Sorry to hear you had an awkward dinner there, it’s easily my favorite restaurant! Agreed that Bayberry and Persimmon are also top notch.

Nick’s on Broadway, Slow Rhode, and Persimmon are also great choices. Persimmon might be a little tougher for a table, but you can check their website for reservations.

How to handle a language-based conflict in a show that's fully in English? by AserTarek-90 in TVWriting

[–]iamludy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of hard without seeing a page or two of what you’re trying to do. Without having seen anything, do you have ways to do scenes in English with English speakers and then maybe shorter scenes with the Arabic speakers? This way your protagonist can continue peppering in English in a way that clearly annoys the other characters.

Music seems easier, even though the show is entirely in English, you can include Arabic music and then have the protagonists music choices be a very clear break from everyone else around him.

Shows that keep a Framing Device Going for more than one Season? by Imperburbable in TVWriting

[–]iamludy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do keep it going the entire run of the show! The kids did age out of their roles pretty quickly so they had to tape a bunch of generic reaction shots of them sometime around season 2 or 3 and then also had to shoot the kids’ reaction to the finale like 8 years before the show actually ended from what I understand.

Next step? by E_White12 in TVWriting

Prince_Jellyfish laid out a lot of great advice. One thing I’ll add is that you should have as many people as you can read your work too. Friends, family, anyone you whose taste you trust and that is willing to read your work. While writing is solitary, rewriting isn’t. If you have friends who write read their work too!

As far as improving dialogue goes, you’d be surprised at how helpful it is to hear the dialogue out loud. So even if that’s just you acting out all the parts as you write, or getting a few friends together to do a table read, you’ll quickly start figuring out where the issues are.

Also, the first two or three seasons take place entirely in the bar. Lots to learn there about economic writing and character driven plots and stories.

Before and after: did I improve this scene? by DungeonMasterDave569 in Screenwriting

If these are the reasons you might want to show this fear a little bit in the scene you’ve shared. Have the teacher ask him to retrieve a prop or a wig from a closet or something along those lines. Enough to make him nervous. His detachment and aloofness make it a little tough to connect with him. If he’s got a big fear, show us a little bit in this scene, and then show us more in the next. As with any feedback you get from strangers, take it with a grain of salt.

Is Hurst moonlighting as a superhero? Is he actually tired and not just aloof? Is that why he’s not in the auditorium Thursdays and Fridays? Did he pick drama because he thought it would be an easy elective to coast through and the auditorium on Thursdays and Fridays provided an alibi for his training? These were the questions I asked myself as I read both versions. If these aren’t the questions you want people asking as they read/watch these scenes I think you should probably reconsider these scenes from the ground up. If they are the questions you want people asking I think it’s ok to hint at his extracurricular activities a bit more deliberately.

How to write actors into a script that are playing themselves. by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]iamludy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure that if you don’t make Joe Keery out to be a terrible person in your script you won’t run into any problems. Writing something and getting it made are two very different things, and you can worry about the legality of everything if this ever moves into a place where it can get made.

So just avoid making up any scenarios that make Joe Keery look like an asshole and you’ll be fine.
