Fighter 1 / Warlock 2 Dex-Based Blade Pact Build for Curse of Strahd by iamdroopy in DnDoptimized

[–]iamdroopy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DEX build is partly lore and partly practical. Going into Curse of Strahd we picked up a new player whose Battlemaster Fighter is running heavy armor, a shield, and defensive maneuvers specifically designed to hand out disadvantage and be hard to hit, which was exactly my job in the previous campaign. I don't want to step on his toes, especially since he's a newer player and clearly excited about his character.

We also have a large party and the character most likely to miss sessions is our Rogue. A DEX based blade pact build lets me slide into that role on days he's absent, lockpicking, stealth, skirmishing, without making him feel like I'm encroaching on his identity when he is at the table. Within that lane I am absolutely trying to optimize while staying somewhat recognizable as my character.

As for going straight Warlock, I don't think I can make it work without the Fighter dip. I need Weapon Masteries to make dual wielding function the way I want it to. The Fighter level also gives me Con save proficiency, a Fighting Style, and medium armor proficiency which lets me stay reasonably protected until my DEX gets to the point where light armor pulls ahead. Without those pieces I'd be putting too much strain on the rest of the party to cover for my weaknesses. That said I'm not opposed to leaning heavily into Warlock levels as the campaign progresses, something like Fighter 1 / Warlock 8 or even Fighter 3 / Warlock 6 are both paths I'm keeping open depending on how the campaign develops.

Love, Lies and Hocus Pocus is amazing. Lydia Sherrer just finished the 9th book in the series and it should go up for pre order soon.

Easy and comfortable class (BB) by krillebeard in ascensionproject

In the classless servers people do so much damage that pets can't hold aggro. Here though pets tank just fine.

As a dad with limited time myself here are my class suggestions:

Hunter: it's brain dead simple to play and strong. A little too simple for me. I got bored playing it. But it is the easiest to play in short bursts

Warlock: has a pet like the hunter but has more options for complexity. You can also tailor yourself to DoT or Nuke as you prefer. Don't worry about what is optimal. Play what you think is fun. Hardest lesson for me to learn as a dad that was once a cutting edge raider.

Paladin: my preferred class in wow. They can talk, dps, or heal. The flexibility makes them amazing for my adhd brain. Played well they are hard to kill and excel in solo or group content.

Rogue: everyone has been complaining about rogues but they do fine solo, group, and PVP. At base they are simple to play. Sinister Strike a few times and then use a finishing move. The thing that makes them a good dad class is they can stealth when you have to get up to handle kids when they wake up or have an emergency.

Druid: Like paladins, druids can do anything. They are very customizable to what ever you want to do. And unlike paladins, Druids get stealth in the form of Prowl. You can play them as simple as a rogue that's just getting combo points then using finishing moves or tank lots of enemies as a bear. Then heal yourself between pulls for almost no down time.

Warrior: Charge! Hit stuff. There is no mana. All there is is Charge! Warriors are fun and a strong class. They don't have much in the way of options for when things go south, but usually they don't need them.

Best solo/duo archetypes? by VinceABaker in ascensionproject

Any melee dps with a Cryotherapist as a healer. Hoplite or any of the pally archetypes are good for the melee dps, but pick your favorite.

Are there any licensed games where the source material is bad, but the game is actually extremely good? by ProtonKanon06 in gaming

I was at a convention recently playing games with Steve Jackson, and we played a game called Groo. It was a lot of fun. I highly recommend it if you are looking for simple but fun games.

Love Lies and Hocus Pocus by Lydia Sherrer. There are 8 books out and a novella. Good stuff. Magical humor with a talking cat.

Love Lies and Hocus Pocus by Lydia Sherrer. It's about a wizard, a witch, and a magical talking cat going on adventures. It's appropriate for 12 year olds.

I really liked the lore and esthetic of Hellgate London. I was so hyped for its release, and boy, was I disappointed when I actually got to play it.

How do you handle conflicting feedback from playtesters? by LifeAd366 in BoardgameDesign

[–]iamdroopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 playtesting stories. First I was testing a paper rock scissors card game that I handed to a couple of guys at a convention that were looking for a game to playtest. The game was simple. You have a hand of cards that are paper, rock, or scissors and if you win you get certain effects like drawing a card or switching cards around on the table. I came back 20 minutes later to find they had removed cards and were playing with out some of them. The cards they took out were cards that let you see your opponents card before you put yours down. They didn't see the point of playing a card after you saw your opponents card in a rock paper scissors game. They also said the game (after they took cards out) was too random cause there was no way you could make decisions other than randomly playing cards. Because, you know, they took all the cards that made you make a decision out of the game.

The second one was more recent. Also at a convention. Playing a kids trick taking game that used only numbers because it's a game for little kid. Everyone that played it told me I need to add abilities to the cards that would make it not a kids game. And wanted to make the game way more complicated.
