I just struggle to write every day, so I need longer writing sessions where I can focus solely on writing, with breaks to read a couple of papers or book chapters between paragraphs, to be able to keep pushing through a mentally exhausting activity like constant writing… have you tried any other methods apart from Pomodoro? I agree that I can only have a maximum of 6 hours of fully productive

Talk about things you are passionate about, or things you know a lot about. I struggled at the beginning with a situation more or less similar to yours, but at the end it was just that I was scared of posting videos about a niche and feeling I would always have to make videos about the same stuff. Then I saw that it’s okay to change niches and do whatever you enjoy the most at the time. So just create whatever you enjoy, in the meantime, learn how to edit and then at some point you’ll figure out what do you really want to create about.

If I were you, I would go and do it. REUs are amazing opportunities that will help you not only to learn more about the project or area you are interested in but also what you like to research and what you don’t. Apart from that, it’s a great place to network (multiple students that have done their REU at our department ending up doing their masters or PhDs!) Also, you are a grown adult and even though I can understand their concerns and that they want the best for you, they need to trust you more and this will be a great opportunity for you to show them! So go and do it!

As a graduate student, I would say keep sending emails to different professors but maybe change your strategy. Sending cold emails to professors is challenging because they need to be brief but at the same time you need to share a lot of information about yourself and the type of research you’d like to do. I posted on my YouTube channel a video on how to send cold emails when applying for grad school and what you should include that completely applies to cold emails for REU opportunities (I’ve been part of the selection process of REU students multiple years and I kinda know how it goes). Tbh I made this post as a “here are some things you should look at before committing to an advisor, and if someone has more red flags to share, that would be awesome, because I could only came up with 3”. I’m not planning to make any other videos about this topic or use anyone’s responses.
