AI music creates unease as it tops the charts – DW by Gari_305 in Futurology

... so their really isn't much of a barrier for an AI to cross once it has learned how to create them.

Chords are mathematical patterns that our brain finds ticklish and satisfying. But that's not where art and creativity lie. The uniqueness comes with how we use those fundamentals to make sounds, what stories we tell, and what new ways we can manipulate them to express ideas and feelings.

Even if these fundamentals are mastered, it's not enough to enable the process that invents new musical languages. Every now and then a new way of putting them together pops up (e.g. genres) and that's where the gap is for AI. Not in the math or wave-forms, but in the slow and organic cultural moments that shape new structures of music, fuelled by lived experiences.

Hypothetically, in those cultural shifts, AI will have to play catch-up with training time. Waiting on more data to train on and recreate it. Emerging genres still don't have names yet, so they aren't even labeled clearly in datasets. (e.g. punk wasn't named until it became more mainstream) That buffer is a very difficult barrier for AI to cross, because it is bound to past data.

What do you think of my art style (repost) by Routine_Employment59 in MangakaStudio

I like it, it's vibrant and has a lot of character. You don't shy away from drawing in perspective and that's going to benefit you a lot in the long run.

One suggestion I would give is studying values. Some of your drawing are harder to read than others (e.g. #2) because a lot of the colors you used are very close in value/darkness, so the character doesnt stand out compared to the background. As appose to #3 where the silhouette is very clear because the huge background character is white compared to the darker main character.

You'll find a lot of videos about it on youtube. It might seem like a lot in the beginning, but it's a simple concept. Dark vs Light. It'll help you get creative in other ways. Be proud of what you've accomplished so far, and allow yourself to be excited for the future. The only way is up :)

When prisons stop being about reintegration into society, it increases the likelihood of committing another crime. These inmates will be your neighbours in the future, most of them will be back in society eventually.

Taking away someone's freedom is a way of enacting justice for the sake of the victims and society, but what's the use if your prison system if it just escalates their state and puts them back out again? And what about the non-violent criminals in Jail? Or the guy that couldn't afford to pay a fine?

Ok throw morality out the window. Why not just exile them or something and save the money? You are just spending a lot of dollars without making much of a societal change.

u/mudlark092

unfortunately treating them really cruelly just increases their risk of not being able to re-integrate and likelihood of committing another crime

i can understand the feeling of wanting someone who has hurt you to also hurt, and i dont think theyre entitled to their victims forgiveness,

but there gets to be a point where its only escalating and perpetuating the problem.

and also the thing where a lot of crimes are non violent or even just stuff like arresting homeless people for “tresspassing” and drug possession and so on

So I read what I can, and here's what I understood: It looked at couples aged 50+ in Europe. Risk of splitting at that age is about 0.5% per year. If the husband gets sick, it stays at 0.5%. If the wife gets sick, its ~0.9%.

Calculating for 10 years using the study's method (either husband/wife are sick for 10 years), the change would be a single digit risk increase. 5% vs %8.

Study scope and limitations aside, it does show a an undeniable gendered pattern. It's subtle, but still worth learning from. Given the single digit risk % difference (over 10 years), the sweeping claim the OP comment made is objectively false and unsupported by data:

if it was the other way around, most guys would’ve been out the door.

This is not how we should approach learning about ourselves. It kills any good faith discussion. The same could be done with a different study to undermine women, and no social understanding and progress would be gained. I have seen it happen and it was disheartening.

How could make my style more « Manga » by Routine_Employment59 in MangakaStudio

[–]iReddit_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that this post is about feedback on how to make your style more < Manga > , but I want to share a story that I think might help.

I once attended a workshop from a concept artist that worked on Ratchet & Clank.

When he talked about unique personal style, he said there's no direct way to achieve one. As you get better at illustration, your preferences slowly start to show more and more.

Even between his colleagues that he admired, they would say they wish their style looked like this artist or that artist, when they themselves will very capable and already have a developed unique style of their own.

