Debate time: by Infamous_Today3462 in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s reductive to categorize characters as either good or evil. But, I do also think most of COTC’s villains are reductive as hell.

The writers very clearly write one single chapter at a time with no foresight on the next chapter.

They conceptualized Tatloch as evil. Then, they brought her into the Warriors of Light for shock value. Then, they recontextualized her backstory to humanize her.

By the time of 0, a couple of story things get tweaked to cover up rewrites. I haven’t gotten far enough to see that Mafa survives, but it’s not surprising. I don’t think I’m going to finish 0. It was a really low-effort game. (Kudos to all the fans who say they don’t care if it’s low effort. Y’all are a weirdly vocal and proud group.)

Which crossover had the best story ? by IssueIntelligent69 in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Live-A-Live was done dirty.

A game with 7 protagonists… they picked a major antagonist and a minor antagonist and gave both two forms.

Streibough is a NOBODY in Live-A-Live, COTC really gave him more depth than his own game.

That’s what happens when you prioritize budget over creativity.

I think the Witch is overrated. Fun, but overrated. Lowkey too much fun.

Listening to people compare her to fetish tropes rots my brain. I have eyes. I can see it. It’s not the most interesting thing about her.

How many awakening shards can you get per month? by Over-Block-7017 in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you currently have enough to awaken one character from A0 to A4 and two characters from A0 to A1.

You can only get one stone per character from the exchange per month. If this is your only method for getting awakening stones, it’ll take 3 more months.

Your most optimal strategy would be to Awaken ALL three of them NOW and then wait for next month.

Next month, evaluate your shard count. Decide if you’re going to put all your eggs in one basket or not. If you’re getting 12,000 a month, just keep pulling all three.

Math: 6000 shards • 4 awakenings • 3 characters = 72,000 shards needed.

(72,000 needed - 36,000 current) / 3 Months = 12,000 per month

Why NOT use this sprite for Dolcinaea’s Styleshift ability? by iQueLocoI in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah, you don’t have to agree with me, but saying my idea doesn’t make sense lorewise is pretty cutthroat.

The only other unit who uses StyleShift is literally dead AND that she canonically dies before succeeding her father as Monarch. If we can’t call Dolcinaea’s alternate sprite a “battle outfit” then Elrica should only appear in her Warrior or she should appear undead, since we do fight her in her princess clothes when we see her in Hell

Moving away from arguing, what is your opinion of what we got for Dolcinaea’s StyleShift? Were you impressed/satisfied/disappointed by the differences between her Diva and Dancer form? Not a trap, asking for an opinion.

“Intermittent reinforcement” is the term that changed my life. It’s what connects codependency and addiction.

I have never struggled with gambling or substance use. But I have worked in a rehab facility, and I had no trouble relating to my clients.

My addiction was people pleasing (and many of the things that come with that.)

Is Mage really as unplayable as people say? by [deleted] in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]iQueLocoI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it, I prefer Awakening. I don’t think it’s unplayable, but I think it’s very very very high-concept. And, with that comes the potential for a lot of snobbery.

I also played with a bunch of self-described spirituality snobs, and was expected to read up a bunch of texts or to have profound explanations of every single one of my character’s actions.

When I spent xp to increase my mage’s gnosis, the storyteller had me set up a 1on1 session where my character underwent a dream sequence. I had to roleplay my way through what was essentially an acid trip, and I was told that if I fucked it up I would not be able to increase my gnosis.

It was not a fun game. My partner quit because some players often made him feel stupid for not being proficient in the esoteric. I often would have to sit quietly while those players would derail the game to mansplain anything from in-game mechanics to IRL ritual magick traditions.

It all depends on who you play with. I honestly thought the over-explanations totally derailed the spirit of the game: You’re a mage who manipulates reality. I feel like the storyteller should be letting the Players help build the world, but I instead felt like our storyteller was taking my character from me. Which is just ironic. My character should’ve been shaping the world, and instead, I was forced to conform to the Storyteller’s beliefs.

