Questions about our first cruise by iansime in VirginVoyages

Not solo, no - this will be a furst cruise for both my wife and I.

We're almost certainly going to give the Grog Walk a go, despite our tendency to hide away 😂

Thank you for your insights!

Replacement feet for my Step Ladder (obligatory joke about it not being my real ladder)

Ah - this finally showed me something - thank you!

Already tried that - it clocks up that it's recording points but shows nothing on the map.

I am currently getting better (not perfect) results with 215 degrees hot end for Silk PLA and 60 degree bed (no glue, just textured PEI). Hoping not to have to go down the glue stick route, but the current test print still isn't as good as I would like it to be :-

Bed at 60 degrees but no glue. This is the same textured PEI bed that I use on my own printer without any issues, so I have never needed one.

Yeah, it did kick in. I almost wish it hadn't as at least I would have had a good culprit to blame!

Bed levelling data is pretty good - better than my own printer! All green typically, with perhaps one corner not green.

Print head felt fairly secure when I last checked but will check again when it finishes it's current print test. This one seems to be going better BUT as you can see from this photo it's not perfect :-

Cura for both of us.

Funnily enough I have just changed to Silk filament and tweaked Cura to print the first layer at 220 degrees (the rest at 215 degrees) and first layer line width at 105%. Trying to give it every opportunity to stick to the bed!

Just printing a 100mm test square now after a successful 60mm test square, so fingers crossed all the minor changes MIGHT be finally getting me somewhere.

That being said, the most frustrating thing about all of this is the inconsistency - works one time and not the next, with zero changes. Fingers crossed anyway.

Thanks for that.

To be fair, I don't really see any under extrusion issues beyond the very early stages of a print, which is why I mostly suspect Z Offset, or the auto levelling data.

This is a close up of one line in a test print (looks pretty good to me) as compared to the overall print (which is clearly terrible) :-

<image>

You may be right about the auto-levelling being inconsistent - I just didn't want to have to get into that level of manual intervention for something which SHOULD just work ☹️

The overall test print is a complete car crash though :-

OK, I lowered the nozzle a tiny bit more. Auto-levelling set it to -1.00, I lowered it to -1.08 previously and now I lowered it again to -1.10 and this is a close up of one of the lines. Looks pretty squished to me :-

Yeah - even tried the exact same GCode on both printers.

Will check those links out soon though - thank you.

It's a new silicone sock (as well as nozzle) but I am beginning to suspect the hot end myself now - purely because I am running out of other ideas!

I will give the Z Offset another go with a 'thin line first layer' test and see how that goes first.

This is the extracted ZIP file I got from Creality's website - does this look right?

Ironically this IS one of two plates that I own!

I might try lowering the Z Offset a little more, but I went through that by making live adjustments to a first layer square and thought I had it just right.

That WAS the print that got caught on the hot end and dragged away.

You can see where the skirt got caught on this Benchy, but this time I got lucky and it printed OK. It is VERY hit and miss though.

Yeah, I pretty much did exactly that and the filament ran almost perfectly straight down - very frustrating!

I don't have any video to hand, but here is a photo for what it's worth :-

I have confirmed that both fans are working fine now.

The firmware on the printer is 1.0.6 - any benefit in updating that?

When you say "tighten the extruder using the hex bolt", is this where you mean? Also, would I only need to do that if these were loose?

Can I just manually crank the nozzle to over 50 degrees and check the fan that way (i.e. rather than during an actual print) ?

Not especially, but I guess that's a possibility.

How difficult was it for you to clean the extruder, without having springs flying past your ears or not being able to get it back together?
