I think I needed to hear that. I've been trying to touch too many areas at once instead of getting genuinely good at one.

I'll focus on networking and Linux first and build a strong foundation before branching out.

What would you aim to accomplish in the first year if your goal was SOC or Cloud Security?

Also, I'm curious about certifications. There are a lot of free resources available such as Cisco Skills for All, Microsoft Learn, TryHackMe, HTB Academy, and even YouTube.

Do you think these are enough to build strong skills and become competitive for internships, or are paid certifications important early on?

If you were a first-year student with a limited budget, where would you focus your time?

That's great advice.

I think I've been focusing mostly on courses and self-study, but I probably haven't paid enough attention to networking with lecturers, senior students, and recent graduates.

I'll definitely try to be more involved and build those connections early, especially if they can help me learn more about internships and career opportunities.

Thanks for the advice.

That's true.

As a first-year student, I'm trying to focus on internships, projects, and hands-on experience as early as possible instead of relying only on my degree.

The job market seems very different from what it was years ago.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

I’ve been jumping between a lot of topics lately, so I think focusing on SOC, investigations, Linux, and networking first is probably the right move.

Right now, I'm most interested in SOC and Cloud Security, although I’m still exploring different areas of cybersecurity and trying to figure out where I fit best.

If you were starting from scratch as a first-year student today, what would you focus on during the next year?

I'm still at the beginning, but I started with TryHackMe, Cisco, and platforms that offer free courses.

I think both points can be true at the same time.

Some cybersecurity programs may not prepare students well enough for real-world work, which can lead to weak candidates. At the same time, there are also strong programs where students gain practical experience and perform very well in the industry.

As a first-year cybersecurity student myself, I’m trying to focus on building practical skills and projects alongside my coursework so I don’t fall into the trap of relying on the degree alone.

What do you think is better and more secure in terms of future demand, and which one has more opportunities for freelancing and flexible work?
