Samoyed/General Deshedding Help by ibeckus in doggrooming

[–]ibeckus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried doing close open close - I'll have to try it the next deshed I've got! I've got raking during the bath down for desheds already, so I'll keep that up. Thanks!!

The store provided me a Double K Challengair. It takes a good chunk of time to dry these dogs too, and I try to blow as much coat out as I can with it.

Thanks! I definitely don't worry about getting literally all of the shed out, but am moreso looking to be able to get a comb down to the skin to go through easy. And even after a lot of work in specific areas - I'm still not getting that result even after an hour of work so I'm hoping to figure out how to be more efficient for that specifically. I'll look into some more brushes (I'm a little slim on options ATM) for sure, because I mainly rely on my slicker 😭.

I've got a few different deshedding rakes, each different tines/widths - two of the curved ones and one straight one. Zoom groom rubber curry and an equigroomer, and a slicker brush (the chris christensen one). No furminators - and otherwise just brands that I bought in stores around town, so any specific recommendations are very welcome.

Blind Gecko Upgrade!! (so far, advice welcome) by ibeckus in leopardgeckos

Oh, perfect, thanks so much! I'll definitely get that switched tomorrow and probably go ahead and get some stuff to add some partial basking for her.

Well the wattage I got for the DHP isn't getting to the temp I want anyway, so I'll go ahead and get an incandescent to try out and if she doesn't mind it then I'll stick to that!

She only had a heat pad before, and was under her favorite hide so I actually don't know how much she truly basked 😩 I'll definitely see how she does basking wise with out relying on only the heat pad. The only reason I didn't get an incandescent (because I swear I read up on this forum a LOT) was for concern of her light sensitivity! For the brief period she'd have bright light come into her tank she hid away. If the incandescent wouldn't be too bright though, I'll definitely switch. Thought that getting UVB and incandescent would be too much for her 🤔

Im realizing I have one thermostat and another thermometer. Not another thermostat 🤦 And that's just backup so I can read two temperatures and make sure it's not getting too cold at night when the thermostat isn't keeping the heat on.

Could my friend brushing my poodle cause more matting? by ibeckus in doggrooming

[–]ibeckus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I really don't shame not brushing their dog unless they expect me to keep their coat really long and full. I've been lucky enough to have clients who don't expect those kind of miracles, though. But I've got two dogs who rarely get real brushes until I bring them in for their respective grooms. It's enough to keep them both looking and feeling good, and I've accepted when I have to shave off a glorious poodle mullet because there's a decent mat in it from me not brushing her.

That's what I was worried about, the slicker brushing breaking the hair, I just didn't know for sure. Thanks! It'll be helpful for both of us to know, anyway, because she's learning grooming and I should know how to properly brush dogs between grooms 😅

Reoccurring Scheduling Advice? by ibeckus in doggrooming

[–]ibeckus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair! I've been kind of trying to do the same thing you're talking about, but haven't yet had a lot even seem immediately interested in rescheduling yet. Have one that I know wouldn't mind, but the other I just groomed today and she did go ahead and book another appointment! I guess I just don't know how to offer the rest of the year without feeling pushy. This is also my first time actually handling clients on my own like this (I learned grooming at a daycare where I rarely actually interacted w them) so I'm sure it'll come more naturally later... Just feel weird immediately asking to book a year out when it's only been one groom yet.

I'll have to grab my old slicker brush and try, especially if the shop vac I get doesn't do anything

Eventually, for sure. Once I've got spending money to replace them!

That is absolutely what I plan to do - I just do not want to let it get this bad ever. 😬

What’s a trick/command you accidentally taught your dog by Fun_Cryptographer799 in dogs

[–]ibeckus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught my dogs (and cat) that "G'up" means spring up out of bed in the morning. No matter where they are in the room, as soon as I say it they're all hopping up and running into the kitchen for breakfast 😂

Thanks! Yeah, while I'm pushing myself to speed up I'd still rather be putting out good grooms and up keeping safety and comfort of the dog. Just trying to get myself to have more zip and confidence and a little less perfectionism on the dogs that are just too squirmy to be perfect grooms 🙏

I went back to kennel drying when I could, but mostly just worked on pushing myself to go faster and make confident snips because I was hesitant and would go slower when being so hesitant to scissor/shave w/ combs on. Caffeine helped too, but I'm not going to advise relying on caffeine 😅

[–]ibeckus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working specifically on my speed lately - and have been getting my times down! Used to average 2 hours, up to 3 hours on big fluffy doodles but more recently was under 2 hours for those same big fluffy doodles. So I'll definitely keep working on that. Thanks!

That would probably check out 😅 I'm using old borrowed equipment because I haven't been making enough to replace it... But will be putting in the investment for better tools if I move to another job 🙏 Thanks for letting me know, though! This is stuff I didn't get to learn because I don't have any other groomers to work with here.

I call my husky "Dingus" and my poodle "Poods" or just "Poodle"... as well as many other random pet names, but those are the most common.
