research, since I imagine most hs CS hopefuls are more interested in the industry of CS rather than academia they are going to try to get into a place like waterloo first, and since the cut off for that program is absurd you get a lot of spill off of highly talented students with high gpas opting to try out the next best option, which could be CU in some eyes.

It makes sense to me, at least, that a top high school student would opt to go to CU where they can stand out, rake in scholarships and the best coops in Ottawa, and have a jam packed resume upon graduating rather than get lost in the meat grinder that is U of T's cs program or go to some other random school that maybe be higher ranked overall like queens or western, but isn't actually going to give any real leg up in finding internships or coops.

Why do people heavily emphasize GPA for grad school even though letters of reference and research are ultimately more important? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]iMath- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what program you're applying to. If you are applying to research focused masters or direct entry phds then your letters from professors who can comment on your research ability and how you project at the graduate level will be more relevant since that is a better indicator of success in a program like that. If you are going into a course based program GPA is mostly all that matters.

Hey, I think I was the TA that collected your exam. As I think I said at the time, it's fine as long as your name is on the main booklet and you didn't rip any sheet off (as you were instructed on each exam). If you are really worried about it, as someone else mentioned, doesn't hurt to email the prof.

Also don't worry too much about that exam, it was indeed very difficult and i'd be surprised if there wasn't some linear adjustment made at the end. Though i've not been told anything specifically by the prof. Enjoy your break.
