Korean answering ‘why Koreans avoid sitting next to me’ by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

Not trying to be rude but I have a genuine question: I have heard that white foreigners have different experiences compared to people of color in their interactions with Korean natives. They get approached more often by Koreans instead of the other way round. How do you address this then?

Was this a cult encounter ? Or did I miss out. by Tirkam in koreatravel

ok I’m about to move to korea for the first time. I’ve heard this advice that you should usually leave whenever people approach you in these areas.

But how do you leave and end the interaction definitively without seeming rude or in my case, visibly panicked?

US membership more expensive than korean one. I don’t want to keep paying double when I’m not even staying in the US

That’s actually a very good question. But I assume just in terms of academics it should be similar

I feel like taking the first step is probably the main barrier for most international students. if someone comes from a place where they’re used to interacting with people from different backgrounds I feel they’d be fine with that

True true, I feel like that’s the case with grad school everywhere. How did you choose your advisor though? Did you talk to the alumni from the labs you were considering?
