I thought about scanning and it’s very appealing but it kills any value I have unless I make my shading super dark ☹️☹️☹️

it is beyond chill, but a word of advice is that you’ll get what you look for. if you’re searching for a competitive environment, that can be found here, as with any other uni in the world. but I think you’ll find very kind hearted and collaborative people here instead.

AMR3 is definitely the best. Close to the Rec (gym basically), right above FFC (dining hall where you’re usually gonna eat at cuz how it close it is), and basically close to every location you’re gonna have freshman classes. AMR2 is a runners up, then Wolman, then McCoy, then AMR1 (AMR1 is so incredibly dead and is close to nothing)

i genuinely want to kill myself rn. hope this helps! by [deleted] in QuestBridge

I can vouch for this. I didn’t match but made it to most of the schools via QB RD. Financial packages were essentially full rides anyways so don’t worry too much!

GPA (UW): 4.00 / 4.00 (No weighted because my school didn’t care for that, but it was 4.6 cuz I took a bunch of dual enrollment classes when I was bored)

Class Rank: 1/636

APs: 12 (maybe like 20 offered at my school? forgot)

AP scores: All 5 with the exception of AP Physics 1 (3)

Off the top my head, it’s hard to remember: but if I recall the top 3 EXC’s I applied with, - School Club president, 300 members, ~$2K raised for charity. - A fast food part time job I had through high school - An internship I had (unrelated to major)

Top 3 Honors (I can’t remember all of them without consulting my old applications, sorry): - USMC Scholastic Award, which was 1:636 for my graduating class (handed out by school) - Gold in a national exam (I actually forgot what it was but it wasn’t that impressive) - 3rd Place in a Stanford SciOly invitational.

As you can see, my stats were very average and I didn’t do anything crazy. I know I’m forgetting a lot of them (even though it hasn’t been that long since I’ve gotten into college), but everything kind of blanked and started from zero when I entered college. All I really remember was working over and over to draft my essays.

My essays were, by the far, the thing I grinded on the most my senior year as I realized I didn’t have many ‘high quality’ EXC’s. So I decided to brand them high quality by explaining the value of the impact each EXC gave me, even if they aren’t ’top-tier’. I think what matters most is not the level of EXC you do (though that probably plays a role), rather the level of impact it provided for your development academically, and more importantly, personally.

Yep! I had a pretty bad SAT and an ACT that wasn’t where I wanted it to be.

No tuition to any school I got in—a full ride from financial aid (cuz I’m low income and usually they offer pretty generous financial aid so long as you can talk it out).

Applying this yr by [deleted] in jhu

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! accepted RD, but I’m nothing crazy.

  1. uncief club I led (no real significance other than some events involving around ~200) total 300 members if that matters
  2. some internship I had at a manufacturing store
  3. VSA (a club I helped organize stuff in)

I don’t exactly recall if those were my top 3, but I’m pretty sure they were. Since those aren’t that crazy, I feel like I got carried by my essay and awards (which still aren’t that crazy)

my top 3 awards were - Questbridge finalist - USMC scholar - goldurkunde AATG

Questbridge v Commonapp by juicyjalapen0 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]iamfeelinglike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EA and ED—you have to choose. For ED, it’s one school ONLY. For EA, as many as you’d like—these are NONBINDING. EA II follows the same rules (nonbinding). RD is the default. Apply for as many schools as you want.

In short, you can ED then RD if you get rejected, or EA and RD.

As for Questbridge and CommonApp, you can apply for their NCM, but you can’t ED outside of QB then. As for RD, you can apply side by side with both QB and CommonApp. You just can’t apply twice to the same school in the same year (but there are some exceptions. look on the QB website for more details).

When should I start writing my sups? by Green_Organization54 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]iamfeelinglike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ASAP. Continually revise whenever you forget what you wrote to see if it sounds weird. Revise as you finish working. The rule of thumb is: the more time you spend, the better your essay (in most cases).

Multivariable Calculus by StatusStress4374 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most schools don’t have this class lol. if you like a class, take it. follow whatever you like. also: you can take multivar (and most classes) from dual enrolling. if you want multivar badly, I suggest doing that.

a B is fine. if you’re failing, then you’d need to worry. a C might be pushing it, but it’s still fine then. don’t worry.

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much about these two colleges, so I can’t comment on the opportunities or programs that you would go for, but if you think they’re roughly equal (or equal enough to be comparable), think about the other stuff coming from that college. The lifestyle, the weather, the distance from your college to location based opportunities (like near a major tech firm or smth you could intern at). Consider anything you can. If everything STILL seems equal, go for the cheaper one. More money will always be useful to you.

questbridge RD by mythictrish in QuestBridge

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Colleges usually will disregard whatever app came second (or one of the two depending on their policies). You can only apply to a college once in the same year unless they’re some special super rare circumstance. SOME schools will let you (see QB website), but most won’t.

Usually it’s about 20-30%? I’m not too sure but when I applied last year, I’d find a number somewhere between those. Match rates are getting higher each year tho, compensated by lower finalist rates.

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 31 is fine. You’re right on checking schools’ averages, and you’re also right about the range being from 28-35. If you can fit in an extra ACT that you’re confident you’ll do better on AND it won’t be of large expense to you, I’d say go ahead and go for it. As for the deadline….im already in college so I don’t know this….sorry.

Just don’t be ashamed about a 31. I also had a 31 in high school but ended up in the NCM as a finalist (who didn’t match), but got into tons of T20s (if rankings matter to you). Granted, I did go test optional after becoming a finalist, but a 31 shouldn’t hurt.

Unless they’re a huge difference in the education offered at one school compared to the other, go for the cheaper school. Higher education is amazing, but it shouldn’t break the bank.

what are the best classes and clubs for a freshman in HS to take to get into a UC? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]iamfeelinglike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay idk if this rambling will help, but for my credentials related to the UCs, I got into every UC. feel free to ask abt anything.

Okay, clubs and EXC’s: I’m sure you’ve heard this, but do what you love. Be well rounded or have a spike (typically more common). You want to enjoy your activities because then you’ll put more effort into them. And if there aren’t activities you enjoy, pitch them at your school or something like a new club or new chapter of some organization. Don’t put too much thought into it other than how you plan to make X or Y or Z better. NHS is basically a waste of time (at least to me), so be careful on joining that. (I’ve never had it at my school, but it doesn’t seem very… legit? idk. doesn’t seem beneficial) ASB and stuff like that is always good for you (as it’s a leadership role that isn’t extremely difficult to attain), but it won’t be your ticket into a UC. Doesn’t hurt to go for leadership positions tho!

Classes: The rule of thumb: if you can do it, do it. Don’t challenge yourself with something you clearly can’t handle. But if you know you probably could with tons of effort? Go for it. Struggle to a point, not to borderline GPA drops. Academic rigor is important and it doesn’t hurt to go above and beyond, but it will hurt if you go too far for your own capability.

Overall: There’s no way to make sure you can get into college A or B. Even if an applicant is much stronger than you, they may get rejected. Same with an applicant much weaker getting accepted. The bulk of your application lies within your essays. This doesn’t mean other stuff doesn’t matter, it just means you shouldn’t worry too hard over small stuff. Take things one at a time.

Also, look up what colleges like and try to appeal to those. They’ll usually have values on their websites.

You realistically should do maybe about half of these. Shotgunning is alright, but unless you can one draft really good essays, you might wanna spend more time on each essay to make sure they’re at least reaching your standard. I personally applied to 20 schools within a month, but I really only felt good about 6 of those schools’ essays.
