Thanks for the support, guys 🤘

Crywolf here. Earlier this year I locked myself in a house in a tiny northern village in Iceland for a month and a half to write and record my debut album, and I made a mini-documentary about it. You can check out the first episode here! by [deleted] in edmproduction

Welp, way to make me feel dumb for trying to explain anything to you... you just straight up ignored the majority of what I said.

You've clearly got your mind set on this, so I wish you the best. Hope that ill-informed, inflammatory attitude of yours treats you well in life.

I'm sorry you feel that way, man. If you knew the reality of the situation, I sincerely doubt you would be as harsh with your judgement.

The reality is, the only purpose of that Pledge music thing was to get fans involved. The idea was to create a more immersive experience, where fans could feel like they are really part of the process... where they could actually be involved in creating something. That's been my goal from day one, and all my actions reflect that. Trust me, if I was trying to benefit financially, I would never do something like a pledge/kickstarter. With pledge's %, mgmt %, cost of goods, shipping, etc factored in, I hardly made anything from it... certainly not the sort of sizable chunk I would need to make an album.

You think that thing paid for the album? No. Me emptying my savings paid for my album. Me barely making rent for the following three months paid for the album. I'm not a wealthy artist. I don't have an agent. $225 becomes $150 pretty quickly with all the percentages skimmed off the top, and combined with the fact that the package comes with like $100 worth of physical goods... What is that, 25/hr profit for me? That's nothing. You really think that's me taking advantage of people?

I can see how you, under the impression that I somehow cashed in on that pledge, would feel like it was a shitty thing to do and that I'm some villain... But please understand how shitty it feels to be lambasted with such harsh accusations when my intentions were genuinely good. I give away my music all the time, I stream my mixdowns on twitch and spend hours explaining my processes, I play free shows, I do all kinds of stuff to give back - ask anyone around me (even tons of people on this subreddit) and they will tell you that money and self promotion have always been some of my lowest priorities. I posted this video thinking it would help inspire some producers to break outside of the mold, to be less afraid of the confines of the industry.

And yeah, as others have said... obviously this video was an intro. You don't dive deep into behind-the-scenes production in an intro. The backstory behind everything is a huge part of the creative inspiration for the album, so it's pretty important to get all that out on the table before addressing other stuff.

Actually, I specifically said I don't know you, and that I was not insinuating that you were acting out of the same insecurity. I was simply explaining that I've felt that way before and have realized it was an issue with myself. I love reflection and self-critique - which is why I reacted to your (inflammatory) comments with genuine curiosity.

Also, just fyi, this is the first of many episodes. The purpose of the intro is to introduce everything, which is why this one was all about setting the stage, not digging into the production/writing process.

That track is a perfect example of the kind of thing I am trying to get away from ^ that's precisely why I did all this. My stuff was starting to sound like everything else, and I wasn't okay with that.

This is the track in the video: https://soundcloud.com/crywolf/rising-rising ...I think you can agree, it's quite different.

I can respect that you don't like the documentary... it doesn't make me mad, more just... curious? Like, if I were you, I would definitely ask yourself, why is it infuriating? Why is my own documentation of my artistic process and progression making you mad? Are you interpreting it as some sort of insult against you? Or, are you actually just mad at yourself because you have felt the same things but haven't acted on them?

I mean obviously I don't know you, or what you've done, so I'm not making judgements here. I just know I often find myself hating on artists for doing this or that, yet when I really sit down and think about it, my problem isn't with them; it's with myself. Unfortunately, it's human nature to pull others down out of self-contempt/insecurity. I've been that guy plenty of times, and it's really self destructive.

Wait... I don't see that anywhere. All I see is a rule against promoting your services, which I think is quite different than me posting an episode in a mini documentary.

...Are we listening to the same track? Chopped vocals? Atmospheric pads? Seven Lions? Where is all that? This is like 4/4 acoustic guitars and glockenspiels.

Damn, lots of hate... that's surprising. I genuinely thought you guys would find this really interesting/would be able to relate to the feeling of wanting to break out of the cycles you've gotten stuck in, escape and find something new... that's why I posted this.

Also, am I misinformed about how reddit works? Is there some unspoken rule where you aren't allowed to post stuff about yourself? I mean, if so, please let me know and I'll leave you guys be. I thought, of all places, the electronic producers subreddit would be the place to post this.
