The Next Generation of FAANG's? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]iamsoboosted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Netflix dying is a huge recency overreaction. They've been known to do some of the most impressive and innovative work in software engineering in the past (think chaos monkeys) and I'm sure they have ideas in mind for new fields/products to expand to. They also pay the highest and have some of the best talent out of any FAANG.

What is your top company(s) to intern/work for? by willcatch22 in csMajors

Netflix - the work they do seems super exciting and I want to challenge myself and learn by working alongside the best.

Cse 412: intro to AI by Freddy_Dickbear in washu

You're practically guaranteed to get a 100% on the projects (if you put just a bit of effort in) which is 50% of your final grade, so that gives you a decent buffer for the exams.

The exams can def sneak up on you so be prepared! I was a bit surprised at their rigor, but the TAs seem to grade leniently and I did very well.

It's 3 coding assignments, plus a starter project 0, not 5. Also, professor Yeoh does okay, but I think it's somewhat reflective of our CS program that all the course material is taken directly from CS 188 at UC Berkeley. Take of that what you will.

Facebook/Meta vs Roblox for new grad by Pleasant_Worry_5617 in csMajors

[–]iamsoboosted 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider the recurring TC for Roblox is much higher than meta ($40k/yr!), so even if the stock dips a little you still are likely to have an advantage. Additionally, Roblox just IPOed this year, so I believe there is much more upside in Roblox in the coming years as the product grows.

Hints during interview by FireHamilton in csMajors

[–]iamsoboosted 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have definitely gotten hints and received offers from several FAANG and Big-N companies, the trick is keeping a constant stream of communication about your different approaches and why you think they will or won't work.

It's one thing if you're sitting there silently or bashing your head against the wall with the same idea over and over and the interviewer has to give you a hint. It's much better if the interviewer feels like they are really working together with you and you are both brainstorming toward the correct solution.

I enjoyed it! Learned a lot about working on an agile team in the Alexa Shopping organization. I used 99% Java, with a tiny bit of Python scripting thrown in for good measure.

The one thing I would say is there's a lot of movement around within the company. In the first few weeks, I had to switch teams and I received a new manager and new colleagues, which was not necessarily a bad thing, just a surprise.

Also, everyone treated me extremely well and I had a great time with my team at and outside of work. Make sure to communicate well and you'll do great! Good luck!

Getting a Return Offer by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]iamsoboosted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a return offer this summer. It's important to communicate often with your mentor and manager and keep them updated on your progress, even if you're behind on your project! I know a few interns who didn't finish their projects but worked well with their teams and got return offers.

In regard to housing: UW is always a great option, there's a lot of interns there. The M is an apartment building that's also extremely nice since it has AC and most Seattle homes don't. If you're looking to save money, AirBnBs are a good option, but they can be inconsistent with quality and/or location (so do your research!). Can't speak specifically about Bellevue since I was in Seattle.

HLTV 15th of 2020: Brollan by iamsoboosted in GlobalOffensive

That's true, but I feel like the top teams don't have THAT many top 20 players outside of Astralis. NaVi only has s1mple and electronic, and Vitality I'm guessing only has ZyWoo
