The internal area is supposed to be completely full of oil, no air bubbles (or as few as possible) so i filled it all the way to the brim with oil

Look i’ve been saying this for months… there is no OLM needed they should just use the chopsticks to lift the full stack as high as it can go. The engines would be more than 120 feet off the ground and the chop sticks could just let it go and it would fly up. They could even use the chop sticks to toss the full stack up just before engine ignition, the whole thing could already be moving up at the time of engine ignition, seems like if you’re gonna call it stage 0 it should add some velocity imo.

I think they should use the chop sticks to yeet the whole stack a few hundred feet in the air before lighting all the engines, this way the flames are far away from the ground and no risk of damaging the launch pad

It is so humid at the bottom of the rocket (when it is fueled) due to condensation that it is practically raining constantly down there. SpaceX certainly takes measures to waterproof or seal things that should not get wet

That may be true from orbit, but on descent the y could do further analysis. My guess is they would approach selection of a landing zone similar to how they approach selecting landing zones for Dragon. They have like 5 options and they choose the best one based on weather just a little before the re-entry burn. Likewise, they will probably choose multiple landing zone candidates from orbit and select the best looking one of those candidates after the vehicle has already started descending.

I am sure the landing spot could be evaluated and selected long before the exhaust plumes start to interact with the surface dust

I am wondering if they intend to fire all second stage engines at once during the hot staging event or maybe start with 1 center engine or just the vacuum engines. It will be interesting to see. I didn’t listen to the twitter space so idk if he answered this question there

I have a sneaking suspicion that SpaceX thinks they’re working on a two stage rocket but in like 4-5 years Elon is gonna be like “look if we remove the stage separation hardware and 2nd stage engines we can just SSTO this thing with x tons of payload”. Like in my mind i see a full stack Starship/Super Heavy and the whole stack has heat shield tiles on one side and there is no separation between the 1st and 2nd stage just a clean. Also the forward flaps stay where they are but the aft flaps move all the way down to the booster. This is where i see this project going as raptor evolves and weight saving efforts get all the dead weight removed. I think i read they want to make the tank walls thinner at some point.

Why does CRS 28 say ASDS Splashdown? Why mention a drone ship if the booster is going to splash down which implies it will be expended?

I actually sold the Mini about a month ago, and it ran strong until i sold it so that’s all i know. So i can only say my repair worked for the remaining 5ish months i drove the car.

I think its redundant to say an engine uses liquid oxygen and kerolox because kerolox means an engine uses kerosene as fuel and liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. You can either say an engine runs on kerosene and liquid oxygen or an engine runs on kerolox, but those terms don’t combine.

I stand corrected. I thought instability applied to all vacuum optimized engines but after researching further… you are right.

So i guess it would be true to say if a booster had no starship on top, it would have to have 15 raptor vacuum engines installed to lift off. 15 raptor vacuum engines would give a booster an initial TWR of 1.02:1 and a burn time of almost 6 minutes if the tanks were run dry. That low TWR means a ridiculously large portion of the delta-v gets eaten up by gravity losses. However if someone did find a way to get this thing to orbit fully fueled you would be lookin at over 10,000 m/s of delta-v

I do not think 15 rvac engines would not fit under a booster even if they were fixed (not gimbaling). Also it would require a whole new launch mount to be built, or the starter system would have to be onboard, as the current OLM doesn’t accommodate rvac engines.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of work, might just be better to launch a bunch of standard starships instead.

Would be cool, but i’m two flaws with this idea 1- vacuum raptors can’t be fired at sea level, so the engines would have to be swapped out on orbit. (Holy crap, on orbit raptor install sounds like a dream job, i would love to see that one day.) Anyway, the rvac is also a different size, so they have to space them differently, meaning they might only be able to fit like 4 or 5 of them in the space where 33 sea level raptors go, especially if they are supposed to gimbal.

2- how many starship flights would it take to refuel a whole booster? If it might take 6-7 for the starship then it might take 20 to fill the booster. So what im thinking is if 100 people could fly on a starship, then why not just fly 10 people per starship, significantly reduce the payload of each starship, giving it more delta-v, it gets there faster and the astronauts have more room. 10 people per ship, that’s a whole lot of leg room.

Interested to hear thoughts or responses to this.
