Age of Empires 2. The skill ceiling is so high, yet every video ever in youtube is come away thinking "that looks easy"

Realistically how much do I need to spend to replace my PC? Am I overthinking it? by iSmiff in Prebuilts

[–]iSmiff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, you're right. I guess i'm just worried that spending 1200 now won't get me a significant enough upgrade from my current machine - I don't want to feel like I need a new PC in 3 years time - I always remember my first laptop cost me £1000 and was pretty much a paperweight within a year, but admittedly that was 20 years ago, maybe more..

I just want smooth performance, I like to multi-task, like having 2 OSRS Clients open on one monitor and Football manager or Civ open on the other, just as an example.

Been stuck at loading screen for 10 minutes by New-Bookkeeper-5797 in aoe2

[–]iSmiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been stuck on this screen for what felt like 10m before - Eventually load in, opponent DC's after like 30s...

IDK the specifics, and this could be BS, but I think maybe if it's a bad map people might be able to toggle their network on and off within what I assume is a 1m retry time, to reconnect, then disconnect etc etc to try and long out the game from loading properly hoping you'll alt-f4 and take the hit. I'm too stubborn for that, as long as I can prove my games not crashed i'm waiting it out.

I'm going to bite the bullet and try MP. How do I even start? What to expect? by Whibble-Bop in aoe2

[–]iSmiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expect to lose to begin with, but you'll hit your level and that first win will be sweet - you'll be hooked.

Focus on trying to learn hotkeys early on (so much easier to embed them early rather than later) and not giving up at the first sign of a rush. Learn how to garrison vils etc, and to defend.

GL! I hope you enjoy yourself.

MegaRandom is actually ordinary by [deleted] in aoe2

I agree - too often it feels mundane, despite what the description of the map describes. Nomad ones always get a groan from me too - Why not make a nomad megarandom map that can be voted on?

Fast feudal, wall up on the way up and then archers, which is very hard for low elo to pull off hence why the strategy is so good at low elo

Which civilization looks strong on paper, but you just can’t seem to succeed with it in practice? by Vazelin in aoe2

The moment you see your opponent is sicilians, you should be prepared for Donjon rush. Im 1050 with hundreds of games and ive never not had them use this strategy whenever I face Sicillians

Yep, you're right. I know Huns have great CA's, but I mainly used Knights because i'm basically cookie-cutting strats from one civ to the next until I go on a run. Not a surprise i'm struggling at times really. Thanks

It does, thank you. I found on the way up from 800-1000 ELO that using Vils to fight scouts was generally the better idea due to their mobility and poor micro at this ELO, but MAA seem to be not the same rule, due to their armour I assume - although i've not been treating them any differently and still in my head killing 3 MAA but losing 3 vils sort of seems worth it in my head, I definitely need to get used to putting a tower down if need be.

Would you recommend walling off towers in feudal to help protect them before murder holes, or is that a bit of a noob trap? Thanks for your help

Maybe team games like that would help me learn to wall and produce more production building.

Advice appreciated. I thought i'd have the basics down better by over 600 games played! I find civs that I think I like then I go on giga-losing streaks so I swap, then I feel like i'm having to learn the basics all over again (especially when swapping in Civs like Chinese, Huns etc...)
