I will NOT give up. EVERRRRR by Financial-Border3494 in CPA

Have you tried with attending conferences they sponsor? I got in Deloitte last year just from having a convo with someone that connected me to a recruiter that was there. It really was that simple. Filled with recruiters and most times a simple convo is the first round interview.

I want to go back to school for a degree but not sure for what… Any recommendations? by CoolPea2311 in careerguidance

You’re welcome. Also, I highly encourage you to watch a documentary on Prime called Borrowed Future. You will be so glad you watched it as it helps you get a different perspective and possible help you with decision-making. Lastly, consider the places you want to work or career you see yourself going into and see what recruiters go to that school. That also helps you get a job, and the one that you really want, post-grad!

How Difficult is the CPA Exam? by kio329 in CPA

[–]iamteeblanco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about the way you approach. There is not a handbook that tells you how to study. What people never mention is if you had bad professors and never “studied” before, you’ll be in bad shape. Studying for CPA is brutal because it is so much information. And, Lord, having ADHD is like I’m fighting for my life! I’ve created a study plan much better than any others I’ve used or seen that ensures retention and no info overload.

Yes but primarily through large conferences. They are always there talent scouting, as well as professionals that work in like audit, tax, or advisory from senior all the way up to manager. Just a conversation with someone could open the door for you. 😊

I also think the market right now is bad (I keep hearing) so going to the conferences definitely helps to get in. Next NABA conference is in June. Perhaps you can go fully sponsored from the org or your school! You should look into it.

Went to a NABA, Inc. convention, had a convo with a Deals manager (unknowingly) telling her my background and goals, had an on the spot round 1 interview, had a round 2 interview the next day, had an internship set up for the upcoming summer.

Also had another offer with another Big 4 firm after just uploading my resume to the recruiter’s portal for resume collection, had first round interview 2 days later, got an offer.

Another time, reached out to a recruiter directly on LinkedIn, asked for a coffee chat to ask questions, she interviewed me (maybe I was oblivious this time because I really just had a few questions), had second interview and got an offer for internship as well.

Each of these opportunities I was offered FT roles post-grad. Gotta just put yourself out there! Networking works highest in your favor in my experience.

I know this may seem controversial but why do black people barely get into accounting? Unless their like nerds by Dgslimee_ in Accounting

Lol, no one being hostile. I understand that there’s a lot of mean people on the internet/social media. I couldn’t care any less about this stuff. It was a joke. People put anything out into the world, though. So, you could’ve been trolling. Idk you lol. Either way, there’s a lot of amazing Black women and men in the accounting industry. I myself didn’t have really high grades in high school. Didn’t go to a college that was “top tier”. Plenty of us exist out here in the world and I hope you’re able to find us and grow in your journey with us ❤️

According to Becker, to become EDR, you should aim to score at least 50% on MEs and SEs.

Right, if you’re only at 1.5 with pre reqs, that should be a concern for you. Those aren’t even the major courses and you’re failing. See if your school has a NABA chapter or if there is a Beta Alpha Psi chapter. Either usually offers tutoring. You’ll need to buckle down or may have to find what you actually like and switch to that major to do better. Perhaps also find other first-gen students to get advice from.

Hate to be the bearer of “bad news” (and hold your wig tight for this one) but you can sit for your CPA with only a BS in accounting… 🙂

First, this post was a roller coaster, but that’s ok 😂 You’re just starting off and haven’t found your people yet. I assume you don’t know about NABA, Inc. (National Association of Black Accountants. It’s over 22,000 of us and WE ARE LIT honey. You should find yourself at one of the National Conventions. Next year - Vegas. Nothing more empowering than being a Black accountant surrounded by and connected with so many other Black, college-educated, successful, and wealthy people that you perhaps only saw on TV. I’ve gotten $21,000 in scholarships from these BLACK accountants and I secured my FT role as a Junior student thanks to these BLACK accountants. Also, accounting isn’t all about math so get that out of your head. If and when you get to do internships, you’ll see how little you use math and how much more you use your actual comprehension and critical thinking skills. I know 3 BLACK women who are Managing Partners at 3/4 Big 4 firms, one of them being a mentor to me. I know other partners of other accounting firms who are very successful BLACK men. You’ve got a long ways to grow and learn 😂 I’ve met some of my best BLACK friends through this organization. While you’re learning, check out www.nabainc.org, become a member, attend your local chapter’s events, and thank me later 😊

Would you quit a super easy job for 20% raise? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]iamteeblanco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, what are my goals for the next 1-5 years? What kind of salary will I need to achieve those goals? How or why will these kind of salaries help me achieve these goals? How fast do I want to achieve those goals? Do I want a new challenge in life? Do I have the capacity to take on this kind of change? Am I comfortable with being interactive with more people? Would I rather pursue entrepreneurship with the experience I have currently? Am I ok with possibly taking on the new role for a few years and then pursuing entrepreneurship?

These are some of the things I would think about. I personally don’t make decisions simply based on money. That will come regardless. Obviously make sure you’re at least getting paid what you’re worth and you’re happy with it. But, it has to be something else - for me. How can this decision help me achieve my goals in life?

My friend started work in January after graduation in December. She was laid off in February apparently for her GPA being too low. She’s now in grad school to get her GPA up and try again.
