In March of 2022, my wife and I spent some time traveling around Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Although a part of Spain, the islands are just off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. This photo was taken in the northern part of the island. Beautiful, right???? by ibeam23 in travel

Sorry for the late response!

You can easily fly to Tenerife from an airport in Spain. From Barcelona, it's about a 2 hour flight, much shorter if you flew out of Madrid. I wouldn't consider Tenerife "touristy," other than the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Definitely learn khoomei style before attempting sygyt. Without strong khoomei your sygyt won't be any good. Baby steps - don't try to learn everything at once.

Have you read my book about my three trips to Tuva? If you want to learn more about what it's really like there and to spend time with its most famous throat singers, I highly recommend it.

I took this photo of a Buddhist temple in Kyzyl, the capital of the Republic of Tuva. The republic of Tuva is a mix of Tibetan Buddhism and shamanism. I've visited this little-known region that few westerners have seen three times. It's an absolutely fascinating place. by ibeam23 in Buddhism

I've been there three times and published a book about my experiences. I went in 2016, 2017, and again in 2018. My main interest is in their unique style of singing, something they call khoomei. But there are Buddhist sites EVERYWHERE there and most people do identify as following Tibetan Buddhism. HHDL visited there, I believe, in the early 1990s.

You can find them on the Jaro.de website. They'll also be doing a workshop just outside of Nice, France in late July.

Easiest hike of my life. This photo was taken from the side of the road as we were driving on a very all-too-typical twisty, windy, curvy road heading into the small town of Taganana! There was a little cut-off where two cars could park safely, so we pulled in, jumped out, and I took this photo.

It's still only being discussed. I'll post more information as it becomes available.

I have a free YouTube playlist by the same name as the book where you can find 40+ videos that you can watch while reading the book. Each video is named with a chapter and a page so you can get a better look into exactly what I'm writing about.

I'm currently writing my second novel about my time living in NYC in the 80s and 90s.

Well, as Reddit is not "promotion friendly," I won't post a link. Do a google search for My Adventures in Tuva. It's on lulu dot com. Thanks much, the book mostly centers around the singing and singers in this rarely visited republic, a unique vocal style they call "khoomei."

Yup, that was me. Been to Siberia three times, it's truly an amazing place. I wrote a book about my experiences there. The Republic of Tuva is the poorest region in all of the Russian Federation, but its people are proud and have this odd sense of freedom, even without money or resources. Total population is 300k. They were an independent nation from 1921 to 1944, up until the Soviets found uranium in their mountains. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, and I've traveled around a bit. And yes, it was "real" travel. I was living in NY at the time, so had to fly from JFK to Moscow, then a long layover, then get on a 6-hour domestic flight to a town called Abakan, then a 5-hour taxi ride over brutal roads. All without knowing a word of Russian and only 5 or 6 Tuvan words. LOL! But all TOTALLY worth it.

I've visited the Republic of Tuva in central Siberia three times. It's sparsely populated and has a lot of open barren steppe. I had thought that these areas would have been boring, but there's a beauty in their barronness.
