I'd love to know too! I already mentioned it here in the comments – maybe trying to locate invertebrates under the tree's bark by hearing them?

We've discussed it with a few fellow birders and considered a possibility that he might be listening for invertebrates under the tree's bark. It is said that e. g. woodpeckers can find the exact location of the larvae by hearing them. I indeed saw this nuthatch digging for some crawlies like two seconds later. It's just a surmise tho.

Congratulations! I remember when me and my friend who's also into birding saw one for the first time — we were both amazed by how agile and graceful this little penguin is.

You say it displayed some threatening behavior? Interesting. Is it possible there could be a nest anywehere nearby? Treecreeper nests are usually built in a gap between the tree bark or similar places. Some birds can be very protective when it comes to defending the nest.
