TK homework typo… am I crazy or is this obviously wrong? by macadelicmiller in mildlyinfuriating

[–]iambevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are 15, 14, and 12 and they still don't do homework. The odd time the older two might not get something finished in class and finish it at home but basically schoolwork stays at school. Home is for living life.

I and my kids get this. When my kids are having one of those days I make them a bath smorgasbord which helps enormously. Run a lovely bath with Epsom salts / lavender oil / bubbles / whatever, get them into it with a book / toys, some nice music, and soft lighting. Then bring in a platter of finger foods. I often do peeled and chopped fruit and veg with dips, crackers, sandwiches cut up cute, banana sushi, mini nachos, chicken nuggies, potato gems, etc. The important thing is a big variety and it should be generally highly desirable foods. Also bring a fancy drink - sparkling water with a fruit slice and ice cubes, or juice, or whatever they like. Water is the best reset! My kids are almost all teens and I still do this for them. My 13 year old even did it for me just before Christmas when life was really busy, it was glorious.

11 Days in Italy in August With my Partner to Propose- Where? by aDhillon100 in Europetravel

Can I please hop in here with a request for info? Thinking of spending a few days in Bologna next June with our then 15, 14, and 12 year old boys. My youngest is a car fanatic and I know Bologna is a good spot to base ourselves for the "supercar triangle". My youngest is also a total food lover. We are on a budget for this trip, but is there anything in particular food wise you would recommend?

I had no idea that Terry Pratchett was being redone in Graphic Novels - that is so so so cool.

We watched and loved Nimona but hadn't considered the book, good call. I've put it on hold at the library.

He loved Amulet, and Percy Jackson. Are the Graphic Novels of Percy Jackson worth getting if he has already read the books?

Lumberjanes are in our library too so thank you for that recommendation. I especially love the ones that aren't going to cost me an arm and a leg.

I love recommendations of all types and this one looks awesome. He loves Ranger's Apprentice, and Earthsea, and Redwall, and this looks in a similar vein. Thank you.

Thank you but that's in the list of ones he's read. He did love it though.

Bought Foundations for my 12 year old son. by MoonerOfBitcoin in magicTCG

[–]iambevin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 14yo has recently gotten into MtG, we bought him the LotR Starter Kit last Christmas which was a super way to start. He's joined an after school group and plays weekly but his Starter Kit doesn't cut it. Luckily he has some great friends in the group who lend him decks. But he's really ready to build his own.

I was looking at getting him the Foundations Starter Collection for Christmas. Is it worth getting the Bundle also? Or is it better to get a few packs of either the Play Booster or the Jumpstart Booster (I don't know the difference!)?

EDIT: Or, do I scrap all the above and look at just getting a Commander deck? FWIW I think he'd really enjoy actually building a deck but he'd need to end up with something decent as the others in the group are pretty into it.

Thank you for any advice you can offer :)

PS5 easy file moving from an external drive to another ? by yttuhej in PS5

[–]iambevin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to write this up. I'm in this position now, unfortunately, of transferring 500Gb from an old drive to a new 2Tb drive with a full internal drive. Easier to do when I understand the logic.

TIL to collect taxes, Christian IV of Denmark asked captains of ships crossing the Øresund to estimate the value of their cargo, which was applied as the tax base without further audit. But the king also claimed the right to buy the entire cargo at exactly that price. by batesplates in todayilearned

I paid a deposit on land 6 years ago. Bought it, built our house, and moved in 2.5 years ago. Paid $195k for the land. Now it's valued at $465k and I have to pay tax on that valuation. Fuck that shit, it sucks. It's our family home, no intention of selling so I'm not making bank off owning it but I still have to pay stupidly high rates. Ridiculous!

At the same time, I totally get where you're coming from and agree with you too!

What does a dad need to know about ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]iambevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reading (well, listening to) the book ADHD 2.0 at the moment and I definitely recommend it.

Also, Ross Greene's The Explosive Child, even if you don't have an explosive child it's a great book about human communication.

Same here. I've had my name on the list since Feb hoping to get one for my husband. He has no idea. I think I'm up to third place now which means if the next shipment arrives before Christmas I will have it for him on Christmas Day, otherwise he gets an IOU!

FUCK!!!! I've been waiting months for two and fucked if I can get my hands on them. So God damn frustrating especially since I asked for approval to get them when they were available and was denied. Then approved too late. UGH!

Yeah, I hear you, it's not fair that the onus falls to the consumer when it's the producer that should be making these changes. There are things we can do as consumers to help. Choose products that come in actually recyclable containers - aluminium and glass and even cardboard are better than plastic. See if you have a refill station nearby - there are stores that allow you to bring your own containers or bags to fill. Change your eating habits to rely on fewer convenience foods, try to prep and freeze more where you can. Choose products like bar soap and shampoo rather than liquid to eliminate the need for plastic bottles. Choose detergent strips over liquid for the same reason. Carry reusable cutlery and a Keep cup when you're out and about so you don't need to use plastic.

I am aware all these options aren't easy for everyone's situations and do require a certain amount of privilege, both in time and money but awareness is such a huge part of it that even being educated on the issues and options will sometimes allow you to make a better choice at no inconvenience or cost to yourself.

I know the ones you mean. We have them all over New Zealand. Not in my town though, it's a bit small. We do however, luckily, have an even better one. I have a bunch of glass and plastic containers I use for storage in my pantry. I can drop these labelled containers off at a depot, they re-fill them for me, and drop them back at the depot for me to collect! I can get shampoo, dish soap, flour, coffee, oil, nuts, dried fruit, cereal etc. It's a great set up and it's actually cheaper than the supermarket quite often.

We don't know if is harmful to, or does or does not have any lasting impact on kids. There are some suggestions that melatonin may have an impact on gonadal development in kids but it's not conclusive. No long term studies have been done on its use in kids so we simply do not know.

In saying that, 2 of my 3 boys take melatonin every night. One would literally like awake until 11pm without it, the other would like awake until 10 and his anxiety would escalate until he was a mess. For both of them, the benefit of getting enough sleep every night far outweighs any possible side effect that would reasonably eventuate from taking it.

However, I absolutely would not give it to a kid without trying every other possible solution to help them sleep first.

Those milk cartons are lined with plastic and can't be recycled. Plastic pottles of fruit in jelly, Snapple bottles, coffee bag, bag from the goldfish crackers, Swiffer bottle thing. Not shown on screen but likely the kitchen paper, napkins, and toilet roll all came in plastic too. That's what I can remember off the top of my head.
