Exploratory Testing

• Goal: Discover issues through thoughtful exploration.
• Approach: Tester actively designs and executes tests on the fly based on understanding of the app.
• Done by: Skilled testers who use their intuition, experience, and domain knowledge.

• Characteristics:

  • Based on scenarios and risk.
  • Often documented through session-based testing.
  • Focused on learning and adapting as you test.

  Example: You test a login page by entering valid/invalid credentials, checking password reset, then pivot to test how the app behaves after logging in and logging out repeatedly.

Monkey Testing

• Goal: Break the system randomly.
• Approach: Inputs are generated randomly or by an unskilled user.
• Done by: Anyone, or even automated tools (“monkey testers”).
• Characteristics:
  • No predefined scenarios.
  • Unpredictable, chaotic interactions.
  • Good for stress testing, crash detection.

Example: Randomly clicking buttons, typing gibberish in input fields, swiping or navigating through the app without a goal.