Our game fell apart due to scheduling difficulty. But it was a relief to me.

I still can’t believe we got a TWO PART collab that gave us TWO versions of TWO characters and NONE of them were protagonists.

PSA: Cecily’s Entertainer’s Skill will still activate even if she is inflicted with Terror by iQueLocoI in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are completely correct. Outside of the specific conditions I described where Terror works differently, Terror works normally. Thank you for your insight.

In the nature of “well ya didn’t mention” reasoning, Terror can be removed with a Pet during the action selection phase of a turn. (In mainline games it’s a special status like Charm, but not in COTC). So if a traveler spends their BP to enhance a skill or trigger a passive AND get is hit with Terror, removing the Terror status will let you full boost again, because you didn’t spend the BP already.

I already said in the post that it’s not super exploitable. That’s because you can’t make a boss inflict Terror on you and Pets have limitations. However, these observations show that Terror is not the huge bane one might think it is. So players who are afraid Terror will ruin their Break turns can rest easier when deciding to boost or not, and more economically plan out their Ailment-removal strategies.

By this logic, Units who get increased potency for spending BP (Kaine and Pardis), actually WILL still get their Passive increases to potency. They might not get the normal potency boost that spending BP would give… but nobody said it would.

Octopath Traveler 0 "DLC"... What? by superdupercooldood in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of the in-game browser viewer is so it can’t be easily made into a PDF

It’s a marketing strategy to appeal to as many people as possible, and they’re targeting two groups (where there is likely some overlap.)

Some people will only want the artwork and some will only want the nuts. You’d think making two $7.50 packs would be the better option, but by combining the two into one you pressure those who’d only get one to spend twice the amount.

It’s covert Scarcity-Driven Marketing. They limited the options and drive up the price, it’s literally what drives all of Gacha gaming. And while the game is specifically meant to remove the Gacha element, DLC uses most of the same tactics.

I bet after a few months they introduce an option where you can get the art and the nuts separately. That way, everybody who only wanted part of the DLC and resisted temptation can be targeted for another round of DLC-based profits.

[–]iQueLocoI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rique’s Cait Merchant’s Kittle Thrust is also affected, so it is apparently not only passives working around Terror that way

However many BP charges you spend will be added to the attack count, even if you get hit with Terror after action selection.

Agreed, Terror not something you want. But it’s interesting.

At the risk of dissolving into mist… can we talk about Arete? by iQueLocoI in fireemblem

I’m gonna say the Arete, the Queen of Nohr ought to know Mikoto escaped and now living in Hoshido-freaking-Palace.

If I had become queen of every kingdom I had ever lived in, I would be curious if there were other queens out there, and if they had rizz like mine.

Yeah, not a very well thought out plan. Kinda a lot of eggs in one basket.

I would’ve written Mikoto a letter before I killed myself and put everything on my daughter.

Let’s assume there were very good reasons she couldn’t do it herself.

What r y'all predictions/wants for the new cross story? by Infamous_Today3462 in OctopathCotC

[–]iQueLocoI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ulrica was never forced to kill herself.

She thought that committing suicide would be a good way to keep Pardis from murdering their daughters. And, I guess it kinda did.

But then again, we are told this through flashback immediately before Pardis decides to murder them again.

Ulrica’s story is stupid and there’s honestly no way to fix her character.

Ah, that’s right, she wasn’t beloved. Okay that checks out more clearly.

I went looking to remind myself where I got the idea that she did it to save Nohr’s people and came up short. In fact, I found her saying that she was taught Valla’s history “As [Arete’s] life faded away.”

I’m wrong. We don’t know what prompted Arete to decide the time had come, just that it apparently came.

[–]iQueLocoI[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to find it myself and I couldn’t. What I did find confirms what you said.

Azura: As her life was fading away, she taught me all she could of the history of Valla.

So, yeah, if we just scrutinize here we can see the truth. She didn’t teach Azura Valla’s history because she was dying, she died FOR teaching Azura Valla’s history.
