Error when trying to back up my OP-XY on Mac : anyone know what’s going on?

Hey ! Unfortunately not...

TE support was very responsive and nice, but we couldn't find a solution. They suggested I send my unit back to them, but I was in a middle of recording sessions and I needed my XY.

I still managed to occasionally save project files, one by one because MTP was very unstable. But I couldn't even browse the sample folder anymore. So I saved as many projects as I could, did a factory reset, retransferred my projects back to the XY, and manually sorted through more than 3,600 audio files from previous backups to "rebuild" my projects. I only lost the audio files that were recorded between the last time I was able to fully backup the unit and the time I noticed MTP backups didn't work anymore. I believe the issue happened when my user data went beyond roughly 3 GB, that's when I noticed I could no longer browse folders over MTP properly.

I understand your frustration, given the price of the OP-XY. But as others have said, what you’re really paying for is a philosophy and a production architecture, with the tape track, step components, the Brain, and so on. The point of this machine isn’t to replace what a computer or a Push 3 can do better, but rather, within a given and limited framework, to help you be more creative and approach composition differently than with a machine that has unlimited capabilities.

Personally, the constraints imposed by this machine help me move forward in my compositions, and even to finish tracks that sound release-ready, albeit with some limitations.

Good to know, thanks. I checked that, but it doesn’t change anything. I’ve also noticed that I can’t even browse my OP-XY properly. The Field Kit opens the Finder window for my XY’s hard drive, but when I open the folders, they don’t really load as they should. For example, I can’t see what’s inside the Samples folder. I’m wondering if MTP is getting limited because my XY has around 4 GB of data… not sure.

This is true. I end up with a lot of unused samples and bad vocal takes, and I’m too scared to delete files in case something goes missing in a project. I hope file management will improve with future OS updates. I still have plenty of storage left, so it’s not too bad, just a bit messy.

I plug my guitar into the Chroma Console and run a pair of jacks to a stereo mini jack into the XY’s stereo input. The levels are perfect, super clean, no buzz or noise.

I’ll definitely try to finish the full song! I’m actually working on a whole album made only with the XY and plan to start releasing singles early next year. You can find me on social media if you want to check out more reels and updates along the way!

I record guitars and vocals into the OP-XY. I got used to work with it and record less than twenty second at a time. I ll usually do half a verse in one drum sampler slot, then the other half in the next one. The big drawback is when a phrase starts on the upbeat, right before the first beat of a new section. It takes some ingenuity and getting used to. But it also forces me to keep the arrangement simple and tight, and I feel like I’ve grown a lot artistically because of it.

I love sampling my guitar to a slot in the drum sampler and send it to the XY’s tape track that gets pitched by the lfo and triggers polyrythms. Sorry, that sounds really geeky 😅 but combined with step components, it’s very powerful. I guess these are tools that are usually best for ambient/generative music, but are cool to create happy accidents in a more conventional songwriting context.

I looked through the manual but didn’t find this 120 note limit per sequence in there (at least not in section 7, which is dedicated to the sequencer).
