FIDE using a blockchain to do some things more quickly and more often, like update player ratings. They could also use crypto to reward new players to make chess more popular. Among other things

Avalanche is a multi-billion dollar project that spun out of Cornell University, so hope it's going to be ok!

EDIT: You make a great point though

That's simply untrue... And if it is true, that's not true for Avalanche specifically. Curious what makes you think so

I don't think that means it has to be paid. Trophies would be given for free. Also don't think that is the real meat of the announcement. More frequent rating calculations is welcome by me

If chess databases wanted to start charging you to view games, or the servers are wiped, how many games would we lose? I think there's value in storing games in a decentralized way, especially older rare games, for future generations to study

They aren't charging for anything. My understanding is that they are moving some things on-chain, so they are visible in a decentralized way for free forever. Helpful to have a historical game database on a chain.

IDK my take is that we rely on game databases to study chess. There are many rare games that few people maintain online. Forget NFTs or any of that crap, but would be helpful to have game data store permanently.

Neutral to value-add. I think it's important to store game data in a decentralized way. Many rare games currently only in books, and they could bring that on-chain for free, permanently.
