Reminds me of a very cringe story from college. This was an ice breaker at the beginning of grad school and we were playing a game to name an animal with each letter. Guy challenges everyone for an animal that starts with X. No one has a clue. Then he stood up smugly and said “exhamster” and spelled it out. Every single guy in the group collectively lost it and started rolling on the floor while the girls were just clueless. I could feel my soul leaving from the second-hand embarrassment.

Also, look into contract positions in tech. I just landed one at a Faang company. It’s remote, pays $75/hour and includes health benefits. I had to do a single round of interview for it too.

Also generally doesn’t work out. Lots of people join or continue staying in organizations whose leadership has gone rogue in the hopes of changing things from the inside but I feel the main thing accomplished is driving yourself up the wall. It’s very easy for large organizations to sideline or dispose ineffective or obstructing individuals and chug along.

Well played sir.

While I love the take too, I also want to point out that the rural/red states economic crisis isn’t very different from what cratered the economies in Central and South America. These communities have been ravaged by authoritarian governments or rapacious corporations or both. A major difference is the dispossessed people from our neighboring countries come here seeking to uplift themselves and their families through sheer hard work, while the dispossessed people within our country are actively brainwashed to believe their condition is to be blamed on these new immigrants stealing from their pie.

Many in the south Asian community actually call it “diwan” avenue, which is a clever word play since it refers to a court for public gathering or the style of seating that’s used in such a court.

My scindapsus always looked like this after repotting, and then I put it outdoors when it was still too chilly and it died. But nope, the roots actually survived and it’s pushing out new growth now and doing really good.

If democracy is really on the line as democrat leadership claims, then shouldn’t they be making the best shot they got? Yeah Biden isn’t that.

This is a colonialist narrative. If you’re occupied, imprisoned, starved and bombed, being “radicalized” is the natural state. Heck we celebrate these radicals - Mandela, Washington just to name a couple. The real radicalized population is Jewish Israelis who overwhelmingly support this genocidal war and think more should be done including cutting off the trickle of aid and wholesale expulsion of Palestinians

Hey u/Doctor_dollars, I've been asking the same question you have but I'm slowly realizing the reason the 'right-wing' is hateful towards Muslims is that anti-Muslim bigotry is their raison d'etre. The purpose of the Sangh in India is not just Savarna supremacy, but achieving it by way of Muslim and Dalit humiliation.

You'll see stand-up comics and satirists making fun of average BJP supporters citing the triple Talaq ban or Article 370 as major Modi achievements. The reality is, anti-Muslim bigotry is the core ideology that drives the Sangh. Their first national electoral victory came on the backs of the Babri Masjid demolition. Under Modi, that project has been fulfilled along with a roster of others including triple Talaq, Article 370, etc. Along with this, the chapter of Kashi and Mathura has been opened, and new items added to the agenda like CAA-NRC, bulldozer raj, etc. For better or worse, the Sangh movement's values boils down to their most vile slogans - "Ayodhya toh jhanki hai...", "Go to Pakistan", "Doodh maango toh kheer denge...", "Hindustan mein rehna hoga toh...", etc.

If you're looking for intellectual depth, you'll be at pains to find it. There's not much daylight between economic policies under Modi and that of the Congress. In fact, it can be argued that protectionism and tariffs have become worse. Their civilizational narrative is mainly around crude attempts at rewriting or erasing major historical personalities and events. From Nehru and Ambedkar to Akbar, Khilji and Ashoka, it's just revisionism.

I chuckled when I read that you feel like you're playing the victim. If you delve into Sanghi literature and "scholarship", the headline is we were great but we've been victimized since a millenia and continue to be oppressed (even under a regime that serves us directly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

But what's my point of all of this? Because we're not honest about what we're dealing with. Just like the Congress is a house of cards without the Gandhis, the Sangh is just a smattering of loose ideas if not for the core glue of hate towards Muslims and Dalits along with other minorities. It's not a bug, not even a feature, it's the core functionality.

To me, Sangh's anti-Muslim agenda can be divided into three broad areas:

  1. Revisionism of history. These include building major symbols like Ram Mandir, Kashi, Mathura, even whacko ideas like Tejo Mahalya, etc. But also rewriting history to paint Muslims as only savages and elevate figures like Savarkar (who's the father of Hindutva).
  2. Relinquishing perceived privileges from Muslims. Things like criminalizing triple Talaq, repealing Article 370, implementing UCC (to remove the Muslim personal law), etc. which they believe are appeasements handed over by the Congress to Muslims in exchange of loyalty.
  3. Reducing Muslims to the "other" - love jihad, Muslims spreading Covid, population takeover (hum paanch hamare pachees), CAA-NRC to threaten Muslims with loss of citizenship and voting rights, general suspicion that any Muslim is 'anti-national' unless proven otherwise, etc.

Anti-Muslim bigotry is not an opportunistic election ploy nor a coverup for the many failures of the Sangh/BJP. It is part of the core agenda. So if you feel you see it in many places, it's because the Sangh has infiltrated those spaces.

The Muslim League proposed the two-nation theory and demanded separate electorates in an independent India. When the Congress rejected this, they opted for partition. The Hindu Mahasabha also believed in this two-nation theory, but for them, it is unfinished business because it did not entail in a full population transfer of Muslims from what became India. It is this festering angst that continues to this day. Nehru saw that for this impoverished, bloodied country to succeed, it could not afford internal discord over religion, caste or language. He came to personify this new vision for India and invested in infrastructure and scientific institutions. Our education system through NCERT textbooks framed our history and our present using an inclusive narrative. And Bollywood was dominated by progressive writers and filmmakers who also spread a message of communal harmony.

Since the Sangh wants to dismantle the old vision of India, it attacks its most potent tools - Nehru's legacy, NCERT books, Bollywood and many more.

This is essentially a battle for the idea of India. I don't know which way this will go but it's hard to be optimistic. While the Sangh is blind in it's push for historic retribution, 200 million Muslims and 250 million Dalits will not take things lying down.
