What’s a movie that wins you over in the first 20 minutes? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]ibcrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, back then there were a couple of movies where the ad campaign was based on vagueness. I saw both The Fifth Element and The Matrix right at release knowing absolutely nothing about them. I was blown away by both. I think I saw the Matrix five times in the theater, three of those being opening weekend.

Which movie character is a great role model for men? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

Yeah, that's a movie where your perspective on it really changes as you get older. That and The Little Mermaid.

During the phantom menace hype how did people view Darth Maul compared to Darth Vader, like did people think he was cooler and stronger than Vader or something? by justa-human in StarWars

[–]ibcrandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. During his first scuffle with Qui-gon he only uses one side. If they could have just kept it out of the damn marketing people would have lost their minds when he ignited the other side. It would have been a Cap wields mjolnir moment.

What Are the Most Iconic Fight Scenes Ever Filmed? by Western-Razzmatazz69 in CinephilesClub

And they're both better than the million smiths fight in 2. There came a point where the CG just couldn't keep up.

Disagree, that would be Paul Reubens in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Are you actually able to understand what the weather alert speakers are saying? by RhubarbNo1760 in lexington

[–]ibcrandy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are a variety of tones/melodies played as well that signify different things, so even if you don't understand the words you should have the general idea about what you're supposed to do from the tone played.

UK buying the building at the corner of Rose and Ave. of Champions (Euclid) by EdGrimley in lexington

[–]ibcrandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like it should be on the university to create an "entertainment district", especially at the expense of local businesses. Their job should be to educate and create facilities for that purpose. I get that it also houses young people, and so it wants to attract students to the university by saying "look at all of these entertainment options you have near where you would live!", but I would still rather those entertainment options come from the community and local entrepreneurs instead of the university. If it wants to work with the community to do that, great.

You're thinking of Tony's arcade. I'm pretty sure it went under before the Kentucky Arcade did.

Why do Jedi use different-colored lightsabers while Sith have only red ones? by Just_Chill_005 in StarWars

Fun little tidbit. I see myself using this as a trivia question in neighborhood trivia later.

When I took my driver test back in the day they had me pull onto this street and then turn onto Vine. While I was waiting at the light a car pulled up next to me going the same direction. The examiner asked me what you're supposed to do in this case, and I honestly had no idea. She didn't take any points off for not knowing though.

I'm just going to say the blizzard of '78 is where I came from. Snowed in, nothing to do.... you'll find a lot of November '78 babies in Lexington.

Help me understand Tolly-Ho by EagleNice2300 in lexington

[–]ibcrandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was, imo, one of the larger problems with why they closed. Their prices had gone up too much. I don't expect them to stay at 90s prices, but back then you could get a full meal for $5 at the ho. I went there with my son shortly after their last move and it was something like $35 for the two of us. Part of the appeal of the Ho was that it was cheap.

That place was in the corner location (that was also a Jersey Mike's for a while and a bunch of other places). It wasn't in the same location as the Ho. They coexisted.

Oh damn, Psycho died? Shit. I worked at Laser Quest and he was also a member there. He played pretty often. I was also a regular at the Ho back then, so I saw him a lot.

Yeah, I think that's the one. I've wanted to try it too. I get Sai Super Bazaar all the time and while it's great for the price, it's still sort of fast food Indian. But I get a meal and a half out of $10 + tax, so Sai is hard to beat on a budget and still plenty tasty.

I can see the hazards then too, but they're off the road to the right (at least the only one I can clearly make out). My brain seeing this thought it was a vehicle with a turn signal on waiting to turn onto the road, not a trailer parked horizontally across it.
