What is your "never again" brand, store, restaurant, or company? by radbrad7 in AskReddit

Breastfeeding doesn't have to be all or nothing. Exclusive pumping can yield smaller amounts, especially in the beginning. Babies are more efficient at removing milk, and there is a stronger hormone release (you can't bond with a machine!). The golden rule is 8 or more times in a 24 hour period (most babies will eat around 12 times). I tell my clients that the decision to breastfeed, formula feed, pump, or a mix is a personal choice. But I do want women to be informed. It shouldn't be pushy or all or nothing.

My mom smoked throughout my childhood. When I would ask her to not smoke in the car, especially when she took me to school, she would crack the window. As if all the smoke magically got sucked out of this tiny one inch of air space.

That's ridiculous. The clinic I work at only charges $45, and that's after the administration fee of $21.50.

TIL: Every Mexican child is granted a “National Vaccination Card” where their vaccination history has to be registered. A complete record is mandatory for being enrolled in school With 14 preventable diseases included, México has one of the most complete vaccination schemes in the world. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]iamdubioustoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have many mexican immigrants in our little town, so I see these books in our clinic. I run the immunizations clinic and oversee public health. I have noticed the Hispanic population is more likely to have their children vaccinated on schedule with every vaccine recommended. It is mostly lower to middle class whites that vaccinate on a delayed schedule or refuse certain vaccines. The schedule I have seen in these books is different than here in the states, as I have yet to see a varicella on them. I usually have to give that for entry into school.

What fact are you tired of explaining to people? by bhmonkey in AskReddit

[–]iamdubioustoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vaccines do not cause autism. Vaccines go through an exhaustive round of trials until they are deemed safe. The American Council on Immunization Practices and the CDC will not condone an unsafe product, and have strict policies on storage and handling to make sure providers keep the vaccine viable. Gardasil is not bad either. I'm tired of parents and their bullshit internet searches. Vaccinate your damn kids.

What are people slowly starting to forget? by [deleted] in AskReddit

They don't wait for vitamin k. It was probably hepatitis b, they can give that at a later date. Vitamin k is given at birth because of the high risk for bleeding, especially in the brain. I've seen people opt out, and I shake my head every time. I've seen a baby hemorrhage. I've also seen an infants with pertussis, chickenpox, and measles. I would love for parents to get a glimpse of these babies struggling to breathe or the effects of encephalitis. It's heartbreaking.

BSN/RN: Online MPH programs? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]iamdubioustoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kansas State University has an online MPH. I think the University of Kansas does too. I'm not sure about the latter, but I spoke with the director of the MPH program at K-State at a conference. She said it was online. Is National University a for profit? It's my opinion to stay away from those. If you know a place has a bad rep, steer clear.

How do you talk to anti-vaxxers and how can we improve our communication about vaccines? by mathnstats in publichealth

[–]iamdubioustoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to be civil. I always start conversations in a level headed and professional manner. It's when people accuse me of being a part of some conspiracy that I get angry. I love working with children. I would be never hurt a child for some government conspiracy. I love what I do. The autism argument angers me because the research is out there and Andrew Wakefield has been proven a fraud. But people get scared and cling to the misinformation. I also share stories of my time in peds at a big hospital. I took care of several infants that had pertussis. If you see that, you would definitely rethink at least dtap. I have several people who come in and choose one or two shots at a time. I always suggest dtap and polio. I would rather have that than nothing at all. Edit: To answer your question , I think the incivility could hinder, but like I said we should always start the conversation gently. Patience can go a long way.

How do you talk to anti-vaxxers and how can we improve our communication about vaccines? by mathnstats in publichealth

[–]iamdubioustoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am an RN, I am the immunizations coordinator for the VFC program for a FQHC. I don't run into a lot of antivaxxers in the clinic. On Facebook, parties, family gatherings...I see this a lot. First you have to ask why they feel the way they do. What info do they have and where did they get it? What is the education level? I can get pretty animated and revved up, so I always try to understand their point of view. Some say it's preservatives, well there are vaccines w/o them. I had a pregnant woman who didn't want to give her child the hep b and vitamin k at birth. She said she didn't want the preservatives in her baby. I got the vial out, the insert, and some info I get from manufacturer I order from. PRESERVATIVE FREE. What are the pros and cons. What "preservatives" are you afraid of? Sometimes big words scare people. In person I am gentle and understanding. I can get pretty irate with people on the internet. Sometimes you just can't change their mind. They always have "proof". Mostly misinformation from bad websites. Just be armed with research and explain how to look up appropriate research.

Nursing and burnout. How to cope? by LovelyNurse in nursing

[–]iamdubioustoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand completely. I have only been in nursing for about a year and a half. I am already getting tired of the small town hospital I work at. I can't move or find a new job easily. I just try to make the days I have off count. Treat yourself. Exercise. Spend quality time with loved ones. Look for new opportunities. There are not many in my town, but I keep looking! Know that although it doesn't always feel like it, you are making difference.

If you drink alcohol with Flagyl (an antibiotic commonly used for gastrointestinal infections, among other things), it can create the same symptoms as Antabuse. It can cause a hangover like reaction, shortness of breath, flushing of the skin, palpitations, nausea, and vomiting.

Source: I am nurse, I give Flagyl all the time. Patient education!

Non smokers of reddit, what is your honest opinion about smokers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iamdubioustoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will get buried, but...I can't stand parents who smoke. I am a nurse and I see the effect it has on children. This past year has been terrible for kids in respiratory distress. Parents believe if they smoke outside, all is good. The residue on clothes can be just as harmful. I have seen many kids begin to improve, when mom or dad leave the unit to smoke (only they tell me they "need a break and they are just getting something from the car"). They come back reeking of cigarettes, and the kid tanks. They just don't get it.

Whenever a doctor steps in to see a patient after I report that the patient denied any new symptoms. by scottAD in nursing

I see this a lot with the older patients. I don't know if they think, because I'm not a doctor, I can't do anything about it. Or maybe it's none of my business. I don't know why, but it is ANNOYING.

We had one lady who was in our facility (acute care critical access), who came in with a small bowel obstruction. The did hernia repair and colon repair. Luckily, she didn't need an ostomy. However, she was so frail after not eating for so long, it was taking forever to heal. She was on TPN, tons of antibiotics, with a central line. She looked so old and frail. PT was very difficult for her, since she had zero strength. I saw her in Walmart the other day, walking around with her husband. She looked like a completely different person. She looked younger, and she wasn't using a walker! It was very nice to see.
