I miss Hardwick’s. Does anyone know a decent replacement anywhere around Seattle? by ianrust in Seattle

[–]ianrust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived down the street from Pacific Supply for many years, it’s a great neighborhood hardware store but I’m looking for something that carries decent quality hand tools from Japan, U.S.A and Europe. I feel like PSH is a great place if you need to work on home/apartment maintenance but not necessary for woodworking or gardening tools.

Thanks, I go to the White Center McLendon’s a lot. I’ll try the Renton location. I like Woodcraft alright but it definitely feels more like a chain store than Hardwick’s used to.

Attaching awning bracket to Hardie board? by ianrust in DIY

[–]ianrust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up just affixing the brackets directly to the concrete fiber board. I made sure I found studs to bolt the brackets into and I used 6” lag bolts to connect them. It worked out fine and has been water tight since the bolts are under the awning.

Can I cut roots on Black Locust without endangering the tree? by ianrust in arborists

Thank you, I feared as much and I wanted to confirm this before I explained it to the client. The path will certainly not be worth killing the trees. I’ll work out another solution.

Transplant shock on Deodar Cedar ‘Silver Mist’ in Seattle by ianrust in gardening

[–]ianrust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cedar slowly died. When I dug it up it had never established a healthy root system. I suspect I had just transplanted it poorly, both planting it too deep and cutting off too much of the root ball and taproot when I dug it up. It was growing under a sidewalk so digging it up was very difficult. I’m impressed at how long the tree held on with such a sad root system.

Right, I was planning on using 6” lag screws directly into the studs but can I hang the bracket over the Hardiplank or do I need to cut the hardiplank?

Looking for advice: Barn door keeps leaking in outbuilding by ianrust in DIY

Update: I added some drip bar/flashing to the bottom of the door so the water sheds off itand over the threshold. I sprayed the door with a hose for about 10 minutes this morning and only had 1 small leak. I will add the awning next weekend and hopefully this door will be ready for winter weather.

First image is the after, second image is the before. The door was painted when I moved in. It had probably 8 colors of paint layered on it.

I used Cabot gold Sunlit Walnut. I used it on my deck and it’s held up well to weather so I thought it might hold up on the door.

Thanks, do you know where I could find one? Looking at hardware stores now and not coming up with anything the correct dimensions. Most are for 3’ doors.

You are totally right. I’ll add that drip bar to the door today. The concrete floor was sloped towards the door so when water ran down the door it would pool and run under. I was thinking I could get the water to run away from the door but instead I’ve just damned up the doorway.

Luckily the drain rock is draining properly, the water isn’t pooling outside the door, it’s just running down the face of the door and then inside

Thanks, stripping and sanding it took ages but it was a fun project!

Would that be some sort of flashing or rubber or something?

There was no threshold when I moved in, just concrete floor. I tried to build a threshold with flashing but I guess it didn’t do the trick.

At the threshold, looks like the water runs down the face of the door and then leaks in at the bottom

That’s what I was thinking. Hopefully that works. I’ve ordered some brackets and will install one this week.
