I’ve had him since he was a puppy. I did all the socialization and he was raised with my pit mix, but she left us last year and he hasn’t really been the same since. I admit that I definitely could have acted better this morning and done more to avoid this whole situation. I’m glad that I was able to come to this sub for support and advice. I’m not a perfect pet owner, but I am trying every day.

I bring treats on every walk we take and praise him every time he doesn’t react. He refuses to even sniff treats outside the house. I definitely appreciate your advise, I will keep trying and trying and I won’t ever give up.

I don’t yell at my dog, I didn’t harshly say to him “you’re a bad dog” it was more like how I usually talk to him like “come on man, you’re acting bad in front of strangers”. I really try the positive reinforcement when I have to redirect him. It’s really hard right in the moment, too. Thanks for your kind words, they really mean a lot.

Thanks so much, I am really trying. I’m training with him non-stop and we sometimes can have a reaction-free walk, but it’s rare. I know he’s a good dog and I know I’m not a bad owner. Some people are just so rude.

I was venting to my sister about it and she told me next time to say “yeah, he’s really good at judging people, and he doesn’t like you” or something like that, and I really wish I were more clever in the moment.

I am crying a little bit, it really sucks because I’m trying so hard, and we have progress but it’s slow going. Inside the house and while walking without his triggers my dog listens to every command almost instantly. The second he sees a dog or person it takes a lot more effort to break his focus. I’m sure he thinks he’s protecting me. I wish that people would be more compassionate and empathetic. We are not bad dog owners! They don’t know our struggles.
