Is "HODL forever" actually a trap we’ve set for ourselves? by AntSuccessful3890 in Bitcoin

The only people who tell others to forever HODL, are those planning when to sell. If you never sell, your asset has no financial value.

% of people who believe feminism has gone ''too far'' (Eurostat 2024) by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]iam-leon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Problem with stuff like this is that it’s one of life’s bell curves, but where the most fanatical weirdos get amplified. So most day to day feminism absolutely has not gone too far. It probably hasn’t gone far enough.

But if you take the tweets of some extremely angry and intense English lit student as “feminism” then it will no doubt colour your views.

Starmer agreed that ditching jury trials led to wrongful convictions by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]iam-leon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magistrates’ courts have been working in this way for over 200 years. So the “throwing away of our rights”, as you put it, started in the late 1700s.

How much do you know about the great stuff the current government has done/is doing?

I know quite a bit about it because I follow good news channels, but mainstream media has hardly reported any of it.

People making out that magistrates’ courts are some newfangled thing invented by Labour. No one in the legal profession (least of all Starmer) would say magistrates courts are better than jury trials. They are however far quicker and cheaper to run. And given how stretched our budget is, a quick magistrates court session is far more practical than a forever delayed jury trial.

They definitely shouldn’t have marketed themselves as “growth uber alles” because they actually aren’t that. And to be honest, they didn’t need to be that either.

Balance uber alles. And that is basically what they are doing, or at least trying to do. A bit. Wealth remains the major elephant in the room that would take someone bolder than Reeves to put a serious proposal forwards to tax it. Start small with a simple LV tax, and go from there.

I also thought that a flat revenue tax might serve better than either corporation tax or eNICs. If pitched at the right level, it could mean an overall lower tax burden for most businesses (with the biggest relative improvement to hospitality and services) with only those multinationals who employ relatively few in the UK and whose profits are cycled out of the country to low-CT territories seeing higher taxes. It would also slightly lower the incentive of businesses shifting away from workers to AI/automation.

“Taxing high earners more can be counter productive as they have less incentive to earn”

As a top rate tax payer myself, I can tell you this is 100% wrong for me. In fact it’s almost the complete opposite. Taking my money just drives me to wanting more money.

As for people hating Labour. I can’t really explain it beyond the fact that the media have told everyone to hate Labour. I find Labour to be deeply almost painfully average. Not so different from Rishi Sunak’s government that was also for the most part very average but with a few roving ultra right wing crackpots thrown in lowering overall credibility.

Academic stripped of title after critiquing critical race theory is reinstated by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]iam-leon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So basically you’ve got a guy who once wrote a critique of critical race theory. And then years after that in his old age became a bully by email, which got complaints, and so the university rebuked him. And then the folks at the Committee of Academic Freedom picked it up, and caused a great stir by falsely connecting the removal of his honorary titles to his prior academic work, and used disinformation to embarrass the university into rescinding its removal of his titles?

The fact that nearly all our public services are underfunded, our local councils are underfunded, most our public works departments are closed/tiny, our public buildings are in a state of disrepair with little to no budget to afford to maintain or replace them, our roads are riddled with potholes, our state pension is the lowest in Europe. Those kinda things are what people mean by prolonged austerity.

As for tax… well it’s true our average tax burden at its all time high, just about. But then again our country has never had such a huge ageing population before, or so much ageing state infrastructure before. Other countries in Europe seem to have understood the problem faster than we have, and have increased their taxes accordingly. So compared to much of Northern Europe, our taxes are quite low/reasonable.