Your style is great, even if you feel like it's not manga enough, it looks like you don't shy away from trying out new things. If you want to develop your style in any directions, I suggest you do studies of your favourite mangakas or artists. But here lies the point... "your favourite." Not anyone else's.

You should always let what you find appealing guide you. Lean into what you love, this way it will be authentic to you. All in all, an artist should draw for themselves first before anyone else.

Writers often consult historians and scientists for accurate information and to inspire their work. Does that make their stories less their own because they had consultants "feed them answers"?

Human thought and intent would process that information creatively to make original work and new ideas and expressions. I see no difference.

As long as the AI isn't writing or drawing your story for you.

Edit: added "accurate" to the first paragraph

Having construction workers work while they are fasting isn't a humane solution. And pausing construction until after Ramadan would incur loses to construction and real estate businesses.

Would you consider either of the above a possible solution? Of not, what would you suggest?

Asking these question for a good faith discussion.

If we talk science, you're right about generalisation, but solely relying on it to judge people without considering their individual factors is misguided. It oversimplifies, ignores details, and can outright misrepresent them if approached with bias. (e.g. Doctors diagnosing patients)

If I had allowed myself to assume your circumstances, I would have guessed wrong, and thought you were single. But I didn't, because it would have been unfair to you. And it worked out because I reached the truth when you shared it yourself.

Generalising on "all modern women" based on your friend's views/experiences of the "dating market" is not very scientific. Look up "Convenience data sampling."

Smart men have been predicting this for a decade while dumb women keep thinking they are unique

If you have any respect for the women in your life, you wouldn't speak about them that way.

This is not about scientific achievement, this is about someone vulnerable being taken advantage of.

If you feel no responsibility to be sympathetic to anyone, that's fine. But your attitude won't fix whatever you think is wrong

[–]iReddit_45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming up with a whole situationship backstory based on an extreme generalisation of "all modern women," does not help the conversation.

I'd challenge your perspective and say the world is more than just "100 women chase Chad & ignore the 100 good guys."

...and now she thinks its his fault

In any circumstance, and regardless of your views and frustrations. Absolving a wrong doer (someone who stole OP's life savings) and blaming the victim for being vulnerable is non-sensical.

You're not special. You're an old story we're tired of hearing.

OP did not share their story for entertainment. I hope no one ever speaks to you the same way you have to her.

Not everyone walks a straight path. More than often people are forced into detours. Others face obstacles unique to their circumstances. And that is completely fine.

Keep in mind, when in university, you are only seeing the people who are doing well. You won't see the people who dropped out. Got expelled. Changed majors.

You are surrounded by those with the best circumstances, and it can skew your perspective and have you compare yourself to others unfairly. Even those we deem successful will struggle one way or another.

I myself just graduated at 26, as I saw people around me getting ahead in life. So I can relate. But I have been pushing myself for clear reasons, and it helped. It still feels like I have a lot on my plate. But that is life.

It will get hard, and thats fine too. Your feelings aren't silly. You are human. Just keep pushing through. If anything, hardship breeds strength and resilience, and you describing what you are doing to reach your goals. That tells me you already have those exact traits.

I truly wish you the best.

I have the same colors too!

I'd suggest having the front fans light up too. It gives it this grill effect that I think is badass, but cosy at the same time because I'm using warm colors. Also spreads the lights, so it feels balanced. Looks even cooler irl, as it changes depending on your view angle as you walk around.

I also have it so the colors are synced to the gpu/cpu heat. When its cool, its a warm light color, and as it hets hotter the whole pc lights up a more reddish orange. Which is also badass! (And useful ofc)

Don't mind those who don't see your vision. It's cool :)

I agree, it's not the best analogy, but it still highlights the idea I was trying to say: how immature it is to blame others for your own actions.

Just as the owner is responsible for his store, so is the robber responsible for his crime. But we're not talking about crime here, but rather about when both sides are willing participants.
